New member here. Been vaping on & off for about a year. Started getting into RDAs & rebuilding Kanger coils a few months back. Recently decided to try out a kayfun clone after trying one in a shop that uses them for samplers.

Picked up an ehpro Kayfun Nano. Using a pretty basic build. doubled over 2mm wick & 30 ga kanthal. Ist coil was 2.2 ohm. Taste was pretty terrible, kind of metallic. 2nd build is 1.8 ohm. Played with the coil height & found the closer the coil got to the deck the worse it got. RIght now I have it 1-2 mm above the screw terminals. Still have that off kinda metallic taste, just not as bad. Vapor production seems good.

Any suggestions? I have rinsed it out under hot water & wiped it down twice now. Not sure if I need to wash it more thoroughly than normal, or something else is going on.

Thanks

Wow, lot of fast responses. Thanks.

I don't think the taste is from the coil. I did pulse it red to test it. Do the same on my Igo & haven't gotten this taste before.

I'll give it a thorough scrubbing with some dish soap & try the Vodka soak too. Have some high proof stuff that's been sitting in the back of the bar for a while. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think I may need to throw in the towel on this one.

Scrubbed all parts down with dish soap & a toothbrush 4 times now, along with several soaks in soapy water or grain alcohol. Got slightly better, but that unpleasant metallic taste is still there.

Saw online where someone had used a soak in coca cola. Tried that for a few hours. Then rinsed & followed up with a soak in hot water & cafiza, a mild citric based cleaner I use on my espresso machine. Still have the same bad taste.

Pretty frustrated at this point. Not sure if I just got a bad example of a clone, or what.

Any suggestions? Also, are the genuine kayfuns pretty clean from the factory, or are they like the clones? Wondering if I should have just gone for a genuine in the first place.

my own kayfun 3.1 had an off taste for about the first week at least.

seems to me the problem is down in the atomizer base part where there is the airway, the air control screw, and the fill screw, plus there is supposed to be a valve in the fill screw area; so any machine oil down inside of there isn't going to get out with a simple hot water rinse like what I did.

I'd suggest with new kayfun you gotta get that needle bottle with hot water, and squirt away through those holes in the base, then put the thing to soak for a few hours with all screws out.

If you use soapy water, then remember to squirt with needle bottle of hot water afterwards to get the soap out too.

I've had almost no issues with my Svoemesto Kayfun 3.1 clones from FT. Up to 8 between the wife and I.
We run single micro coils @ 2.5 ohms, 32 ga kanthal, sterile cotton wick. Mine seem to perform best @ 5/64, 3/32, and currently trying 1.5mm (1/16) ID.
Coil placed 2mm above the air hole.
Pulse the coil to verify resistance and no 'Hot Leg' or 'Hot Spots'
Cotton wick installed 'Loosely' through the coil and contacting the base of the deck and not blocking the juice channels.

I've got a couple of kayfun lite plus tanks, and never had the metallic taste... however, when I first got my nano kit, I could NEVER get a decent taste from it, till I started using rayon instead of cotton. With cotton all I could get was a burnt taste; rayon seems to stand up to heat much better than cotton, and is the only kind of wick I can use when I use the nano kit, although I switch back and forth from cotton to rayon when I'm using the full tanks.

Have you tried using a different brand / type of silica? Have you built anything with that silica that tastes OK?

To know for sure you could just ditch the silica and build a coil and wick with cotton.

Process of elimination, could be the wick, the wire or the topper or the liquid. Change each one out and try again until you find the solution. My bet is the silica...

I did try a different drop tip. Used the one that's usually on my Igo-l. Same bad taste. Tried hitting directly from the chimney too, same results.

For how hot, not sure if you mean water or wattage. Tap water I use for soaking gets steaming hot. Wattage, usually 11w.

Tried several liquids that I've been vaping a lot lately. Steam factory kismet, Alice in vapeland's zombie apocalypse, & drake's drakula. All taste great in my protanks & igo.

I have tried cleaning out the airways. Used a syringe full of water quite a few times. Have soaked with all screws removed, including the 510 pin screw.

Not using the wick & wire it shipped with. Using 30 & 32g kanthal with 2mm silica doubled over. Same builds in the igo with the same juices taste great.

I have a ehpro nano kfl (the one that comes with several colored tanks).

I ve had no wierd taste problems whatsoever but I did fully disassemble the atty and cleaned every bit with a toothbrush and dish soap liquid. The only place I did notice machine oil was inside the positive pole screw but I managed to clean it well. Finally I rinsed every bit with isopropyl alcohol (91%)

Anyway... If you are 100% sure that your atty is clean, let me ask you this... How did you wrap the coil and how exactly did you wick it?

Welcome to ECF! I hear good/(more bad than good)bad things about those tanks. I use a simple 5ml PBC tank, in 16 months i have had zero problems.

They are the most popular rebuildable tank atomizers period and a benchmark. I assure you you don't hear more bad things than good.

The ehpro kayfun is one of the best clones out there and while I'm all for authentic, a rba / rta newbie should hold on his money until he's sure of what he really wants. A clone can help to take the first steps in this category without making financial mistakes. Once you mastered your first clone you will have enough knowledge to know exactly what you want and what to expect and you can go for an authentic.

Sorry, haven't had a chance to log in lately.

I did try some variation with my coils. My usual build on my IGO-L is 7 wraps of 30g around doubled over 2mm silica @ 1.8 ohms. Tried that and a couple variations with 7-9 wraps. Tried one with 32g & less wraps. Used a pin for support most of the time, but tried once or twice without. Easier to hold the coil in place with a pin in the middle.

For the wicking, I put the first chimney piece on, cut the wicks just above that (1/8th inch or so), wetted them with juice, and pushed them back in trying to keep them out of the juice channels. I don't think the wicking is the issue though, did a lot of testing just putting the chimney together & using it like an RDA.
