If you use that metric, then there will be approximately ZERO teachers. I have parents who can't read or spell at a 6th grade level. Their kid is ALWAYS right & the teacher is always wrong when it comes to corrective actions for bad behavior and/or poor performance. Most times they don't even comprehend the subject being taught. I don't & won't "suck up". I tell 'em how the rat ate the cheese. So I call bullshirt on that idea.

If they want to "grade" me, then have another professional who's certified in my discipline and has the same, or similar, credentials come in and do my assessment. I didn't HAVE to get a Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction. I wanted it. I wanted to be a more effective teacher. I certainly didn't do it 'for the money'. The pay differential is minimal. I'd have to teach for ~40 years to come close to making that money back.

If they keep fluxing with the educational system, I'll tough out the next 7 years, "retire early" (at 60), and go deliver pizzas or so something where I'm treated with respect by the customer & my boss.

/Rant off

sorry ya won't get much respect from customers delivering pizza. the cooks screw up the orders and its always the drivers fault...

Heres my :2c:
We homeschooled our girls through elementary school.there wasnt an anti school or nut job agenda. We just loved our kids and wanted to share their early learning with them.in NH, anybody can homeschool their kids, as long as they submit an approved curriculum every year and have a teacher evaluate the kids once a year.we "unschooled", which more or less meant that learning was drawn rom experience. the kids loved it, and I believe that the bond between my girls and i is that much stronger because we learned together. Every year, up until 6th grade, they chose to learn by homeschooling. They were/are both honor students throughout their school yearss. Ones graduated, off to college...
my point? The best way, at least IMHO, to learn is through a balanced approach. This means parents, kids, and theunder celebrated, dedicated professionals. When every one cooperates, the child benefits.

I don't think the school I went to ever called the parents, they just took you out to the hall and BAM!
Now if you were really bad you got to go to the principals office and he would paddle you really hard with the paddle with holes in it.

Oh...no...the ONLY reason she called my mom was cause my mom told her (via the letter) she wasn't allowed to paddle me. Had it not been for that, there would never have been a phone call

yea...it's hard to get a good teacher to care much about how a kid is doing if they have parent's who don't care. It's like butting your head against a titanium wall to teach that kid. Teachers NEED to have that at home support....and so do the kids!

My choice to pull my kid out of public school and home school really wasn't due to lack of good teachers or my lack of respect for them. As I stated before, I have friends who are teachers. It was due to the "other stuff" the system is teaching and the ridiculousness of it! Of course, the teacher that landed him in Saturday detention for having to go to his locker didn't HAVE to play the money game and just let him take 2 min to run to his locker to get his book....or better yet.....let him go to the locker and give him extra homework  something constructive....it takes them longer to go to the bathroom and back than to make a locker trip

sorry count. what i had said there wasnt that well thought out to convay what i was thinking at the time. i totally agree with you. my statement really was geared with the assumption of intelligent and involved parrents like those of use here (which unfortunately i believe are prolly becomming the minority these days) and was intended to apply to the teachers that dont share your ideals and are there because thats just their job or chosen career path. sounds like your one heck of a teacher and i wish i could send my kid to your class because some teachers of your caliber would be able to get my kid to better realize his full potential. he is super smart when you can get him to focus in on what he is supposed to be learning rather then fidgeting and screwing around - something dw and i seem to have a hard time getting him to do lately largely in part i think to the class environment he is in now. his other teachers did such a better job and he made amazing progress where now it almost seems like he is going backwards in some areas. we even agreed to have him start going to a special reading class with a different teacher for part of the day because hes now struggling with it quite a bit more than he used to at the beginning of this class year. and some of the reading i have been having to help him with now is stuff he was able to figure out on his own then...
but also i try to remind myself he is only 7 and has a long way to go and hopefully his future teachers will do better :)
