No, the save and "save and exit" buttons were both inactive. The only button available to click was exit.

If I do a "save as" from the file menu, will that save everything- like ingredients and amounts- or just the recipes? I lost everything except the manufacturer list when I closed it.

I believe it saves everything - can anyone else confirm?

I was so in love with this program, but I just closed it and lost everything! All my ingredients, all my settings, just gone. The save button is greyed out on my screen. What is going on? Why can't I save? Or I should say- what am I not understanding?

I am confident that you didn't loose your recipes and ingredients. When you have a "juice" file open the save button is enabled. When you don't have a named juice file open ed (such as when you click the file->close) the buttons are gray. To get back to your original juice file click the File->Open button. You will then need to browse to the location of your juice file. The file will have a name that ends with .xml.

tidegirl,

I did the same thing a couple of times! I finally just entered one ingredient and then cliched File / Save As and then named the file recipes. Once I did that I could then add ingredients and recipes and save them using the 'Save' button. It seems you need to create the file before the buttons are active.

HotRod, overall a great program! Thanks for all the hard work

The file save as will save any recipes and ingredients that are currently available to you in the drop down lists and allow you to provide a name for the file and a location/directory to save the file in.

When you closed, using the file close, the recipe file you had opened will be closed and the program will provide you with an empty file for new recipes and ingredients.

To get back to your previous file use the file open.

Thanks, I will try this if I can't find the current file. Adding one thing at a time and checking that it is there this time LOL.

devilchasnme,
There is a way to manually adjust inventory. It is a bit of a pain, though, and I'd love to see an inventory management dialog.
NRrHGwp.png

Thanks. It's not so much a problem on the Manage Ingredients window because something on the screen changes (at your arrow) when I click the Add to Inventory button.

Hotrod, it's when I'm in the recipe window and click the Reduce Inventory button. Nothing happens. Nothing on the screen changes so did I click it? Did it reduce inventory? Should I click again?

If a yes/no box came up (or something else happened) I'd know I clicked.

I checked the default directory- documents/juice calculator- but it is empty. Would the file be somewhere else?
The file could be somewhere else. When you save your first file the program will launch the Windows file browser and position you in the default directory (documents/juicecalculator) but you have the option to navigate to another directory and save.

After you save the file, the calculator will remember the last file that you saved and always open that file when it is launched.

If you do a File->Close the opened juice file will be closed and you will be presented with an empty juice file allowing you to build new recipes/ingredients and until you do a File->Save As, the Save buttons will be greyed out.

The difficulty that I believe you may be in is that your juice file is saved in a directory somewhere but the you don't know the location of where it was saved. Here is a couple of things to try:

1. Did you have the "backup" options turned on (Tools->Backup Options)? If so, the file can be located in the "Backup location".

2. You can also look in your "My Documents" folder and see if the filename.xml is located there since that is a Windows default save location.

3. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8 (I don't remember if this was in earlier versions of Windows) and launch Windows explorer and go to "My Documents". In the upper right corner of the window you will see a "Search Documents" box. Type in "*.xml" and see if it locates your named juice file.

4. By chance, is your computer setup with multiple users and did you use another username to logon to Windows to build your juice file. If you did, the file might be stored in the other users "My Documents" location.

Currently I am not displaying in form of acknowledgement but I will add it and try to come up with some ways to control/manage the inventory values.
I have been out of commission for a couple of weeks due to a shoulder surgery but I am now back to the point where I can type again. I am going to begin addressing many of the recommended changes and post a new version soon.

Have there been any updates to this calculator? I have been using the one from the OP. I have not had any issues just curious. I prefer this to the other calculator...well done and thanks!
I would like to be able to set a low level warning for each ingredient so that when you mix a batch and you go under that level a dialog pops up telling you to reorder...would be cool!

Rod posted an update about 3 weeks ago, before he had some shoulder surgery, which has kept him out of commission. The links in the OP always point to the latest release, so if you downloaded and installed recently, you likely have the latest. If not, just visit the OP to get to the download links, download the latest version, and reinstall. It will update without losing any of your data files.

Hi HotRod,

First off, a huge round of Thanks for this awesome Calculator.

There's one little thing that's been bugging me and I wanted to share it with you.

Scenario: You're working on a recipe and you want to change an ingredient. You click the arrow to the right of the ingredient, and open up the drop-down list of ingredients. Then you move your mouse over to the drop down and focus on some ingredient.

The problem is that when you use your mouse wheel to try to scroll up or down the list of ingredients, what happens, at least to me, is that the ingredient % is changed instead. I would have "assumed" that I would be able to scroll up or down the list of ingredients till I got to the one I wanted, then click on it to change the ingredient.

The side effect of this behavior is that if you hadn't saved recently, and if you don't remember the % you had the ingredient at before, you have to Exit and lose your previous changes.

Anyways, it's no biggie.

Thanks again for this wonderful program
I have resolved this issue and the change will be in the next version that I post.

Hotrod - Have you thought about adding a Manage Inventory popup like you have for Manage Ingredients?

or is there a way to recover from mistakenly clicking the Add to Inventory or Reduce Inventory buttons?

Maybe a "Yes or No" popup - Do you want to Add to/Reduce Inventory? something like that.

Thanks.
I relabeled the button from "Reduce Inventory" to "Reduce/Increase Inventory" and a form will be displayed asking if you want to reduce the inventory amounts for each ingredient or increase the inventory amounts for each ingredient in the recipe.
The update will be included in the next version that I make available.

I've been using this program since I started DIYing, and I am very impressed with the featureset. However, I've noticed that it's lacking a few things - or rather, a few things could use improvement.

I find myself frustrated with even my moderate (~40) ingredient library, since it is just a big list. If we can add our own folders to organize ingredients the way we want, I think inventory control will be much easier. It might be a good idea to have an "All Flavors" folder in there by default - so you can choose to look either categorically or alphabetically. Basically, I'd like ingredients and recipes to work more like bookmarks in a web browser.

Also, version control - right now I'm getting around the problem by creating one recipe per version, but I'd love a dropdown to select which version to load. The folder system would be a workaround, if you allow subfolders, but I think a separate GUI element for recipe version would be a better solution.

I am going to have to give some thought to this one (it won't be easy) but I do like the idea to be able to categorize ingredients.

I have also been trying to figure out how to implement a versioning for recipes. It is also on my list to do.

You can also click the "Help->Check for updates" menu item from the calculator and it will launch the website where you can download the latest version. The latest version is 4.0.0.3 however I will be posting version 4.0.0.4 very soon.

Thanks for the response. I hope you feel better soon - I'm sorry to hear about your shoulder! I hope you aren't in too much pain.

One way it might be able to be done is if you add an XML tag for FolderLevel and ParentFolder; an item with FolderLevel 0 is in the root (main) list and FolderLevel 2 is inside one folder which is inside another. Setting ParentFolder would generate the necessary folders as required, so you wouldn't have to store that data more than once. That way, when the calculator reads the library.xml, it'll populate the folder structure as needed: if an item has FolderLevel of Foo and ParentFolder of Bar, it'll create a folder called Bar in FolderLevel - 1.

I just made V4.0.0.4 available. The changes include:

  1. I was displaying some labels as "inches" when metrics was selected for display. Fixed.
  2. When launching the window to create/update paper definitions new paper definitions were not being selected when returning to the launching window. Fixed.
  3. When selecting the "File->Print Ingredients" button and clicking the Cancel button an exception was being thrown. Fixed.
  4. Added a new menu option "File->Open recent". This will show you the last 20 juice files that you opened or saved and allow you to select the file and open it. This option was added in case you forget the location that you saved your juice file to.
  5. When the mouse wheel was used to scroll thru the drop down list of ingredients, the flavor percentage for the ingredient was changed. Fixed.
  6. Changed the "Reduce Inventory" button on the main window to "Reduce/Increase Inventory". When clicked a window will be displayed asking if you want to reduce or increase the inventory amounts of each ingredient by the amounts called for in the recipe.

AARRRGGGGHHH!!!!

OK, a file search found this on my computer:

C:\Users\Denise\AppData\Roaming\JuiceCalculator\DefaultOptions.xml

With a modified date of yesterday. This must be it. But when I go to the program and open, I go to c:\users\denise and there is no app data folder listed. There is a lock icon showing on the Denise folder, does that mean it is not showing everything? And how do I make it show me what is hidden?
