Hi all, usually i'm not much of a forum person but I thought why not. Anyways, have been vaping for a few years & have a half decent collection now; few mods (mechs & variables) & a fair few attys. Both drippers & tanks. I personally prefer the mouth to lung style of vaping. I normally stick to something like a Kanger Subtank (I ALWAYS build my own coils, in this around the 1ohm mark) or a Kayfun V4 (again, usually built by myself usually around the 1 - 1.25ohm mark). Both around the 12 watts mark which has worked great for me for ages now.

I tend to like fruity flavours. I'm loving the Element range, mostly Limon & Strawberry. Only problem with these is I find for me personally they gunk up my coils & cotton VERY quickly. They're also on the darker side when it comes to colour.

I've tried DIYing my own eliquid before with SOME success & have decided to try again recently. I bought all my stuff from everythingliquid.co.uk including the flavourings. They have a range called "MixMaster" I believe. Anyway, I've made up a few 10ml testers & my preferred measuring technique is with weight.

The problem i'm having, even after steeping for a week is that my testers all seem SO weak on the flavour side! For example, here's a recipie I've tried:

Banana & Vanilla Custard @ 6mg 60/ 40 PG VG
(For some reason I decided to mix up a 30ml bottle & I can't remember why!)

Nicotine (72mg strength PG based): 2.59g
PG: 12.33g
VG: 15.14g
Banana Flavouring: 1.5g
Vanilla Custard Flavouring: 1.5g
Ethyl - Maltol: 0.6g

After some steeping I tried it on a fresh atty & the taste was almost absent completely. I decided, maybe 12% flavouring wasn't enough & thought i'd try increasing it to 18% (am just experimenting), so I added:

Banana Flavouring: 0.6g
Vanilla Custard Flavouring: 0.6g
Ethyl - Maltol: 0.6

With these added, my flavouring percentage SHOULD be around the 18% mark. Now, the reason i'm mostly concerned is that I frequently read that it's rare for a flavour percentage to go over 20%... mine's at 18% already & it's just, plain. Almost like a flavourless eliquid, I can't see adding an extra 2% making THAT much of a difference. So, any advice?

How people start at 10% & taste ANYTHING is beyond me, perhaps the Mixmaster range is just not as concentrated or something as other people talk about?

Anyway, thanks for ready, & I hope to see you all on here!

Welcome to the ECF, @Proserpine. I've just started DIY myself, so I don't have much to offer in that area, but once you get in five posts (posts, not threads) you can post your question in the DIY sub-forum. There are plenty of knowledgeable folks there who I'm sure will be able to help.

Hi and welcome. I DIY, and my flavor percentages run from 10 to 26 percent, depending. Perhaps you should try a different brand of flavorings? Also try making up a test batch in the 25% range, see if that improves things. If it does, that will tell you you're either using weak flavors, or you like a lot of flavor in your juice. There is no hard and fast rule about flavor content. True, most commercial juices don't exceed 20%, but a big part of that is cost; flavors are the second most costly ingredient, after nicotine.

First of all, welcome. I am new to diy juice too. My first tests were really weak. A member said to check the maker's suggested %and found I had used too much. I cut it down with more base and the flavor increased. Example: one maker of banana says 10-15% while mine (Flavourart) said 4-5%. It sounds like you are more advanced than me so this should be an easy fix for you. Also, there will be lots of help here for you. Good luck.

As NoFumus said, there is no longer a 5 post requirement since we switched to the new forum software.

As people have been helping you out and pointing you to the DIY section all I have to say is.....

Aww thank you so much guys!

There's that warm fuzzy feeling trying to warm up my black heart now.

I might try a couple more tests later today, like mixing at a 25% rating like someone said. See if that does anything.

I just want to create one or two really nice ones to help save some money so I don't need to keep going to the vape shop. Then I feel I have more "time" to experiment so to speak.

As for manufacture guidelines on my flavourings, I haven't been able to find any!

Welcome and glad you joined.
Could you post the recipe(s) in this form?
Example:
Sub or non sub ohm. (sometimes, can make a diff.)
Steep time for mix.
PG/VG and nic mg. target.
(CA or INA,FA etc.) Vendor A flavor X%
Vendor B flavor Y%
Vendor C flavor Z%
This convention is pretty much understood by most DIY'rs. Vendor info lets us know taste of flavor and percent tells us strength used in your mix.
Just, hit "like" at bottom right hand corner of this post and I (or someone else) can read your answer and get back to you.

Okedoke, here goes:

Banana & Vanilla Custard
Non sub ohm
Steep time; roughly a week
60 PG 40 VG 6mg strength Nicotine
Mix Master from everythingliquid.co.uk Banana Flavour 7%
Mix Master from everythingliquid.co.uk Vanilla Custard 7%
Mix Master from everythingliquid.co.uk 10% Ethyl-Maltol 4%

Does this make more sense? I just gave it another vape & it's still rather weak. I feel like i'm doing something obviously wrong... I just can't see it!

Yes.
Possible problem and cause #1:
4% EM is too much and tends to mute flavors for me. Could start at .2% and I would not go beyond 1% max..
Possible problem and cause#2:
Most VC's use a 3-4 week natural steep.
Possible problem and cause #3:
This blender is half the cost of most of the cheapest flavors available in US. This might explain why the mix is so weak. Suggest using a well known blender such as TFA , CA , FA and re adjust percentages to a recommended blender(s) mix strengths. Your everythingliquid.co.uk percentages could be as good as it gets for this blender's product. To be fair, other folks could be happy with this blender's product at these strengths (lower or higher). Might email blender for recommended mix strengths regarding these 3 flavors.

Okedoke, some great replies here so I want to say thank you to all of you!

So, I've just ordered these flavourings:
Capella: French Vanilla V2, Lemon Meringue Pie V2, Vanilla Cupcake V2, Vanilla Custard V2, Bavarian Cream, Butter Cream, Coconut & Super Sweet

Perfumers Apprentice: Banana Cream, Vanillin 10%, Key Lime, Lemon Lime, Ripe Strawberry & Sweetner

Am going to play around with stuff, I realise I might be 'missing some' to make typical recipies but hey, risk it for a biscuit right?

The main problem I have with the Mixmaster range, is that I can't seem to find much info about them online, so by using these ones which are more 'known' I (hopefully) can make something a little more, flavourful! I'll be letting you know how I get on!
