The iStick30 and Nautilus tank that Falconeer suggested is a good choice. I, personally, am not a fan of the Naut but lots of folks love 'em. I use a rebuildable tank (RTA). The istick will give you variable wattage, longer battery life and the ability to move up to higher performing tanks. I think you'll be very happy with that setup.
On buying from a shop (yeah the prices will be higher, but...) offer help when you have a problem and can provide hands on training for getting started. Their is more to the transition from a plug-n-play cig-a-like to a mod. Having a helping hand available when you need one, priceless.

... These days, the best value for money and effective e-cigs (that are easily good enough to quit) are small box mods and a nice tank. ...

In this vein I offer this suggestion.

For a tank: [ T-Dux 4.0, 1.5 Ohm Dual Coil, Stainless | Vaping Mall ]

For a small box mod: [ XPro M22 Mod $19.99 | Vaping Mall ]

Dual coil head assemblies for the tank run about $10.00 USD for a five pack. The tank can use single coil assemblies, which bring costs down a bit. I am rather happy with the output and quality of this set up. cost inclusive of set up I estimate at around $30.00 USD or less if you use codes, reward points.

You do not need to spend thousands for a golden ticket set up to enjoy vaping, to quit smoking. You can if you want and there is plenty of various shinnies out there waiting for your credits. Go on, buy you some swag bling! :) Think most of us do a bit as we realize we spend less on vaping gear than we would ever spend on cigarettes, snuff, chew.

Got the bling shopping out of your system? Okay, well then remember the nice folks at ECF giving you pointers to what you thought was cheap junk. Do a little looking, kick some tires. You'll find some nice moderate set up. "Modwomper be you shall, see and wait you." :)

Things can be very confusing at the start; I remember that stage only too well - especially when people talked about rebuildable equipment winding coils etc etc - hence the reason I asked if there were a good vape shop near you that you could visit so that they could walk you through the basic.

The basic idea is easy enough - you have a tank that holds the liquid, in that tank there's a heating element called a coil which turns the liquid in to steam, and the whole shebang won't work unless there's the right battery attached to it - after that it can get a bit more complicated!

Coils burn out; some people who are technically good, have sound eyes, steady hands, understand Ohms Law and have a test meter build their own. I could be wrong but to my mind the best thing a beginner can get is a tank with factory built coils which he/she can replace easily - a thing you will need to do when they either fail totally, produce noticeably less vapour or start to taste bad.

People use different vaping styles - some like to produce big clouds of vapour, some worry more about taste of the liquid and some just want nic asap - so batteries with variable settings allow this.

Hope some of this helps a bit to start with...

Thanks for all your input guys, its appreciated, Gotta be honest, im still a bit baffled by it all, well the mod side of things, lol
Think I need a degree in engineering to work some of this out:)

You'd be OK. Most hardware is really straightforward.

Where are you @charliechaplin? Some shops are really not good (£ or advice)...

Shall I look in my box for 'stuff' ? ... you never know. I have tanks and liquids that need a home, but not sure about batteries.

Again - I think a lot of us probably felt like that at the beginning - remember feeling like that when I first went into a specialised pipe shop, a specialised cycling shop a specialised camera shop and a specialised watch boutique...just always bear in mind no one is born knowing everything and learning curves can be steep or long - just take things at your own pace and learn one step at a time.

The learning process in anything goes : unconscious incompetence - conscious incompetence - conscious competence - unconscious competence!

looks a decent bet for a novice like myself, i hope lol just gotta source the e-liquid now! any recommendations for ordering juice in the UK?

@charliechaplin

That was THE kit for beginners not so long ago. You'll do OK with that.

Now.. liquid.

Short story... avoid the nasty brands that promise the world and charge you £4.99.

I use these guys.

I havent had time to pop into that shop as yet, I know they sell liquid in the poundland or Homebargains, not sure if its any good but then again I wouldnt know anyway, lol

The only thing about the one I ordered is people say the wicks go! so may need to order some more of them once im up and running.

HB and £1-land is not good. Yes... zzz... I've tried them all.

You will need replacement coils soon enough. (coil and wick = one 'unit')

I used to get mine here.

Protank & Evod Coil head - Accessories

cheers mate, what do you think of this liquid?
£1 British Tobacco E Liquid | 10ml Tobacco E Cig Liquid | UK Made - LiQuid
I know nothing so will be trial and error, but if its a slightly stronger hit than my ecigs ill be happy going for the 18mg to see how i go

I've ordered that one four times in 6 orders (according to my account).
It's quite OK. The American Lites is very mild (but nice ish). The Virginia (good) is similar to all those generic 'Dekang' tobaccos. The Black is licourice, probably my favourite.
The Premium is... meh...
The Ry4 is tasteless.
The Custards are dire.
