When a APV indicates "shorted"... it's telling you that your build is below it's minimum allowable resistance... in this case, below the device advertized minimum of 0.3Ω.

Your build specs, per Steam Engine (see hyperlink siglines below), would indicate a 0.4Ω~0.5Ω net resistance, so the build, if it's accurate, is not your issue.

In general terms... to have a "shorted" atomizer display, you need either a dead short to ground, with a resistance of, in this instance, less than 0.3Ω. If you have a digital multimeter (DMM) or a ohm meter build box, you can measure the resistance of your atomizer build, interdependently from your APV.

To test the atomizer without benefit of a ohm meter, attach it to a non-regulated PV, like an 18650 mech mod, with a freshly charged battery. A high level of attention and caution is advised... in that if the mod immediately starts to get warm... the atty has a dead short, or your mech mod has a very high voltage drop/continuity issue... cease firing or carefully remove the atomizer from the mod - NOW!

It's possible that you have a shorted or otherwise faulty APV chipset, or a short in the 510 threaded connection... but to determine that, you'll need another, preferably 510 threaded, atomizer of a known resistance to test the APV.

yeah, i had a problem with vv/vw devices saying 'shorted' when i knew i built the coils right, turns out its just like state o flux said, its just telling you your mod cant power it because its too low resistance most of the time.

you can try running tighter wraps as well, your wraps look real spaced. resistance sort of changes to higher ohms when you squeeze em together. Your wires also seem to hang over the outer sides of the deck also, which could be an issue of the wires touching the topcap wwhen you put it on, put em close to the centerposts or do smaller coils

So I bought my first RDA today, and tried my first build using 26 gauge kanthal. Dual coil 6 wraps. Its hooked up to a Cloupor DNA 30, and it keeps shorting out. I wrapped the coils around a 1/8th inch drill bit. Can anyone help me figure out what the problem is?

Heres some pictures of the build.

1: maybe i'm just seeing shadows from the lighting but it kinda looks like you left excess wire lying all over the place?

2: You should take one coil out to see what happens.

The KISS method: Keep It Simple Stupid
Get one coil working before you add the other one.

As some others said it looks like the wire can be "cleaned up" a bit. The coils so look extremely far out on the deck, to where they would touch the top cap when placed on. I would take the build out. Put in a simple single coil that you worked out on steam engine calc. You can pull it far out on the deck, but keep it contained within the deck.

Also, make sure you are tightening the post screws snug. To where the the coils don't move if you tug on the excess wire when secured before you clip it. Too tight and you may cut the wire, make sure the screws themselves don't have many sharp cutting edges on the bottom.
