I am loving the vaping experience and would like to start exploring some more advanced vaping especially now that I have some really great juices and want the most flavor. I am currently using an Innokin MVP2 with a clearomizer, I have a few protank minis, an iclear30. a Tumbler, and a Kanger Aerotank. I like clearos but mostly for the convenience of filling a tank. I have some general questions so here goes...

1. I love my MVP2, how much better/or in what way different ( besides having a separate battery) are other regulated mods like the SID or Vamo, or LavaTube..Etc. Why do I want these if I have to worry about buying and charging a separate battery?

2. Is the only reason for using Mech mods the ability to do sub-ohm vaping?

3. If I wanted to start playing with RBA's could I use my MVP2, or do I need a different kind of Mod? If not, what Mod is a good one for beginners?

4. I have watched many videos and understand coil building in principle. What is a good RBA for beginners? I have seen/read a lot about the Kayfun/Kayfun Lite, would I be better off with a cheapo RBA for practice?

I know I want to go further, but I'm not in any hurry and am trying to get as much information before making an investment of time and money.

Hi there Catmomma,

Firstly let me welcome you to ECF. Your asking alot but I will do my best to answer your post.

1.if your happy with your MVP2 then stick with it. The Vamo has all the same features, but you will have to get the additional batteries as you say. My MVP2 does fire down to .8 ohms but I know others that wont fire below 1.2ohms. So it can technically do a sub ohm coil, but I prefer to stick safe with it atbaround 1.2-1.4 ohms.

2.I use my mechs for above sub ohms and normal coils. If ive got a setup say with my KFL+ or my fogger and it works for me in 18350 mode on my nemmy then thats fine. If you want to use a mech for a subohm then it depends on the discharge amperage of your battery rather than the mech itself. Getting a good quality battery like a Sony US18650VCT3 which have a 30A discharge and will suit most sub ohms but the lower the ohm the less time youll get offma fully charged battery.

3/4 (think you missed a number there). MVP2 is fine for rebuilables. As mentioned before stick to a good ohm size. I usually build a 1.4 and crank the watts to
9.5 -11 watts.

5.My first rebuilable was an RSST as it has an insulated wick hole so you dont need to worry about shorts when using mesh. I dont use mesh anymore but thats what I started with. (Look at a microcoil with cotton for the RSST)

Hope this answers some of your questions feel free to ask further questions if you want any additional info

Happy Vaping

what asht says above with one exception

#5 - genesis style tanks (RSST, aga-t are both beginner level genesis style rba's) are in my opinion a pain to build and keep working. I started rebuilding my protank coils - got an AGA-T - tried mesh, tried cable, gave up and now use it as an autodripper with cotton wick, got several inexpensive rebuildable drippers (for tasting flavors - I also diy) and recently got 2 Kayfun lite+ tobeco clones (no logo) off of ebay for about $40 each and love those - easy to build, adjustable airflow, easy to build (yes, worth mentioning twice) great flavor and vapor production - easy to swap out cotton wick and dry burn (without new cotton installed of course)

I also get my kanthal off ebay (Temco A1 32 gauge 100 ft will last you for almost ever for under $6 (the lower gauges have seem to have gotten very expensive recently - high demand from vapors? probably seeing as how everyone seems to want 30, 28, and 26 gauge to build subohm coils with

I use a 2.1 ohm coil and have great success with it flavor and vapor wise

Good info, thanks! The thing that makes me not want to deal with a Genesis style is that almost every video I've seen mentions having to drill the airhole bigger. I'm also not loving the idea of oxidizing ss mesh and trying to do the wraps vertically on the mesh. Microcoils with a cotton wick look so much easier to do. The Kayfun lite clone I saw had adjustable airflow. The only bad thing I've heard about the Kayfun is leaking out of the fill hole. Looks like if I do this I would get the Kayfun.

    1. When the battery goes south in your MVP you will get to toss your MVP in the tash. I will just put a new batery in my Provari. But, your MVP is better than a SID, VAMO, or Lava Tube. If you want to improve on the MVP, make sure that what you get is an impovement.

2/3. I started looking at mechanicals when looking for a backup PV. I wanted something that would still work even if Hell froze over.
Sub ohm vaping was simply one step in the learning curve of what can be done with coils. Micro coils, etc have pretty much made sub ohm coils a thing of the past, and they will work on your MVP the same as they do on a mechanical.

    4. Spending $90-130 for a KayFun before you even know if you like messing with RBA's is almost as silly as spending more for an atty than you did for your PV. There are plenty of RBA's in the $10-30 range to try and learn with.

I use RDA's insted of RBA's because my "perfect vape" has always been with dripping rather than with tank systems, and yes, that is just a personal preference. My RDA's (A7) cost about $16, and right now mine has a 2.4ohm micro coil in it and is being used on a mechanical PV.

Chances are high that you'll end up getting a Kayfun variant at some point - can't say enough good things about them. I'd say skip the RSST and go straight to the KF family (the tobeco clone mentioned above is a good one, many like the ehpro version, too).

If you like microcoils with cotton wick (my choice, too), the KF's are just as easy to build as the RSST, and less hassle than a 'traditional' genny build with mesh.

You mention some leaking with the KF's... most gennies leak a fair amount more (finicky about having to be stood straight upright).

Thank you for you comments. Yeah, the MVP2 has a finite lifespan. And eventually I will most likely get another type of Mod just for variety's sake if nothing else. What would you say is an upgrade, a Provari, maybe? It's hard to know what is and isn't a better device since so many people seem really die-hard about their faves. I don't think I would be interested in Mech Mods just yet, and as you say, sub ohm vaping seems to be a moot point with microcoils. I've also read that airflow control on clearos are a game changer. I'm looking at the Aspire Nautilus for a new clearo, but it's kind of pricey. My Kanger Aerotank is nice, I can get huge vapor from it but I don't sense a difference in flavor. As far as paying 100 bucks for a Kayfun, I wouldn't. I would probably get a clone and if I like it I would probably got for the Russian 91% if I were gonna spend a lot of money. Again thanks, all this is helpful.
