hi my name is matt and i have been vapeing (sp.?) for about a week now. i'm currently "dealing" with a cig-2o while i anxiously wait for my vpturbo vv to get here. i was sold on e-cigs on my first drag and it only took me about 3 days to convert from analog to electronic cigarets. my question is if anyone else thinks that mods look illegal and if anyone has ever had to explain what there device was to police?

Hiya Matt and congratulations on quitting the analogs and welcome to ECF. I don't think mods look illegal so much as that they're unidentified as being what they actually are. I'm a truck driver that transports hazardous materials and I was stopped one day in Tennessee by a state trooper for a random vehicle inspection. While checking my electronic logs from the display in the cab he noticed my Revolution 2 in the dash tray and inquired about it. I don't know what he thought it was, maybe a radar detector, lol. I explained and demonstrated the use and he was cool with it.

Every LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) I've come into contact with has been aware of the presence of e-cgarettes in societyt have "never seen one that big." I kindly tell them, "That's what she said." :)

I've also had people ask me if I was gonna "pass that."

It's best to educate yourself and arm yourself with info for any inquisition as to your e-cig. I keep a few ECF cards in my wallet as well as the .pdf of the state no-smoking law is downloaded on my phone.

Welcome to ECF. Enjoy your new life!

I use a mod exclusively (Darwin). I have vaped in front of about 40 different police and shrieffs deputies. (job related). I have never had a problem other than some of them wanting to know where they can get a Darwin. Most law enforcement personnel are well aware of vaping. This topic has been discussed about a 100+ times on the forum. Get whatever mod you want and don't worry about it. The worst that you might have to do is explain what it is to a new cop if you got stopped for a traffic violation but that is about it.

Welcome to the forum Matt and congratuations on the decision to stop smoking.

This topic came up frequently in the thread here: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/344698-anyone-else-get-embarrassed.html

The mods that I use out in public could not be mistaken for a real cigarette. Whether they may look "illegal" is really not my concern. My ex-wife is a police officer who is a "closet smoker" and she has seen and even borrowed my ego-sized Volt X2 batteries to try. I've not had any face-to-face issues with an officer questioning me about my mods, but there have been plenty of security people at public events who have obviously seen them and not questioned my usage of them at public events such as outdoor concert events, festivals, or professional sporting events.

My point is mods do not look like a cigarette or even a mini-e-cigarette. I'm don't feel the need to "blend in" with smokers, in fact, I don't wish to be put in that category at all. I am no longer a smoker, I am a vapor. Having said that, I don't do anything to make me stand out in a crowd, either. I just mind my own business, and generally everyone else does, too.

Just because my vaping device may look different or not look like anything else that someone has seen before, why must we assume that it will be mistaken as an illegal device or drug paraphenalia? No one has stared me down when I have been vaping with my mods in public. If they have a problem with it, so what? Should they question me about it, I'll gladly explain that it is an advanced vaporizer that makes water vapor and delivers nicotine. I'll add that because of this device I have been able to quit smoking. I would say the same thing to a police officer should one question me. I carry the little business cards that explain about vaping, and I would hand that to the person questioning me.

I understand the wariness of vaping in public. I was at that point when I started several months ago when I started vaping with the mini-e-cigarettes. I wanted a better device, and have advanced to the APV's that you see below. I quickly lost any shyness about using these in public, because quite frankly, I found that no one really pays much attention.

And really, has anyone seen one of those so-called "illegal looking devices" or drug pharaphanalia devices used in public? I haven't, not sure I would recognize one if I saw one.

The police are people to. Some of us are aware of the presence of ecigs and you'll have a great conversation with us about mods, others won't be aware but will be interested in them and ask simple questions to ensure they aren't anything illegal. We aren't all here to give you a hard time about quitting smoking! I wasn't aware of ecigs a few months ago and can assure you had I stopped a car with a massive mod in it I'd be asking questions as I wouldn't be doing my job otherwise. Sometimes I wish I stopped someone vaping years ago as I would have switched then!

Ive been stopped by a police officer who initially thought I was using an illegal substance. Once I showed him my setup and my juice he waved me on no problem.Police officers are trained to recognize the signs of impairment and thats not just alcohol. If I was using a cig-alike he probably wouldnt have looked my way twice but I can see how a Provari with a Phiniac tank attached could be mistaken for something else.

Staying calm and patiently explaining what youre using is the key here.I tell them I used to be a heavy smoker and the little electronic cigarettes dont cut it for me. I would even offer to let them smell/taste the juice since thats the last thing an illegal drug user would do.

Good luck, enjoy your vv and stay off the analogs

I'm a armed Security Officer for a PD. I get more hassles from my boss than I think is needed. But then I love that man like a brother and would expect nothing less of him. I also carry a conceled handgun license. I'm never without it. If I've done nothing wrong then why worry. Any LEO will tell you to be honest and be up front with the questions he/she ask. Let em bring the dog in and sniff. I've got nothing to hide or be ashamed of. It's for my health not theirs. Just ask I'll be glad to explain. I've actually seen OHP drive by while I was vaping my vmax and saw a couple of them laugh. Dont'worry about it. We are all people and what some don't understand I will take the time to explain. I got into it with a ER doctor once and when I was throuh explaing about it he became more aware of what WE ARE ALL TRYING TO DO.
