Need help with mixing math, please

I am not having any luck trying to figure out how to mix two strengths to get a third. But then again I've not had to calculate much beyond ohm's law, and my checkbook in over 30 years now.

For example: I have 16 mg/ml and 36 mg/ml, so how much of each do I need to make 24 mg/ml?
That's x16 + y36 = 24, right?
If I let x=1, I end up with y= -0.538. Negative fractions? So maybe that's not right.

Help? What's the right way to do this? Show your work please ;)

3 parts 16mg + 2 parts 36mg = 24mg
example - 3ml 16mg + 2ml 36mg = 5ml 24mg

For a minute I thought this was hyperdimensional physics class!
It's a bit simpler than that, mix one to one and you'll get 26mg/ml.
For those with a calculus bent, the formula works out this way... (1x+1y)/2=Z.

Better than:

V1 = volume 1 ; units = ml
V2 = volume 2; units = ml
C1= concentration 1; units = mg/ml
C2 = concentration 2; units = mg/ml
Cf= final concentration; units = mg/ml

Cf = ((V1xC1) +( V2xC2)) / (V1 + V2)

V1=3ml
V2=2ml
C1=16 mg/ml
C2=36mg/ml


Cf = ((3ml x 16mg/ml) + (2ml x 36mg/ml)) / (3ml + 2ml)

Cf = 24 mg/ml

right?

V2 = 3 ((( 16/24 ) -1) / ( 1 - ( 36/24)))

V2 = 3 ( -0.3333 / -0.5) = 2 ml
