Hi, welcome to ECF. You're getting great advice on your setup needs, so I will merely state that I was not one of the "fictional unicorns" who put down cigarettes with ease, and just vaped. I first encountered e-cigs probably 7 years ago quit right away for a bit but as stress mounted returned to dual use and then just cigarettes.
This time I had some added motivations to make
vaping work for me, but I also didn't expect instant success right away. I decided to cut out my first cigarette of the day, delaying it by about 20 minutes, and then just kept extending the time (if I didn't, I knew I'd be smoking all day long) I just kind of gradually tapered as I learned more about e-cigs, my style of
vaping, juices I enjoyed and etc. I got a lot of support from the forum as I went, and it was super helpful. My first cigarette free day, I was genuinely shocked.
The thing that helped me the most was continuing to vape, I would vape right before (sometimes during) a cigarette, and right after to convince myself "I am a vaper." I would pay attention to what a cigarette was "getting" me and over time they became less and less satisfying.
Some folks use a "strict" taper plan to help with detox, and that can work as well.
The main thing I'd say is, I was a 3 ppd smoker--- No matter what, I was going to have to detox off tar, other things in cigarettes and etc. It wasn't pleasant, but it was achievable. I had a few catastrophic "falling of the wagon" moments too, but I just picked myself up, dusted myself off, reminded myself I was a vaper, and climbed right back on the cart.
It is very, very common for some dual use to occur as one switches over to
vaping fully, but it doesn't have to be catastrophic, and can even be planned. For me, as a 3 ppd smoker, sure, I had some suffering along the way (and a still smoking husband) but I just kept reminding myself that detox would pass (and it has) and that unless I moved to the Sahara desert (probably even then). Cigarettes were available, any time, any where, and ONE pack wouldn't even be expensive... But it WOULD put me back into smoking mode, and every quit is different. As COPD approached, I did NOT want to have to go through detox twice. Once was plenty, and now that I'm firmly vaping, I don't want to jeopardize THIS quit, as every one is different and there is no saying that I would be successful in the future.
Best of luck, and most of all keep vaping!
Anna
