Dear all,
Please forgive me if this is not a proper place to say this. I am a new member in this forum. I am here not for myself but for my father, who is a terrible smoker. one day, my mom bought him a kind of e-cigarette in order to make him quite smoking. But it did not work. I heard smoking can cause many kinds of diseases such as duodenal ulcers, respiratory infections, AKI, lips, tongue, esophagus, the respiratory tract, lung and other terrible diseases. I am very worried about that. so I am here to seek a solution for this.

Hi and welcome. While vaping has helped many people kick the nasty habit, and might work for your dad, I regret to inform you the key ingredient is desire. If your dad doesn't want to quit, no kind of vaping experience will help him. Every person is different. Getting the right kind of equipment, and juice(s) you like and work for you is a process requiring some time using trial and error. This process can not be successfully completed without wanting to do it. If you dad wants to quit, fine: we'll do our best to help and we're actually pretty good at it. We've been where he is, and we will understand what his problems are no matter how poorly he describes them, and we can suggest things for him to try that helped us over the hump. But it's not something you can do for him, I am afraid. Sorry for the bad news, and welcome to the board.

Sometimes people can quit who never actually intended to quit -- it kinda happens by accident when they get so busy vaping, they forget to smoke. :D But that requires the vape to be so good, such a realistic substitute for the cigarettes that they kinda don't notice that they're not smoking, until it's been a day or three without cigarettes.

I never intended quitting when I first got here, I just wanted some way to "smoke" indoors so I didn't have to go out and freeze to death... it was only when I saw all the success stories round here that I started wondering if I'd finally found a way to quit that didn't entail massive suffering -- because I had wanted to quit for a couple decades, just could never actually make it happen.

But if someone has no intention to quit, no desire to quit, no desire to find an alternative.... I'm sorry but you cannot MAKE anyone do anything. I realize that's a hard thing to understand in today's control-freak world, but that's a fact -- all one can offer is motivation, reward or punishment. If you aren't prepared to hold a gun to his head to prevent him from smoking, you cannot make him stop -- he has to make a choice to do so, and be committed to that choice, or it will never happen.

Vaping is not a magic wand -- even those of us who make the choice and are 100% committed to it have our difficulties; vaping just makes quitting easier than anything else that's ever been invented. But it cannot substitute for a personal choice and commitment.

Its not easy for long-time smokers to finally say enough is enough. I have been smoking for 55 years and have finally come to a point in my life that its either keep smoking and continue with ill health (have COPD) or quit. It is a learning curve to find the right equipment that works for you. I have spent a lot of money till I found the right equipment and the right liquid that works for me. Maybe have your father read some of the forums of other people struggling to quit. There is a wealth of info on this forum and genuine people willing to help through the rough spots.

I have a strong feeling that it won't, if the people around him are interested in "making" him quit -- I'd keep smoking just to spite them, personally. :D

Welcome,

The small batteries that look like a cigarette often do not work. Involve your Dad in the process. It is his journey. Ask if he really wants to quit smoking. Find out what he liked and did not like about the e-cigarette. Then, perhaps we can provide some suggestions. One is that he does not have to quit smoking cold turkey. He can continue to smoke while using the e-cigarettes to help reduce the number of times he smokes each day.

BTW, change the Location on your profile. It shows your home address. Leave it as Shirley,NY or just NY.

Hello and welcome, Kahame! There is a lot of very good advice already so let me just say that you are doing a wonderful thing trying to help your mother, help your father. From my experience, it is very important that your father also WANTS to quit smoking, as the first couple of weeks are often frustrating and difficult to adapt to the changes. If one can get past those with resolve to quit, then the chances of vaping being the solution are very, very good.

So good luck to you, and my compliments on the love and care you feel for your father!

I am your father, Luke.

Seriously, I was a long term very heavy smoker. Old and set in my ways. I stopped smoking by vaping in 3 days. I did this using small cig-sized batteries and cartomizers. Unlike others, I'm not convinced that size matters all that much.

However, while I wasn't seriously trying to quit, I was trying to cut down. I was using lozenges mostly. But, like Andrea said, I quit by accident. Just realized that I could quit smoking by vaping...a real epiphany.

You can provide the equipment and encouragement (don't push or nag) and hope. The rest is up to him.

I was using a cigalike when I quit, too... but the shortcomings of those were already evident to me, after using it for 3-4 wks. The actual first day smoke-free, I upgraded to a "pen style" -- vv3 with a T3S on top -- and that completely sealed the deal: bigger "tank", longer battery life, better throat hit, and variable power, so I could adjust it on the fly for a perfect hit.

One thing I wanted to add, about the commitment to quitting smoking: one of the greatest things I've found with using vaping to quit was that I didn't have to quit all at once, like with patches or pills; I was able to make the switch gradually, vaping more and more, smoking less and less, because the more I vaped, the worse the cigarettes tasted. When I was down to 5 or less per day, I even started getting some of my sense of smell back, and that helped a lot too, because I could actually smell how awful cigarettes really stink. If your dad is willing to vape *at all*, he might just start off substituting vaping for just a few cigarettes per day -- any cigarettes not smoked are a BIG WIN; the more he can get accustomed to it, the better he will probably like it, and the less he will enjoy cigarettes. So it's not necessary, if he's interested in vaping AT ALL, for him to drop cigarettes like a rock. I found that EXTREMELY comforting, when I first started vaping.
