Hi everybody,
I'm relatively new to vaping and created an account so I could ask questions and (hopefully) contribute.

I got started on cigalike products (green smoke) and transitioned pretty quickly to the Kanger Evod. I love the Evod but I wanted to experiment with different clearonizers and am limited due to the fixed voltage of kanger batteries. I just ordered an I-stick 30W because I can continue to use my current clearomizer, experiment with others, and actually see the battery life. I may experiment with subohming eventually.

I'm looking to learn more about safe usage of a Variable voltage/variable wattage battery, and especially interested in learning more about thinking in terms of wattage, rather than just voltage and ohms law.

Thanks for reading!

hi @GoBlue88 and welcome to the forum. When you get the iStick 30 W it will come with the power set on maximum. You MUST turn it down BEFORE putting a tank on it. Click the power/fire button 5 times for on/off. Click the power/fire button 3 times to select watts and turn it down to 7 or 8. Put on a primed tank and take a hit. Bump it up one and hit it again. Continue until you find the sweet spot or until it gets too warm or starts to taste burnt. Back it down if it goes bad.

The technique of starting low and working your way up is the same for every tank/clearo you will ever use.

The Nautilus Mini is a perfect match for the iStick 30 W. (I have 4 of them)

Good luck in your vape journey.

Thanks for the info. I was told in a B&M shop that if you put in a wattage the voltage will automatically adapt to the wattage. Is this correct? Also, I'm considering getting a subtank nano. I'm concerned having a catastrophic problem (like if I am using my evod clearomizers after subohming and don't adjust the wattage/voltage). I was told that the I stick 30 will identify the error and not fire. Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct. A power regulated device (where you set the watts rather than the volts) will automatically adjust voltage to maintain the set wattage

As to your second question, the Istick will give you an error in certain situations, but nothing is totally idiot-proof. The user manual should explain the particular scenarios that it protects against.

Yes. And vice versa as well. If you are running in wattage mode the iStick will automatically adjust the voltage.

Consider the Kanger Mini Subtank (not the nano). The mini comes with a RBA base so you can build you own coils if you don't want to buy more stock coils.

Somewhat correct. The iStick will identify that the ohms of the coil has changed but will fire it at whatever wattage/voltage you are set at.

I run in wattage mode so if I was using a 0.5Ω coil at 25 watts and did not change the wattage when I changed to a 1.8Ω coil, chances are I would get an instant "dry/burnt hit" if I did not lower the wattage first.

Thanks for the info. My Evod tanks came with safe voltage ranges for each resistance setting. How do I operate in wattage mode and ensure my voltage operates in the safe range of voltage settings? Thanks in advance.

The easiest way to do it is to just start low (~ 8 watts) and slowly raise you wattage until you find a setting that works well for you. If you start getting a burnt taste (i.e. dry hit) take your wattage down a notch or two.

You could also use an Ohm's Law Calculator to do a conversion from voltage to wattage.

When you operate in wattage mode, you have no control over voltage. The machine measure the resistance of the atomizer it's wearing and applies whatever voltage is required to deliver the watts you have set (assuming this lies within it's power.)

Why do you suggest the nautilus mini? I just put in an order for a manger sub tank nano because dimensionally it was about the same height, but had the capability to sub ohm. I'll definitely try various glassizers/clearomizers, and am curious why you singled out the nautilus mini. Thanks in advance.

The Nautilus Mini is a better vape than what you are now using. In my opinion it's probably the best tank before growing into sub ohm. It certainly is my most trusted and easy to use. If I were to suggest a tank for Sub Ohm I would have suggested the Kanger Subtank Mini. You can buy 1.2 ohm and .5 ohm factory OCC coils, plus it has a rebuild deck where you can learn to coil your own. You'll be fine with the Nano, the 30W iStick gives you lots of options.

Thanks for the feedback. I mainly chose the nano for the dimensions/liquid capacity balance with subohming being secondary. I'll look more into the nautilus mini.

The first thing I did when I got my subtanks was to swap out the wide bore drip tip for a more restricted one (bought a cheap replacement). I am a mouth to lung vape, and the common practice for subtanks is lung hits. With the air flow cut down and the restricted drip tip I can mouth to lung sub ohms if I desre.

The full size Nautilus is 5ml capacity. The Nautilus Mini is 2.5ml capacity. I have both, sorta like the mini better but don't really have a reason why.
