USB standard is 5v. You might get a tiny bit more or less, but it's going to be very close (at a guess, less than 0.1v variance) to 5v.

From a post on NUVapor:

Do note that if you're using this PT which operates at 5v, you wont likely get the full 5v using it through your USB port on your computer. Most USB ports only offer 0.5 amps to a "dumb" USB device, such as the PT. Not only that, using any PT in your USB port has an inherent risk of actually shorting your motherboard or at the very least, your USB ports. Not worth risking your expensive computer for a pass-through unless you've got money to throw around...

With that said, in order to get a full 5v and not risk shorting your motherboard on your PC, do yourself a favor and pick up a handful of these 2000mAh, 5v AC-USB adapters. $3.95 shipped each. Can't beat the price. I bought 3 of them, one in each room I vape in!

I have the same problem. Not all USB power supplies are created equal.

Apparently most of the AC to USB power adapters in my home have some sort of short protection and they dim also.

You are really just shorting the pos and neg on the USB, it is really a straight-through power short to heat the coil. Most adapters stop the power when shorted. I have tried multiple 5v 1000ma adapters I have for various devices, and the iPod/iPhone USB small BOX type seems to work the best. (I don't do iTunes, I just have a few adapters I use and have collected.)

Volts divided by ohms equals amps - if you have a 5v power supply and you're vaping on a 2 ohm 510 atomizer, it's going to draw 2.5 amps. Most other atomizers run about 3 ohms, so they're pulling about 1.6 amps. That will definitely have an effect on the ac wall wart, and that's why it's recommended to have at LEAST 1 amp (1000 mAh) current supplied by the wall wart.

What kind of PT are you using? Is it a China made one?
It is US made lol ( my homemade 5V PT).
