New Rig, having some issues

Hey everyone, first post outside of newbie area. Just picked up a new set up today the nemesis along with a fogger v2. rig looks awesome however when i first fired up the rba it had a major hot spot on one side... so being me i decided i could do it better.... i was wrong... the fogger came with 2 hybrid wicks (silica wrapped steel mesh) and 3, 2inch wires not sure of gauge or anything.. and all i know each coil i made looked amazing and looked fine no metal on metal anywhere and all friggin three snapped on me! really kicking myself now for now buying extra whilst i was at the shop and im more than likely going to go pick more up soon.

Big questions i have are what am i doing wrong to get all three of these to snap? i was using my zmax to see what ohms i was wrapping at and on the last coil (the one that lasted the longest... actually got 2-3 puffs off it before it snapped) was around 1.6-1.7
and what gauge should i start with? ive heard a lot of good things about 30 gauge

next is it better to use silica or the steel mesh? i know many have opinions on this but i kinda feel like silica would work better you could tuck in the excess into the chamber to absorb excess juice.

I appreciate all input on this, and i will go ahead and say that this is my first rba and first mechanical. only other mod ive messed with is the smoktech zmax vv/vw.

First thing you should do is go here, Rebuildable Atomizer Systems , and do a few weeks worth of reading and researching on anything genesis related... The second thing you should do is purchase an actual starter genesis type of rebuildable like an RSST, maybe a kayfun type of atomizer, or a dripper like an Igo-L and shelve the fogger until you get an understanding as to how and why they work... You purchased one of the hardest atty's to start with. I've been vaping for almost 3yrs now and rebuilding for a little over a year and still wouldn't purchase a fogger... They are a nightmare to setup and maintain... Sorry... I feel your pain though. Just saying there are easier paths to start out with in this journey...

well i appreciate the advice everyone, and after i went to the local b&m to get more kanthal wire as well as silica wick the guy there actually helped me out quite a bit and actually set up my tank for me, went with a micro around 10-11 wraps and used cotton. once i told him the issues i was having he immediately ripped into the fogger to see, needless to say the steel mesh wick is what was causing the short to begin with, said my coil was just fine maybe a bit small at only 7-8 wraps but still i regress... guess i shoulda thought of that when setting it up the first time lol anyways i wound up buying 29 gauge coil as well as 3mm silica wicking also got myself an ohm meter so i dont have to use the zmax anymore and waste battery life lol

Lmao the guy at the vape shop actually said the same thing, he couldn't believe the limited amount of room you had for the set up he also suggested i try rebuilding on smaller attys like the extra ones for my kanger tanks just to practice

Did you torch or pulse the SS? That's probably were your shorting.

When i first fired it (with the premade setup) and noticed the hotspot i pulsed it a bit to get the coil to heat even spread a dab of e juice on it thinking that would help. the original setup might have worked fine but being excited i got my first rba i just wanted to tear it apart cause hey its rebuild able lol

DISCLAIMER: I should point out I have only a little experience with a genesis type I-atty so far; It also had silica wrapped in mesh.

Since the fogger is a bottom coil, there really isn't any point in my mind to use the mesh; for a topcoil geny type the mesh makes a rigid vertical rod so you know your wick is going down to the bottom of the tank and not got stuck somewhere under the deck.
But with a bottom coil you just dont need that stiff rod, and getting rid of it gets rid of shorting out problems; I'd go with the silica.

The 2 big problems with mesh are
1: shorting out
2: RUST

come to think of it the mesh in my geny is probably black by now with rust; I stopped using is because I mods don't like it; apparently the mods see the resistance fluctuating WILDLY, while my dmm seems to see it as just a simple 2 ohm resistance; I guess with the dmm the testing voltage is small, but with the mod, the test voltage is probably high and realistic like the working voltage, and causes it to short

thats exactly what i did, well with the help of the guy from the vape store.... but yeah got me some silica for wicking now as well as using cotton for right now ill let ya know which i like better with the cotton so far no dry hits and no flooding. just have to remember the o-ring below the chimney cause it will flood like a mo if thats not there, the guy at the shop snapped mine.... so i wasnt able to vape on it until i got home and repaired it lol

for those wondering heres the actual rig, now that im posting these i guess i should have posted pics of the busted coils and the like, sorry for that folks will think a little more ahead next time, also once this tanks empty Ill go ahead and open it up and take a pic of the coil wick setup and post that later on as well, again thanks for the help with these issues and a GIANT thanks for that link to the RBA systems, so much info.... mind blown

Oh, I'm pretty sure you're gonna like the cotton; especially with a bottom coil tank; not likely the cotton will get dry.

Cotton just tastes great imho; I'm happy with unflavored on a cotton wick lol

Just another update for everyone, i took the advice from the guy at my local shop and I've been practicing rebuilding on my old kanger atty's and well yeah lets just say a micro coil wrapping and top fed ego prime slim hit just as hard now if not harder than my fogger lol. i rebuilt the fogger again today kept having leaking issues (the juice was coming out of the air holes) so i scrapped what that guy wrapped for me and went single 29g micro coil with 11-12 wraps and silica wick, now im at 1.4 ohms and one of the smoothest hitting rigs i have atm. the clouds produced by all my rigs now are about the same, nice and thick. now im thinking about pulling the trigger on a rda with three posts to practice even more. just not sure whats good to start with.... might look into that Igo-L mentioned earlier.

Oh and to let everyone know i rebuilt the atty on my kanger aero tank with a 29g diamond coil/ cotton.... holy hell talk about a beast lol
