I've been a Kanger gal for about 5 years and I've never had issues....until now. Single coil at first then dual coil when those first came out.

Now it seems that all of a sudden, I am having issues which I can only attribute the switching from a 50/50 mix to a 70 VG mix. But it is odd....I've gone throug several bottles of the 70%VG over the past few months with no problem and all of a sudden, I'm burining wick with dry hits and having a hell of a time getting any vapor or flavor (I vape Naked 100 juice so they typically have a lot of flavor)

I've spent hours and hours reading up as to why and it always comes back to the thicker liquids being slower to saturate wicks, leading to more dry burns and the taste of sadness instead of my yummy melon liquid.

I should mention this, I always replace the silica wick with cotton for better flavor and have been doing this for years with great success. So much that I have to hunt down the original style coils and I never buy the upgraded kanger dual coils since you A: can't rewick them and B: the upgraded coils only go to 1.8 ohms and I prefer 2.0 ohm coils otherwise I just can't taste anything.

On another note, the last batch of coils I got were always shorting out prior to even using them....even before I switch out the silica for cotton, i test quickly to make sure it's a good coil.

So aside from any other solutions you all might have, I am starting to search for a new set up. Now every time I look for answers, it's always about sub ohm vaping and I've tried it HOWEVER, I don't like how hot the tip gets nor do I like a straight to lung hit...it's just too much.

Does there exist another tank (NOT a sub ohm) whose coils do well with thicker liquids? I've tried an Aspire nautilus which did not make me super happy since they are so tight to uscrew to fill and my premature arthritis does not like me very much for it.

I don't want to build my own coils - I'm cool to rewick but that's as far as I am willing to go - in fact, I'd like to be able to replace my wicks when the coils get gunked up....it saves quite a lot of money which is key. I also want to continue to use my VV batteries....not a mod with removable batteries but just stick with the batteries I can recharge like my e-Go VV 1100mah batteries. It's so frustrating and at this point, my kanger protank 3 is bringing me no joy whatsoever.

Many thanks for reading this far.

The Kanger Subtank Mini might work. It comes with a 1.2 Ohm coil and a 0.5. You can use the 1.2, tighten the airflow, swap the driptip for a delrin plastic one and have a nice lower wattage MTL vape. It's not a Protank MTL, though (I still have and use Protank II's).

Another option is the Joyetech Tron S or T. I gave up on mine because no matter how much I opened the airflow, I couldn't get a good DL hit without torching the coil. However, tightened airflow does produce smooth MTL vapor and no hint of dry hit or burnt cotton that way.

What Kanger should have done with the PT3 was expand the capacity of the PT2 and add adjustable airflow. The PT2 is still my favorite MTL tank but I would like an airier version that holds more juice. The Tron is about as close as I've found.

There aren't many choices...

You might try thinning your juice with a little distilled water. I'd start with about 1 drop of water per 1 or 2 milliliters of juice. Ever considered getting an Aerotank base to replace the Protank base? - they give you a whole new level of control. I still have a Protank II, which was a gift only a few months after they went on the market. With an Aerotank base it still works fine. You can buy authentic kanger cotton coils for about six bits, so its not worth my time to rebuild them. That the replacement coils are so cheap is the reason I still stick with Aerotank clones, even though there are devices out there that give a slightly better flavor.

You might try the Nicholas Vaporfly tank, it's a nice airy little MTL tank that does produce a fair amount of vapor with the 0.6 coil (it has a 1.8 coil as well) but with the right airflow and settings, it's pretty airy. My only thought is that it might be getting tougher to get the coils. It's a little known tank, but I run max VG in there without wicking issues at all, and it really is airier than say, an N2. I will say I have to run max VG in all my tanks (sensitive to PG) and how I manage the dry hit issue is to keep inhaling a few seconds after I release the fire button. It seems that solves my wicking problems as I am consistently drawing up liquid into the tank. I haven't had a dry hit yet, and I'm assuming it's that, because everyone seems to say high VG can be hard in MTL tanks, but I've never had issues. I gunk quicker, less coil life, but that's about it....

I do occasionally thin my VG mixes with a few drops of distilled water into my tank, but not always. Mostly if I'm going out and want my vape to be a bit more stealthy.

If you don't mind rewicking your coils, I suggest you try the eGo One tank (V1 or V2, whatever you can find for around 10 bucks) with CLR coils. It is currently my favorite tank for easy MTL vaping. Just make sure you throw away the CL coil that comes with some tanks (not all)--it's garbage. Get an eGo One tank and a box of CLR 1Ω coils. Those coils can be used straight from the box, they have cotton wicks, but some tend to be wicked a bit too tight for my (and most other users') taste. Then rewick them to your preferred density. They are ridiculously easy to rewick (and rebuild). When the coil gets gunky, it can be gently dry burned (remove the cotton wick first) many, many times--they are really well made and tough as nails. Dry burn, rinse off the ash, rewick.

The tanks I own don't leak, airflow is adjustable, refilling is a breeze. CLR coils also work in many other tanks, like Tron, but I prefer eGo One tanks myself.

If you want more information, here's a very long and chatty (

eGo ONE tank series – CLR coil

Good luck!
