Hey guys,

I got a pack of those new Kanger coils (with the enclosed wicks), and I'm wondering if anyone has taken them apart yet for some serious cleaning? I tried a bit of searching but came up empty. Also, my second Spinner II is quite stiff compared to my first, both the button and dial take quite a bit more force to operate. Has anyone encountered this, and did it get better over time or did you return it to the shop? Thanks.

When I got my spinner 2 in the mail, I was kinda bummed out because the button would stick if you pressed it a certain way. Over time, it loosened up, though.

I saw a video a while ago by Pbusardo (I think or maybe Rip Tripper) where he took apart one of the new enclosed kanger coils. It was not easy. The new coils are simply the old coils with an enclosing sleeve and a different rubber grommet on the chimney.

Just an FYI, the newer enclosed style and the older dual coils both fit in every kanger dual coil tank. I've read of many people preferring the older style to the new style plus the older are very easy to rebuild.

Well I wouldn't recommend rebuilding the new kanger coils. The shaft gets bent easily, if you manage to disassemble the coil without any issues the cover doesn't go back over the housing.
That's too bad, but the old ones are still easy to get. Honestly though, I've tried rebuilding one of their dual coils and it's quite a pain to get them both aligned, even with guides. I think I'll just throw a single coil in there with cotton and upgrade to a proper rebuildable with a larger single coil in the future.

I'm disappointed with the enclosed heads - I suspect it's just an attempt to cut out rebuilding so more money needs to be spent on new heads instead of a cheap rebuild with kanthal & silica (or cotton wool). I rebuild the older non-enclosed evod2/ protank3 (I've got both) BCC dual coils with a single OVAL coil (I can't claim it as my idea - I base it on a You Tube video I saw (REBUILDING DUAL COIL HEADS FOR PROTANK 3 by Bill Bottoms). Using two 1.5mm drill bit shanks gives me an oval coil 1.5mm "wide" x 3mm "tall" and I use a loop of 2mm silica wick which I pull through using a needle threader (so when trimmed gives 2 x 2mm wicks one above the other through the coil - and no "flavour" wick). I find this works great with no leaks/ gurgling but a good flow and vape cloud. I tried organic, boiled cotton wool but no matter how tight/ loose I packed it I always had a cottony after taste that spoiled light (custard/ vanilla type) flavours for me. I still find it easy to rewick using the loop pull-through method after dry-burning (taking care not to overdo it and burn the insulating grommet) and then washing the head/ coil assembly.

I watched that video too and I was tempted to ask here if anyone had tried it. I have 3 Protank 3 minis that I haven't rebuilt yet (one is still in the box). I might try the oval coil method when the time comes. Do you use 28ga Kanthal

I didn't like the new coils in my 2 EVOD Glass. Gurgling was annoying and flavor was not as good as my cotton/microcoil rebuilds in my original EVODs & PT2. I simply rebuilt the DC heads with single cotton/microcoils. They work brilliantly and the flavor is much better.

Yep - I used 28 gauge kanthal and seven wraps gives me exactly 2 ohms (I might go down a turn next time around to get down towards 1.5). I leave the drill bits (or a couple of slightly sanded cocktail sticks) in place in the coil when fitting to the head which helps align it with the "hole" for the wicks - first time around I tried fitting it all back together (without a wick) with the chimney and silicone sealing gasket to check the fit and the size is about perfect. I didn't have a needle threader handy the first time, so (after taking the seal and chimney back off) I just bent an offcut of kanthal to make a <> shaped loop and pushed that sideways through the coil, then fed the 2mm silica wick through that and pulled the wire back through, drawing a loop of the wick into place. Easy! I've done this for my Evod 2 glass and Protank 3 tanks with good results (best vape from the Protank, I use the airflow control base!) , hope it works well for you.

My mancave
The small bit of coil building I've tried so far has me almost convinced that I'm one of those people who should just buy his coils. But what you're describing, h0tsh0t, sounds like it'd make the task easier if ever I did decide to re-coil my beloved PT3. That's assuming, of course, that I'd also like the performance of that particular single-coil build equally to or better than the standard dual ones in the 3.

Thank you! (And thanks to Bill Bottoms, as well. I'll be sure to give him a "like" when I see his video.)

Oh, and P.S.: Has anyone had dry hitting (or any other) issues with the new Kanger enclosed wick dual coils? I just switched to 20/80 e-juice, and when I opened my box of the new-style coils, my first thought went to wicking potential. "Will the added restriction cause my new VG-heavy juice to not be able to keep up with me when I'm chaining several draws in a quick row?"

Thanks for the tips:) The guy in the video used cotton "squares". Not sure exactly what they are but I assume one could cut some strips from a cotton pad made for removing makeup. The silica wick idea seems like a good one.
Yeah, I couldn't find squares at a sensible price, but did find some organic oval pads - same thing really. Even though it said organic I boiled/ dried some anyway but - as I mentioned in my earlier post - no matter how tight/ loose I made the wick I couldn't get rid of a cottony taste even after a couple of tankfuls of juice. (I tried the wool unboiled too in case it made a difference - it didn't). It's a shame as I would really have liked to use the cotton wool - I may donate the pads to my wife for her makeup and try again with a differnet brand of cotton wool, but not hopeful. Anyway, for now I'm happy that I found I can easily rewick using the loop pull-through method I described earlier - my main worry was otherwise having to rebuild the coils a lot more often which would have been a pain.

Just an update. I've tried again with cotton wool and found it ok with stronger flavoured juices (I think my problem was trying it with delicate ice-cream/ custard type juices and then the cottony taste came through). I just modified one of my bases (MT3) by drilling out the air holes slightly for an easier draw, dry burnt/ rinsed the coil and wicked with cotton wool before loading with "Virginia" tobacco flavour. Good vapour now, and nice taste. It's funny really, because as a non-smoker for 40 years I started vaping by being attracted to the idea of vaping dessert and fruit flavours but was curious to see if I could recall the flavours of the "John Player Specials" I used to smoke as a young lad - more in hope of a "cool image" than anything, I suppose! I remember they had sexy black and gold packaging with the logo to match their racing cars... ;)

There's some discussion here about cleaning and rebuilding the new coils: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/general-e-smoking-discussion/586286-new-kanger-dual-coils.html
