So this is more for my mother-in-law. She is a heavy smoker and due to health problems, she would really like to try to quit or at least have a less-chemically invasive way to smoke. She has tried my vapor and she seems to cough really bad. Not like I did when I first started, but she says it feels like her lungs are swimming. She does seem to catch bronchitis and pneumonia extremely easily and she thinks that her lungs just cant handle the water vapor for this reason. I talked to our local vape shop about it and he stated that she may need a pure PG or VG mix. Now forgive me as I am new and I don't know what the hell he was talking about, but I was curious if anyone could explain the different to me on here or if this has happened to someone on here and what you did to get past it. I understand that we should consult her doctor which we will be doing, but again just curious if it happened to anyone on here. Thanks in advance.;)

When I started, I noticed I coughed quite a bit. It could be the inhale technique being used. I was drawing straight into the lungs with higher PG levels, which was making me cough. Now, I draw into the mouth (like filling my mouth with vapor) and then inhale. I also use higher VG levels all the way to PG free juices. Mt Baker Vapor also sells juices in a 70 VG / 30 distilled water mix. I have found this to vape well and be easier on my throat. Keep experimenting, and I'm sure you'll find your way.

Suggest trying both, "see" if either works for her and doesn't cause as much coughing

To do this cheaply..
E-Liquid Made in USA - E-Liquid 6 ml - E-Liq.com Shop
Choose option 1 on *Select Liquid Base (Vegetable Glycerin-VG Base) then choose the nicotine level then choose a flavor then quantity, add to cart.
Repeat the selection, only changing option 1 to 2 (Propylene Glycol -PG Base) and add to cart.

This may not be Super great juice, but it's good enough for checking reactions and likes.

When I first tried e-cigs, I thought I was going to cough up a lung. Funny now, but not so much then.
Some folks take to vaping like a fish to water, others, like me, have to "learn to vape". Which means finding the right nicotine level and PG/VG ratio. Not to mention, you don't hit an e-cig like a real cigarette!

I'm sure others will chime in here.

I can't claim to have or have had the same problems as your mother-in-law, but one thing I've noticed that if I vape too high a level of VG my chest feels heavy. I personally like 60/40 pg to vg. Much more VG than 50% and I get that heavy feeling (also it makes my vapor taste 'greasy'). That said some people are also sensitive to PG. I'm not one of those people, so I don't know if PG would behave with them the same way VG behaves with me.

Also when I first started vaping I coughed a lot. All most all of it was black tar filled sputum. That is smoking cessation related, and gradually lessens over time.

It could also be the nicotine content of the juice. I didn't have this problem when I first started vaping, but now if I vape over 15mg/mL I will start coughing. I can handle 15mg okay, but I mostly do 12mg now. I would imagine that if you're vaping juice at say 24mg or 18mg that may be too high for someone who smokes ultra-lights.

It would be very helpful to know what it was that you had her try. I just tried some Mt.Baker "Hawk Sauce" for the first time and the menthol in it made me cough a bit until I lightened up my hit. Something smooth like butter pecan goes down nice and easy. Take a look at what flavor and mix (pg/vg) you had her try and what the nicotine level is and get back to us.

When I started Vaping my chest would really hurt only when I used a DCT tank or dual coil tank with a juice that had a higher PG ratio. I switched to a bottom feeder tank and changed my juice ratio to 20% PG and 80% VG. I hope she is successful in quitting smoking...keep trying different juice ratios.

Hey Capt and everyone else, got more information. I had her try each flavor that I have had which are Turkish Wood (really light woodsy tobacco flavor), chocolate mint, pina colada, and cinnamon red hot. All the ejuices are 70% PG/ 30% VG mixtures with the nicotine level at 18mg. I had her try it out of my device which is the eGo-T with not real special mods that would affect the taste or pull and it was on the "light" setting. I'm not sure if this will help at all, but my mother-in-law and I have talked more and she has scheduled an appointment with her doctor to discuss it and she wants me to go with her to show her what it is and talk to her about it.
