Hey everyone, greetings from Afghanistan. I am a Marine of 10 years on the tail end of what is hopefully my last trip to the desert. As I'm sure is the case with most new members, I've battled and lost many of fights with analogs. A friend told me about e-cigs and his success with them. The buttons were flying off the keyboard and google eventually lead me here. I have a kGo from Hoosier's and some carto's & juice from madvapes on the way here, should get it in a day or so.

I've been lurking and learning for about a week, but questions about BoxMod design have brought me to my first post. Hopefully someone here can answer this. If not, I'll have to wait till I get enough posts to head down to the Modding forum.

Question is: Can an Atty/Carto and a 6x6 Tact Switch fit side by side in a 2xAA box? Tact switch is 3.4mm tall not counting the button. The battery well has to be at least 14mm wide, and from from I found on here standard Atty/Carto's are 9-9.5mm. So that should leave me with about 1mm clearance. It sounds real tight, but if reality is close to my math, then 1mm is plenty. I'm good with working in tight space. Just need someone to verify my thinking since I don't have the parts readily available here.

Pic inst exactly to scale but this is what I'm trying to accomplish.

Here is a pic of a carto and a tact switch in a 2xAAA box, so yes it will fit.

...
Not the switch placement that I'm looking for, but the bottom corner is my alternate location if it wont fit up at the top by the carto.

Thanks for serving! Welcome to the ECF. Your design looks workable. Are you planning on using atty/carto's. Have you thought of a bottom feed? REO Grand or Mini are mechanical mods that are made from solid block of aluminum and should withstand anything over there. Have a look at reosmods.com
The kGo is coming with 2 Atty's and I ordered some Smoketech DC's and a Smoketech Tank. I'll have to see what I prefer, but the convenience of carto's vs dripping are already swaying the vote. I looked at Reo's just to see what they were. None of the feeder's that I have seen sparked my desire. Price has a lot to do with it. I'll never pay for something that I can build myself. Half joking/half serious, I'm a mechanic by birth. Building & fixing has always come easy. I wish that I had discovered boxmods before I bought the kGo. BoxMods: Simple, easy, and cheap.....it's getting real difficult to but those words together in one sentence anymore.

Welcome to ECF and thank you for your service! :toast:

It's my pleasure. :toast:

Hey there and welcome to the forum! If you stick around a little longer and get your post count up you can also ask this question in other sub-forums that may be more helpful.

One that comes to mind is-- Experiments With Equipment

Better yet would be Modding Forum

Which is all about building your own stuff and you may get some excellent advice there maybe even from someone who has had the same idea in mind as you! May be a good idea to at least look over the modding forum and see if possibly anything there already answers some of your questions! Best of luck. I'm not handy like that, wish I was. I bought my box mod. I love it though! 14500 batteries seem to last about 8 hours tops for me. I'm a heavy vaper. Defiantly go for a double cell charger!! You'll be glad you did. I hope vaping works out for you!

You'll probably need to squeeze a MOSFET in there. That tactile switch probably isn't rated for the amps.
Yep, an IRL3103 will get going in. I just havent added it to the model yet.

I've been surfing around in the Modding Forum quite a bit. Got some really good ideas, from some great mods and modders. I dont think that I'll be a "heavy" vaper. I plan to ween off of nicotine all together. That being said, I'm hoping that a 14500 will last me all day, and then recharge at night. That's why there is a charger connecter in the bottom of the design. I'm building a USB to Barrel Jack charger that will be the size of a flash drive plus the cable. If the battery doesnt last all day, then I'll have some spare bats or use the 18650 BoxMod that I have planned for at home use. Also on the list is touch switches, AAA stealth box like tj's that he posted earlier, and a 10440 parallel setup.

All day is asking a lot from a 14500. I'd carry some spares. I get 4 to 6 hours on my Reo mini. You might do better. I use LR attys. Madvapes still has a nice case that holds two 14500s very nicely on their website for less than $1.00. Unfortunately, it's been out of stock forever. I had one but, it starting cracking after 4 or 5 months. I liked it well enough that I dug up the same thing on ebay (I had to go through about 10 pages of battery cases to find what I wanted.) and bought 5 of them. :)

One note, I used to think it was hogwash but, it really doesn't pay to skimp on the batteries. Pick up some AW IMRs.

I'm about to make a few orders for this project and others...ebay, Digikey, & Mouser. Already have some 4xAA/AAA battery cases in the cart. Spare bats are easy to carry, so no big deal if the life isnt what I hope.

Now that you mention it, I have been wondering the difference between the AW IMR's and a standard Li-Po like a TrustFire. I know the chemistry is different, but I've noticed that the maH capacity is rated lower for the IMR vs a same size Trustfire. I assume that they wont last as long between charging. My knowledge of electronics tells me that as long as both batteries are capable of draining at the required amperage, then it shouldn't matter whether it is a high drain or not. I wouldn't consider 10watts at less than 3amps a high drain device needing a high drain battery. If both a capable of performing at the required specs, why not go with the larger capacity in the same size package?

The same reasoning I has when I thought it was hogwash. First, the ratings on the batteries are determined by the manufacturer and AW is a little more honest than Trustfire and Ultrafire. Don't ask me why because I don't know but, the AWs tend to provide more consistent power longer. With the *fires, you'll notice a much bigger difference as they discharge. That does tend to give you a little shorter life but, consistency's has a lot to do with satisfaction when vaping.

Frankly, I think that worries about battery safety go a little over the top on here but, with the *fires you have a protection circuit built in. With the AW IMRs, the chemistry is what makes them safer. I think the chemistry is more dependable.
