I am a 53 year old male, I have been smoking since I was 16 with the exception of an 8 year absence 7 years ago. So that is ~29 years of smoking in total. 2014 is the year I am going to quit for good – health reasons. I have decided after some reading that I will probably need to replace one habit (tobacco) with another (E-cig). For the past 7 years I have smoked Menthol (1.5 packs a day) with the last 3 using roll your own (Premier tubes and Rave tobacco, both Menthol). I smoke at work about 12 cigarettes over an 8 hour period.

I have read just enough about E-cigs to be totally confused ; as equipment goes.

I am currently spending ~ 65 a month for tobacco supplies. I would like to start off spending less than 2 months worth on E-cig equipment. So to start out with a kit and liquid valued at ~$130.

A couple of things that bother me about the equipment is that most of the ‘popular’ units look like a tricorder from Star Trek. Not for me! The others look like they are the size of the Salami hanging behind the butchers counter, again, not for me.

My wish list is as follows: (Yeah I know)

Smallish footprint.
No liquid showing - perhaps just a sight glass.
Fair battery life. USB charging appears to be a nice option.
Fits in a pocket - front shirt or rear pant.
Somewhat easy to maintain – I have no problem stocking replacement parts. I absolutely do not want or need another hobby.

Any info or experiences you can share would be appreciated.

This is the best I can find to meet your criteria and it is what I started with 3 years ago. To start I recommend using 18 to 24mg of nicotine. It is much easier to cut your nicotine later than to quit cigarettes.

Beginner - E-Cig Starter Kits | Vapor4Life E-Cigarette

I will add that battery life depends on size. You cannot get good battery life from a small battery. What you can do is carry 2 to 4 batterys to get through a day of vaping. This isn't one of the cheapest brands but it is one of the better ones. They even have pre-filled cartos if that's what you want.

I recommend getting a variety of flavors. Unless you are very lucky you are not likely you to like the first one you try. They will not taste like a cigarette.

Well, I don't know if this fits with your expectations of looks, but otherwise it is a fantastic device and fairly cost effective ITaste VV v3.0 by Innokin. As for what you put on top to hold the juice, there are a lot of options, you will need to do some research to see which fit your criteria, but I suggest looking at the EVOD clearomizers, they are MOSTLY covered and don't show the liquid, other than a slight space so you can see the juice level and know when it needs to be filled.

YMMV!

Good luck!

Here is a setup I recommend to my friends. Works well, the battery life is decent, comes with two batteries just so you always have a backup and is fairly simple to use. This is what I used when I started and it is still going strong 4 months later. The atomizers typically last me between 1-2 weeks, some people carefully clean them and can get around a month.

The YouTube link is a review done by Phil Busardo and explains the pros and cons of the eroll better than I could.

Most people here will recommend some sort of ego battery type setup, but I couldn't get past the look of them at first. When I first got into vaping I needed the cigarette like form factor and this one has the best performance of any cig-a-like out there now. You can always get something bigger later if you want. Best of luck to you!

Second Devauto's suggestion. The VV3 is a good unit, although only 800 mAh, so you might want two. It does have USB pass-through. Being VV/VW, it gives you the ability to tune the vape to your tastes. Look for the newer 6 rivet model, and avoid the "pen cap" model that doesn't have Ego threads.

Similar in appearance and performance to the Evod is the Kanger MT3S, which holds more. May be another option. (Why don't you want to see the juice level? I like to tell at a quick glance how much is there... the thin sight glass look on the Evod and MT3S is sometimes a bit of a challenge.)

I DON'T recommmed putting your vape in a hip pocket - too easy to sit down and break it!

First, a couple of links to get you started:
Proper terminology - Is it a carto, a tank, or what? A Guide to Juice Attachments.
A Good Starter's Setup for a Beginning Vapor

At work I only vape a little here and there for very short periods. I drip with a 306 or 510-t atomizer on a 650mah eGo battery. Very small and discreet.

Otherwise, I use mostly carto-tanks plus an occasional top-coil clearomizer (CE5, T2, or Vivi Nova) on various batteries and mods.

But, even just a simple cartomizer will do the job if you get the right resistance for your tastes. Plus cartomizers on skinny batteries are closest to the look and feel of a cigarette. But, I personally find them frustrating.

I have a very hard time knowing what to suggest to people because we all have such different tastes and needs. But, if nothing else, the links to Baditude's blog entries will hopefully help you get started.

Good luck!

Congrats on quitting! My father switched to vaping when periphery artery disease threatened his leg - 3 packs a day to cold turkey vaping, lol. I prefer the larger mods for battery capacity, but my wife has quit successfully and is vaping on an ego-type battery which last HER all day. Similar to these: Smok eGo Winder 1300mAh Variable Volt Battery
They are small and portable, while not looking like hanging salami.

Your wishes for your setup are exactly what I was looking for when I began vaping almost two years ago -I certainly did not want a setup that looked like a Trident 3 stage rocket and I was not looking for a new hobby.

What I wound up with is several ego 650 mah vv batteries (for the size) topped off with Kanger T3S Bottom coil clearos. The heads on the clearos are easy to clean and/or inexpensive to replace.

The size of the setup is about the size of an old fashioned fountain pen and easily fits in a shirt pocket. The only thing that does not meet your requirements is that the liquid is visible in the T3S, but that just lets you know when to refill.

The only concession that I have made to a larger setup was to get a larger ego 1000 mah battery for home use.

Good luck on your search for your ideal setup.

i'm just getting into it myself, but was looking specifically for ease of use to start - settled on a Halo Triton. i'll end up upgrading eventually, but this seemed a good starting place (and their Subzero liquid replaced menthol's rather well for me)

I am also a 53 year old male so I hear ya. If you want to save money and skip the "upgrading" which will burn more money in the long run I suggest you check out the REO Grand. I use it with the RM2 (a re-buildable atomizer) but you can start out using cartomizers for simplicity sake. The battery and the juice on board last me all day easily. Throw it in your pocket in the morning and you have trouble free vaping all day.

Best of luck to you!

This is probably a good starting point for you:
Kanger Evod Starter Kit

Evods are the tank type with just a little slit to see your liquid fill level, super easy to maintain and such.

Welcome :)

This suggestion is probably the one for you. These devices when assembled are very compact and discrete. The price point on the kit that CreepyLady linked is great as well. If you were to buy two of those kits, you would be set. Those batteries will probably charge in 1.5 hours each and most likely last you (based on the amount you smoke) somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 hours per charge. You would then have 4 batteries, 4 EVOD Clearomizers, a charger, and replacement heads. All you would need to buy for upkeep would be more heads down the road and juice.

You say you do not want a hobby, but trust me ... it's coming. It will get you no matter how badly you don't want it to! lol. Having said that, I would much rather have a hobby that allows me to breathe and smell, not smell like an ..., not have to clean the items I touch or sit by when smoking. Best of luck!

I have to disagree. A mechanical and rebuild-able atomizers are not a good place for a beginner to start. They do not a have any safety features and require some knowledge of batteries to be used safely. Especially by someone who has made it clear that he does not want a new hobby.

Wow. I have to say THANK YOU for all of the great comments and suggestions. You guys and gals make for a very nice forum.

I have printed out all of the posts and will review in detail all of the information.

The more I read about vaping, the more I am losing my preconceived notions about certain things.

Thanks again for the warm welcome and all of the information. I will surely keep this thread updated regarding the direction I actually take.
