Wow, some people are still using the "gateway" argument even though it has been debunked by so many people, in so many field of studies. Once again, confusion brought on by the deliberate misunderstanding of causality and correlation...

Here's my gateway argument: drinking water leads to using hard drugs. You know, because all hard drug users have used water before using hard drugs...

CASAA's Ronald A. Ward Jr. Esq. an expert in criminology commented "This is the worst excuse for a gateway argument I have ever seen."

"This is a classic case of someone with a political agenda tacking their opinions onto technical research and trying trick the press into reporting it that way" said CASAA President Julie Woessner. "E-cigarettes as a smoking cessation method are one of the most important public health breakthroughs of this century. But sadly there are those who would prefer that people keep smoking rather than finding a satisfying very low-risk alternative."

"The authors of the new study seem unaware of the fact that ....... use peaked long after smoking rates had come down exactly the opposite of what they predict and that drug-seeking behavior in the real world is not at all similar to mouse neurobiology" observed Phillips. "Moreover even if their scientific conclusions are right and nicotine use slightly increases the effects of ....... their political conclusions would still not follow from that. Imagine that a study found that eating apples had this effect. You can be sure that the authors would not be demanding restrictions on apples. This is purely a political agenda one that is responsible for causing many people to unnecessarily die from smoking."

I am in real distress over this study, and not just because it's another ludicrous anti-ecig work.

I knew Eric and Denise Kandel back in the day and have had, until now, great respect for his work (not as familiar with hers, so I'll pass on her part in this). To see him debase his good name like this is just... well, it's sad. I'm embarrassed for him. I'm embarrassed for them both.

i read it today on the UK Telegraph website, which allowed no comments on it.

Spurious nonsense at best and you'd have to travel far to find someone that would believe passive smoking, REAL smoking and e-cig use all carried the same risk of anything at all.

On the same day there's a post in here announcing that the FDA will not publish results of a study it oversaw, that concluded that vaping rejuvenated smoker's lungs.

Vaping is a gateway for sure, but not the way this mangled "research" intimates.

This quote explains everything:

“We’ve worked very hard to reduce smoking in this country, and I think it’s been a fantastic success,” Denise said. With the introduction of e-cigs, “Now I think we’re on the verge of destroying all of the progress that we’ve [made].”

It's not about the health concerns at all. It's all about cultural reform.

Agreed. She's just another ANTZ willing to commit mass murder on an unprecedented scale for fear of damaging the purity of the tobacco control dogma.

Whenever I thought that it could not get lower...
Whenever I thought that so-called "scientists" could not debase themselves any more....
Whenever I thought that they were scraping the bottom of the gutter....

Well, then somebody opened their wallets wide... took out more dirty money... and it turned out that the lowest depths of depravity had not been reached yet.

No one using these kinds of arguments is doing "science". The truth is, actual scientists are the first to attempt to demolish their own hypotheses. That's the "scientific method", a crucial component of actual science, far too often disregarded as inconvenient...
