New Canadian poll finds:
- 64% of smokers, 27% of ex-smokers, and 9% of never smokers “ever used” an e-cig,
- 76% of vapers who quit smoking said e-cigs were “very successful” for quitting,
- 63% of vapers who quit smoking vape nicotine-free vapor products,
- 68% of vapers who still smoke vape nicotine products (38% always, 30% sometimes),
- 96% of never smokers who use e-cigs vape nicotine-free vapor products,
- 29% of vapers always vape nicotine, 24% sometimes do, and 47% never vape nicotine,

There were many other interesting findings in the poll.

Since Health Canada claims that its illegal to sell nicotine containing e-cigs in the country, that may explain some (but not all) of the findings.

An excellent article about this poll in the Toronto Globe and Mail

The "nicotine is illegal" thing should not have skewed the results much. Pretty much the only place to get vape gear is either online or in a vaping B&M, and both of those sources sell nic juice readily. In fact, you'd have to ask specifically for zero nic.

There is also no "OMG - that's nicotine!" stigma on the street, so no social pressure to speak of regarding nic versus zero nic consumption.

I think nic is over rated in the reason for smoking. Habit is huge.

If it were mostly about the nic, patches and gum would work better.

This one poll alone shows vaping as being about 5x more effective than patches/gum when used as tobacco cessation.

Also interesting to see the ex-smoker non-vapers using zero nic mostly - more evidence that it's the habit, as you call it, they want, not the nic.

Some cessation-effectiveness studies match nic-e-cigs vs non-nic-e-cigs as a control. The Nic versions help twice as many people quit. But if the habit portion is such a big factor then I expect that the control groups had a lot more quitters than a 'nothing at all' control group would have.

Myself - I get a 'hunger' type fealing in my chest; and smoke - or my favored ecig vapors - make themselves fealt there and the hunger goes away. Maybe thats what some call throat-hit. But, I'm not so sure that my hand would have to hold anything up to my mouth, if my lungs fealt that vapor. After all I often held cigs in my mouth till the ash was half-a-cig long and the cig was glued to my lips.

We have a kind of two-tier system though, where nicotine-free "cig-a-like" e-cigs are widely available wherever tobacco is sold, but to get nicotine e-liquid or better devices, you need to go to a vape shop.
