New CDC study officially debunks ‘vaping and formaldehyde’ myth

“Area sampling results showed that background formaldehyde concentrations were similar to the personal sampling results. Low concentrations of formaldehyde exist in many indoor environments because of off gassing from furnishings, clothing, and other materials.”

Maybe I can get my ex-MIL to check that out. She has COPD and still smokes, I had her vaping but when all that came out about e liquid chemicals she quit. I did my best to explain it all and showed her how and what they were testing but she wouldn't have it, her doctor said vaping was worse than smoking, she was done.

A year later she had more trouble switched doctors because that one is now a quack but she still believes that vaping is worse. Funny thing is her new doctor says she needs to quit all together or use e cigs, even her lung doctor has told her the same thing but she won't have it.

It's bad she's 59 and can't walk around a store, has to use those chairs, can't walk 50 feet to her mail box without being winded. Yet, she keeps on smoking, says she won't use the pills because of side effects (she's never tried them though), the gum, lozenges and patches are too expensive. I keep at it though, tell her I've got an AIO she can have and liquid is cheaper now, she always used that junk gas station stuff, bleh.

I have a bad feeling she's gonna be one of those on a tank and still smoking before it's said and done. We need more solid info coming out and made easily known. Even if vaping isn't safe but safer than smoking, it's still a step in a better direction, which is how I look at it anyways.

I hope so, Papergoblin, that sounds utterly miserable. I'm sorry her doctors are giving her bad advice. I know several people (and I can ALMOST include myself although I never got the "dreaded diagnosis") whose doctor's were THRILLED they started vaping, and one of mine vapes so he is always on top of the latest research and it's really nice. I can ask a lot of health related questions and he gets it. I really hope your ex-MIL switches, that sounds like such a miserable existence, and I know folks dx with COPD who started vaping. Their symptoms have ALL improved, even those who started out with oxygen tanks.

Nice article, thanks DP. :) The more debunking the better, in my opinion :)

Thanks, Anna - and I agree (but I guess that's been pretty clear?).

If she wasn't smoking, I'd certainly not recommend she begin vaping, but since she is smoking, I'll only offer that personal experience tells me she might see a marked improvement if she moved from smoke to vapor. In my very biased opinion, it's the best option for someone looking to give up smoking - and by a wide margin too.

Yes - much damage was done with some misleading information. It's a shame too. Good luck, and I hope you're (she's) successful. It's an unpleasant condition - that's for sure.

This also popped up in the temp safety thread. This looked at indoor air conditions in a Vape shop and showed no excessive exposure to second hand vapor. It didn’t measure what an actual vaper inhales when vaping. Still good to show you won’t hurt other people around you. I believe the is also a rehash of the CA dept of health study as it identified the same issue of food in the nic fridge as not a good practice. Could be a different Vape shop and study but the parallels are too close for me to believe this was a separate study.

It may be but scientists like to debunk each other, lol. So they could have repeated the study/tests themselves to validate or disprove the info obtained. That's why I always look for the procedures or steps of reported studies. If it cannot be replicated, then it is basically useless data as it cannot be confirmed or denied technically.

I'm with Eskie, think it's the same shop study. Still good to spread a positive article. I am just glad my style of vaping puts me minimal risk regardless of future findings.
@DPLongo22 do you voluntarily snow wrestle? Or are you shoveling sidewalks? One may be fun, the other not so much.

.

Eh, neither shoveling nor snow wrestling sound like a ton of fun at the moment. It’s really nasty out with high wind to add to the misery.

@DPLongo22 hope your power is holding up ok.

Sincere sympathies. 12 degrees and sunny here. Since having the satellite shut down I never see national weather reports. Stay warm and safe everyone.

Thanks, Eskie - will pass on your hopes. He's fine, for now, and has power. (yaay) But you are right. It IS miserable. I am in tummy knots thinking about everyone suffering this brutal storm. :(

Boston and MA are really getting nailed. My best thoughts to those caught up there. Looks worse than around this area.

No, it doesn't. Your thread title doesn't jibe with the study. The CDC only sampled ambient air inside a vape shop and not air coming directly from an e-cig's mouthpiece during a vape. Numerous lab studies on vaping has shown that there is some aldehyde releases during vaping, even at "comfortable" temperatures (less than cigs, but still above control samples). The CDC study showed that there's little to no harm from it to bystanders (2nd hand vape). The person actually vaping is a different story.

DP's title is the title of the article.
