Hi everyone!!! I started vaping 2 weeks ago (blu is my choice). Cut
Down from 2 packs of
Marlboro ultra lights. I have noticed
I can smell better, and have more energy. Concerned
About my cough...it's still
Hacking and I still
Have to use my albuterol a couple of times a day (reason I quit smoking.) does vaping make you cough or have difficulty breathing? And for those trying to quit and using vaping as
Your aid, how long will you cape for? And is there anything harmful in the non nicotine cartridges?

Congrats on cutting down!

If you google 'side effects quit smoking' you will get lots of information about some of the things we can go through when quitting smoking. Many new vapers assume these are caused by vaping, when in reality they are often just side effects of quitting analogs.

As far as asthma, I have noticed that mine is worse with certain flavors. That's just a personal observation, but I found that there are a few flavors I just can't vape (or at least not at certain concentrations) because they constrict my airways too much. Pear and honey are two of these for me.

I have also read many anecdotal accounts that suggest asthma can worsen for some people when quitting smoking, although I've never read that on an 'official' quit smoking site. It does seem that it is relatively common, and confuses many quitters. I've heard that it might have something to do with the fact that cigarette smoke kind of acts to deaden the cilia of the airways, making them less responsive to irritants. Removing the deadening effect of smoke might make the cilia more irritable. That seems plausible, but as far as I know this is just conjecture.

Thank you guys do much for your replies! I'm currently on L for low nicotine. Was considering at some point moving
To no nicotine in an effort to stop.
The cough scares me and I can't wait till its gone.
What are some other positives you've noticed by switching to vaping?
The blu is VG and so far I'm impressed
With them! Have a great
Day everyone.

Queen312, welcome to ECF!

Congratulations on having cut down so far, and ECF will be here for you as you go forward through the journey of quitting smoking.

I'm copying here the response I made to another's question in the same manner as yours regarding coughing and health. I get long winded sometimes, but this is information I do like to share. This early in the morning, though, I may make more typos than I care to without coffee yet. ;)

Here is my advice: Go see your doctor.

When I quit smoking - and switched to vaping - I went to my doctor for other reasons after a couple of weeks. I told him I stopped cigarettes, though I was still vaping. He was ecstatic that I'd quit the tobacco cigarettes, and promptly started telling me what to expect over the next several months now that I'd stopped smoking. It included increased congestion, possibly for 5 to 10 months, as the cilia once destroyed by the smoke, tar, ash, and other chemicals from cigarette smoke now began to regrow and start pushing the mucus and other icky stuff up and away from the lungs up the "phlegm elevator." This, accompanied by allergies due to the season, was likely to make me pretty uncomfortable for a while, and he suggested using whatever over-the-counter decongestant worked for me - and would not interact with my other medications - until the symptoms begin to ease up. I only use the decongestant when I'm really miserable, and am controlling my own "recovery" from cigarette smoking. The doctor explained that eventually the coughing would turn into a "full" cough, meaning that what needs to be gotten rid of will be done so right away instead of the smokers' cough which keeps us constantly trying to hack up the gunk we inhaled after killing all our little cilia friends. In addition, our lungs start to slowly repair and regenerate tissue and slough off dead cells and contaminants for us to cough up, too. So, the congestion may actually seem worse even though we are in the process of healing.

(snipped out a wall portion here)

So. See your doctor. There are so many factors that will affect us all differently. And, what seems to be wrong may actually be right - just by examining the differences in cough or congestion or heart rate and breathing. Time is a big factor, and may take more than a few weeks or a few months to see the real result.

Welcome Queen312 - coughing is also a symptom of quitting smoking (with or without vaping) and it goes away fairly quickly.

I've been vaping but smoking 0-5 cigs a day for 2 1/2 months, so I consider this HUGE harm reduction.

You asked about benefits:
My morning in-the-shower hacking cough is GONE. GONE I tell you!
I seriously have more energy - even as a heavy smoker, I walk and bike and even run sometimes and I feel much, much better with more endurance now.
I think my skin is looking better - more clear, better color.
My sense of smell has improved - driving down a country road the other day I realised I could smell all the decaying roadkill; never noticed it before. LOL! OK, maybe that's not so great.
My clothes don't stink any more, I don't stink, my house doesn't stink, my vehicles don't stink. I don't feel self-conscious about breathing on my non-smoking friends right after I've had a cigarette.
My dentist, my doctor and my non-smoking friends are proud of me. That feels really good.
