After popping the top coil on at least 6 tries, I finally got my dry run to glow evenly on all 4 wraps. Clocked in at .09 ohm with my 28ga kanthal and 400 mesh wick. Got pumped because I know I wanted to be between 08 and 1ohm for my k101 and then realized that I don't have a syringe to fill the tank. There isn't a diy way to fill these things that I'm not thinking of, is there?

Yeah, it's weird. Some pulls taste great while others taste burnt. A lot of popping on the desk too. Probably just pulling too long.

The juice popping is normal, the trick is finding the proper coil tension on the ss. Too tight and get hot spots, burnt juice metal taste. Too loose and get hot burnt juice taste. Its a fine but you'll find it.

from your pic it looks like the wick is wrapped to tight, but first I would remove the fill screw and remember to have the wick on the bottom when puffing, another good thing to do is to put a piece of mesh in the fill hole if you're worried about leaks but should not do that if tilted right hope this helps. Next wick wrap if you have not tried this get a paper clip straiten it when you make the wick put it in the middle of it you should then have a small hole when done in the middle of the wick I also leave it in when I wrap the wire for rigidity.
