I just recently got a Vamo V5 and have been running a ProTank 3 but I purchased a Kayfun Lite this evening. I'm new to the rebuildable tanks. My friends at the vape shop tried to teach me how to build coils and I get the idea but I'm still working on it. I rolled a coil that is reading 3.2 ohms. I have the voltage set at 5 volts and am getting a good vape but it has a really strong throat hit. If I set the voltage down to about 4.2-4.5 volts I get a good taste but not much smoke. Also after hitting it about 5 or 6 times the tank gets really hot. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this? Should I roll a lower ohm coil and run it at lower voltage?

should try a 30 gauge 9 wrap micro coil. I'm using that setup and it came out to 1.8 ohm. Rip Trippers knows his stuff.

Chimney Micro Coil Build In A Kayfun Lite - YouTube

I agree with the 30 gauge 9 wrap micro coil. I build the coil in my Kayfun Lites around a .075 rod (rod cut from a white cloths hanger) and they come out at the same 1.8 or 1.9 ohms. I use organic cotton balls from CVS that I boil twice in DISTILLED water.

your build is probably to high above the air intake causing a harsh throat hit. Just push it down so it's about 1 mm above. Also would recommend going for a 2 ohm build or less. 1.5-2 ohms works really well the Kayfun.

Far as heating issues go, most likely it's because of the amount of wick you have. The more wick and juice in the chamber the more heat is retained causing the entire atomizer to over heat. This could be related to your high ohm build also.

The kayfun can be built many ways and most work quite well. I have tried most of them and my best build for the Kayfun is a dual series vertical mounted micro coil with external wick. I used to use cotton but now using hemp fiber, which I prefer for external wicking.

Try wrapping you build again with half the amount of wraps. Also check out the micro coil build thread for an excellent way of becoming proficient in building. I use micro coils in all my rba's in one form or another. Just so much easier and consistent for me. Also consider picking up some tools of the trade as you go along. A butane torch is a great tool to have for torching wire, setting coils, and oxidizing SS mesh. Also, if you don't already have one, an atomizer ohm meter is great to have. More accurate than the ones on the mods, and provides a great platform for your rba while mounting the build and wicking it. Needle nose pliers and tweezers are good to have also. I also have a selection of blunt nose syringe needles for wrapping micro coils, great for changing up the diameter of the build and holding coil while mounting it.

Good luck, have fun, building is a constant source of joy and frustration. lmao.

Try the lower ohm and lower voltage. As far as heating up, is it the lite or the lite plus? Inadequate airflow tends to lead to things heating up. If its the lite plus, open up the AFC. I use mechanical mods with my kayfuns, but when I was using VV, low ohm low voltage made for a much better vape than high ohm high voltage at the same equivalent wattage.

Im getting about the same (30ga with 9 turns) at a dia. of .090". But I do end up with 2.8 ohms 30ga. 9 turns with .157 dia.

You're right, I should have specified using a 1/16 drill bit or similar (which is .09ft), 30ga 9-10 wraps will be in the 1.6 - 1.8 ballpark.

I'm not sure how you can get 3.2ohms with 9 touching wraps - 30ga. has a resistance of about .7ohms / inch, so that means he's using over 4 1/4 inches of Kanthal which seems an awful lot for a 9 wrap build.

I dunno if this is relevant, but it just struck me as very high for that gauge and number of wraps. Of course I could be missing something...

I just got an hcigar version kayfun 3.1 es clone and was having a lot of problems with dry hits using cotton and 1.2 ohm microcoil 30ga kanthal wrapped around a 5/64 drill bit. Nemesis clone from Fast Tech. Tried everything I could find online to fix this. Nothing seemed to work. Just today, I found the problem. There is an o-ring on the top cap. This is the large one below the mouthpiece o-ring and above the top tank section. I removed the o-ring and no more dry hits, excessive throat hit, burnt taste etc. just massive amounts of vapor and great taste. I did switch to 28ga kantal, 8 wrap microcoil at 1.3 ohms. This thing is a beast now! You might want to try this in addition to all the other great advice on here. These guys are awesome!!
