The diameter and length you need is dependent on what you are using it for and how much voltage you are throwing at it.
Most people seem to go with 36 or 38 awg. I can see instances where 40 awg or even 32 or 34 awg could be used. Honestly any gauge could be used .. it all depends. I believe there is a calculation for all this. I do not know it, I just tinker.
