New and in need of some direction/feedback

I am looking to quit smoking and I have seen and heard people talk about the e-cigarette. I started doing some research and it seems there are a lot of different "set-ups" or manufacturers that make these things. What is a good brand to start out with and what kind of money should I be looking to spend to get going?? Would a starter kit be a smart investment, or better to roll with something else???

Thanks for the help!

Welcome!
1)First, lets establish a budget, how much would YOU LIKE to spend? We can get you started around $70, or we can get you started around $1000! Lots of room in between!
2)How much and what do you smoke?
3)Do you want to stick to something like a traditional cigarette (it's easier for some to stick with something familiar) or are you willing to get something "different" for a longer usable life?
4)What do you do? It matters, I'm an idiot and do a lot of crazy things, so I like durability. An office worker wants something sleek and takes care of their gear.
5)Are you around an outlet most of the day? (A passthrough can be plugged in to a wall outlet and eliminate a lot of batteries.)
This should get us started at least!

Definitely not $1,000!! HAHAHA I think $100-$200 would be reasonable if it helps me kick the habit. I figure the amount I save should make up for it.

2)How much and what do you smoke?

1-2 packs a day of Marbloro Lights, but new job is making me cut back.

3)Do you want to stick to something like a traditional cigarette (it's easier for some to stick with something familiar) or are you willing to get something "different" for a longer usable life?

I am open...not sure about what flavors might be good, or if there is anything similar to marlboro lights?? I would be down to try something else though. Any good flavors I should check out? Also what is the PV/VG deal?

4)What do you do? It matters, I'm an idiot and do a lot of crazy things, so I like durability. An office worker wants something sleek and takes care of their gear.

I am an Athletic Trainer, the guy you see running onto the field during a football game when someone goes down with an injury.

5)Are you around an outlet most of the day? (A passthrough can be plugged in to a wall outlet and eliminate a lot of batteries.)

Most of the day I am by an outlet, but I do spend 4 hours outside for practices and games.

This should get us started at least!

I hope my responses answer the questions you asked. If not, I can provide more info.

Smokeless Image battery size comparisons.jpg

The above picture is a comparison shot of a cigarette with a couple of mini-sized batteries and three "eGo" size batteries. All are from the Smokeless Image lineup.

These are considered semi-disposable, because these rechargable batteries have an expected life of 250 charges. After that, the entire device must be replaced with a new battery. These are what most new users start out with because their smaller form factor is closer to cigarettes and are cheaper to buy initially. The mini-ecigs have a battery use of 3-4 hr and the larger cigar-sized batteries have a battery use of 6-10 hours or more. Because of their slim form factor, they are limited to juice carriers that are smaller in capacity.

Some of the eGo batteries offer variable voltage. The user can adjust the voltage to the heating coils to customize the vapor, flavor, and throat hit.

blue-chrome-ext.jpg

The above is an advanced personal vaporizer or APV, or mod, a Provari made by Provape. This is a heavily constructed metal tube meant to hold smaller replacable, rechargable batteries much like a flashlight does. These devices are more durable and will last years in comparison to the less durable devices described above. They are significantly larger in size and weight. They are more expensive initially, but consider they will last longer. The batteries that these use are cheaper (< $10), have a lifetime of 1 year, and can have a working duration of 8 hours to all day or more. Being larger devices, they are better able to carry larger capacity juice carriers of 3-8 ml of liquid that can last 1-3 days.

Some of the APVs offer variable voltage. This allows the user to increase or decrease the voltage of the heating coils to change the vapor and flavor of juice to their personal taste.

I'm a fan of Vapor 4 Life, google it for a link, great CS and a lot of options. I like Wow Boy, it's a tobacco flavor that ends with a hint of chocolate sweetness. It helps soften the blow going from a cig to vapor. BUT most of their gear isn't compatible with most other vendors. You can buy adapters etc, but it's a hassle as you grow!
The EGO batteries are a bit bigger than the stick cig type batts, but run a lot longer and seem to be a bit more durable than them. I really like the form factor of them, they are reasonably prices, try to get an 1100mah battery IMO, for the longer life. They make variable voltage EGO's if you want to experiment with voltages to see what you like better. I'm getting on a VV kick right now myself, I LIKE IT!!
I saw the other day someone link to an EGO set for around $80, case, two batteries and other goodies, just needed some juice!
Others will have more suggestions, but right now look around at the different vendors, below on the main page and you can go directly to their page, and get an idea of what you think will or wont work for you, then we can help narrow it down from there!

Good post!
BUT, you CAN put the larger delivery devices on the smaller batteries, a lot of people seem to like that setup. The larger delivery devices are what we refer to on here as "tanks". They hold anywhere from 2ml to 12ml of juice for a LOT of vaping.

For e-liquids or e-juices, recommendations are hard to give for specific flavors, or even categories of flavors, because everyone's tastes are extremely subjective. What one person likes, another may find distasteful. Just realize that no e-juice will be able to match what a cigarette tastes like; none can replicate burning tobacco and paper. Focus on finding a substitute flavor, be it tobacco, menthol, fruit, candy, desert, coffee, etc. The variety is endless. Finding one or two good juices initially is as important as the first gear that you purchase to be successful in vaping.

The following are two juice vendors that I order from frequently that offer samplers of their flavors. This is the best, most economical way to find flavors that you will enjoy and not waste money on larger bottles that you may not care for. Once you find flavors you like, order in a larger size bottle.

Vaperite | E Liquid Flavors and Organic E Cigarette Liquid

Organically Flavored E-liquid | Virgin Vapor | Electronic Cigarette Organic e-Liquid | Electronic Cigarettes

There are a variety of juice carriers/heating attachments that can fit on your batteries. The following link is a description with pictures of the more common choices.

I am in Orange County, did some quick online search of local stores and I have identified one or two near me. I am going to them out tomorrow and see what they have. I will probably go with an EGO starter and a larger ego battery to see how it goes. Do the VV tanks fit into the Ego starter kits??

Not sure if i would need an adapter or if it is a plug and go???

Also, can someone explain the PG/VG thing and what I should be getting?? I know everyone is different, but I am super lost when it comes to PV/VG percentages, and you guys gave great feedback on my initial set-up.

THANKS AGAIN! I will try to keep up with this and let you know how I do with my quest to quit smoking cigarettes!

This is my local shop. I think they're open at 11am...not so sure, but they do close at 10pm or later depending on customers. They have a good variety of toys and juices. Their prices are highly competitive to online and the knowledge and service you gain is priceless.

510 threaded accessories will fit any battery that has a 510 thread. 510 threading is the most popular and have alot more extra peripherals out there compared to anything else.

PG and VG are the main ingredients for your liquid. Some are allergic to PG so they go 100% VG; some are to VG so they go with 100% PG. Most are not and go with a mix of PG/VG. PG enhances the throat hit while VG produces more vapor. PG is less viscous compared to VG. From personal testing, nicotine is key to throat hit.

For someone that smokes a pack or so of lights a day...I would recommend 50/50 PG/VG with 12mg nicotine.

Flavor is subjective. The store I frequent let's you try juices until you find what you want.

Hi Cali,
The tanks aren't VV - VV means variable voltage. A Vision mini vivi nova will fit an Ego nicely. You would be better getting a genuine Vision one. I would suggest you buy some cartomizers as well. Those are very easy to use and sometimes people have a bit if a learning curve with tanks. Cartomizers can be good to have if you are finding the tank a bit tricky at first.

On PG/VG - PG enhances flavor and nicotine delivery - so it enhances the throat hit. VG produces most of the vapor and is thicker than PG. Standard PG/VG combinations would be 80/20, or 70/30 - those would be good starters. I've tended to vape those myself mostly. Some folk like 50/50.

I agree that since you have a couple of shops close by that you should check one out and see what's what. That made a world of difference for me here in Los Angeles. Plus you can try different juices as well. Also, I don't know about the stores in the OC but I know the one up here, The Vapor Spot, while a bit more expensive than on line shopping gave me an additional 1 year warranty on my battery. Tomorrow is 6 days since my last tobacco cigarette. Good luck to you!!!

Glad to hear you're wanting to quit! Respect! Some great suggestions being given in this thread. Be sure and read about how to actually vape. It is *not* like smoking. The harder you hit a cig, the faster you get nic. Not so with a vape. You hit a vape hard, and the coil will not reach it's operating temp to give you the nic you need. The first few days were frustrating for me because I was making this mistake.
For cheap starters I went with the eGo 510 (900mah) passthrough style unit (let's me plug into my usb and vape while recharging on my computer) and a few "vivi nova stardust" cartos. These cartos can be taken apart and cleaned (and even rebuilt if you ever decide you want to save some cash) and the heads will fit on the vivi nova tank as well. I bought this at "gotvapes.com" (not affiliated, just a customer). I couldn't tell you about which juices to get as I mixed my own from the start. I'm one of those who doesn't handle PG very well. Oh, VG will tend to mute the taste some, and also adds a slightly sweeter taste overall.

I'm glad you have a decent local shop, this will make a lot of difference IMO! It's nice to be able to go in and be able to see and feel the devices before you buy them! You can see how they fit in your hands and pockets!
I think the EGO's are a very nice form factor, very long life in a moderate size, I just don't like that they are disposable, and I don't mind carrying something larger to just be able to swap out a battery and go. But that's my opinion and it's worth just that much! I also don't like the EGO mega cart's they try to sell, you, I've had a lot of problems with them, they don't work, have to fiddle with the connector's, hard draw, no draw they don't work with this battery, but love this one and so on. It's frustrating putting that much juice in one just to have it not work. Again, just my opinion and worth that much! I'm a tank fan!
But go to the brick and mortar, talk to them, try some things, handle some things and hopefully you like them! I'm all for supporting the local guy! Good luck!

Hardest part is done: decide to vape.....

Now for devices, look at sugested options... all are ok to start....

Next hardest part: don't look back to analogs.... it's easy with all this friends...

Great advice! However I think you might want to try a higher Nic lvl. I was smoking 7-8 Cigs a day and now vape 5-6 mils of 18mg nic a day... I can vape inside so I am using it all the time LOL
