Hello all, I am very excited about finding, what I feel, will be the tool necessary to put an end to my cigarette dependency. I have tried the gum, patches, even snus... but always find myself rolling more cigarettes.
I have some concerns that I was hoping you could help me out with. I want to do this right, and I have a feeling that a bad or disappointing starting experience with e-cigs will dampen my hopes. I currently smoke a lot. too much. around 2-3 packs a day or more sometimes. I roll my own, so cost hasn't been a huge factor, but it still adds up; and the health concerns, even at 30, are starting to worry me.

With that said, I have been looking at a few options. I'm thinking of going with the GLV2. As with any PV though, I am worried about how long the carts will last. This led me into looking into a "tank". the fact that they hold so much juice and I can see when they are running low intrigues me. I haven't been able to find much information on the viability of using a "tank" though. I know with the GLV2, I would need a 510 to 510 adapter (extender) to be able to access the button.

Am I on the right track with all of this? Or would someone be so kind to point me in the right direction. Perhaps I am over thinking the whole thing, in which case a simple "shopping list" would be most welcome. I am not afraid to throw some money at it, if I am confident that it will help me stub my last cigarette. Thank you very much for your time!

I don't know much about your choice but I do like the "clear" "(cartomizer is what I use). But with your current cig habit don't be afraid to try the higher nic values. (18-24) You'll probably want to feel it and the higher nic will give you a greater throat hit and hold off the cravings a bit better. HTH

Well with a 5 or 6 volt device you'll need high resistance atomizers or cartomizers, usually their labeled high voltage. Get spare batteries and a spare charger. And last but not least, lots and lots of samples of e-liquid flavors and fun finding what you like. I usually don't recommend a mod for a first PV but the GLV2 is fairly simple and well built so you shouldn't have to many problems. As far as tanks go their only as good as the cartomizer in the middle of them, I'd say check out the ones at NHaler.com and see if anything looks good.

Hey Grey- I don't have any advice about what to get. I will tell you that I got a cheap drug store brand to start with and I was able to (almost completely) stop smoking right away. A few days in I started feeling something was missing, like the e-cigs weren't quite hitting the spot, so I started shopping for a better kit. Even with that nagging feeling that I wasn't quite there yet, I was still able to stay off the analogs. It's been one week now, and my new kit arrived today. I feel confident that I will be able to continue with just the vaping. So, I guess I'm saying don't be afraid to throw some money down for a well regarded kit (within reason, of course) because you may find like I did, that it works pretty well. And if it doesn't, I believe there's a subforum on here somewhere where you can buy/sell/trade, so you might be able to recoup some of your costs if you have a good/in-demand kit and find it doesn't work for you.

Hey Grey. I've spent a fortune on tanks and not found one that works to my satisfaction. The industry is still new - better things coming out all the time. I'm hoping for a tank that doesn't leak, hits hard enough and doesn't mute the flavor.

Imo, starting out with a tank may be inviting problems. The GLVs are excellent mods. I use them personally and have friends and family that love them too. I would suggest you get some standard resistance Boge cartomizers. Simply fill with juice, screw onto your GLV and vape. Your fiddle-factor needs to be low coming off cigarettes. Yes, you'll need to carry a little bottle of juice to top off your cartomizer now and then but it's less trouble than flicking a Bic 30x a day. You can do this! :)

Welcome to ECF GreyRadean:)

Nothing wrong with a Mod that is simple to use right out of the gate...I like the Silver Bullet...just a tube to hold the batts and a button...easy peezy. I don't own a GLV...but I love the design...very classy. You will need an extender if you use a larger tank. You might get all of that over in the classifieds for a good price:)

Hey Grey, I too have done everything to quit in the past, from hypnosis to acupuncture to Zyban. I had a bad reaction to Zyban and it made things so messed up for me that I had to get on meds to deal with it. I've used gums, patches, lotions, lozenges etc and realised that the one thing I had missed the most was the throat hit. This was several years ago and I didn't know about e-cigs. Needless to say, I failed miserably.

I will eventually quit again- I'm in the final stretch now, making the transition from analogs to e-cigs and I'm doing extremely well. Plus, having been turned on to this forum, I feel I have a support group. I used to smoke 30 cigs a day, and now I'm down to 6. I'm cutting back on the analogs bit by bit- and I'm nearly ready to make the big plunge and believe it or not, I'm not freaked out about it. I try to vape when the urge hits me, and it takes care of the urges. Of course it is a different sort of sensation from smoking to vaping, but now that I'm used to it I find that I'm enjoying it. I no longer have to worry about where I go or if a hotel has smoking rooms, etc.

It seems expensive to start up- but if you figure in the cost of a packet of cigarettes these days, in the long run it saves you money. Plus, there's no mess of butts or ash to contend with.

I wish you the best of luck!

Hiya GreyRadean and welcome to the ECF! Everybody's given great advise here. One more thing to help you get past your concerns is that the e-cig has the physical dependency of the hand to mouth oral fixation taken care of. This may be what you were lacking with the other methods. It truly is a habit that is overlooked quite often with the 'other' nic replacements. Good luck to you; I think you're gonna do just fine. You've picked a great mod to start with!

I know nothing about GLV2 but see this
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...lv2-atty-compatibility-consistent-output.html

The most popular cartos for 510 threading are Boge. They are standard stuffing type cartos.

And some people like the dual coil cartos (by Smoketech I thnk)

And some like the clearomizers but the old CE2 ones fell apart and needed a lot of tinkering even when they didn't. These are reservoir cartos that require a blunt syringe to fill. The new version C3 claims uncrackable tube and no leaks. An early version is available at GotVapes.com (they called them Dleuxe Fluxomizers)

There are other more exotic large tank cartos and accessory juice feeders you can see mixed in with the mods here
Juice Feeder / Tank | e-Cigarette Mods by Specs

I just use Boge cartos.

Agreed. Plus, no calories ;-) I used to try candy like suckers, but my blood sugar went up the roof, LOL. I know that one of the reasons I failed in the past was in missing (or getting over) the physical dependence- the throat hit especially. Even with patches where my body is getting infused with nicotine, it drove me nutters because I wanted to get that "smoking" sensation. Of course e-cigs are a bit different experience from an analog, but it sure does take care of that particular issue.

I never wanted to quit (or tried to), I did however buy 2 kits for me and my husband because HE wanted to quit and had tried several times, and because he had such a bad cough, I worried for his health. It's now 4 months later and he's still smoking, but I haven't had a cigarette since the day I started vaping, and I smoked a LOT. Everyone is different, but I just wanted you to know that it's possible for a heavy smoker to transition to vaping fairly easily, but with effort and determination. Good luck! Where there's a will, there's a way.

GreyRadean, that GLV2 looks like a very good unit. I would probably recommend a boge 3 ohm cartomizer with a drip tip in place of the rubber cap for easy access. Just fill it occasionally from a bottle as you vape. I think that would be the least hassle.
For less work than that I would recommend some bottom feeding box mod. I think RIOs are at the top of the line presently. I'm not sure what the chances of leakage are. I think they are small.

Boodle speaks truth, Gray, about tanks. They're a technology whose time has not yet come, especially for new vapers. The GLV2 mods are highly thought of -- I don't have one but have been thinking my Reo Grande would like some company.

Wow. thank you for all the comments, I would like to respond to each one individually, but by the time I refreshed the page, there were 8 more!

I guess I will wait on the tank for now... maybe familiarize myself with the whole thing before diving into that arena. I have some more research to do before pulling the trigger, but should hopefully hone in on something this week. I am currently watching the "Dr. Vapor E-Cig 101" videos and that has helped a lot.
It's funny, in all of the "how-to" and review videos I have been watching, I could never find one where the person actually SHOWS the filling, or dripping. That was the greatest mystery to me; Especially after seeing some pretty interesting syringe tools

On a similar note... how long does a "refill" last? either after just refilling a carto, or dripping 3 drops on an atty. Will I need to carry a bottle with me if I go out even with a freshly filled carto? I guess what I am really getting at is if a battery lasts, say, 7 hours... how many "top-offs" will I need to do in that amount of time. The best info I have found so far is simply "keep it wet".

I hope that makes sense. I feel I am finally understanding this and will be ready to make an informed purchase very soon.

Thanks again!
Grey

Hey there!
I'm new to this forum but not new to vaping. I quit smoking immediately in Oct.2009 and started vaping. I had tried all kinds of e-cigs and was pretty disappointed in the outcome. However, I kept vaping until Oct.2010. I went through a rough patch in my life and turned back to analogs. Well, I decided 2 weeks ago to get back on the wagon with vaping. I was tired of spending the $$$ on analogs, tired of the smell, the hassle, etc. I bought an Ego-Tank and I really love it. I just refill my tank with juice and I'm good to go. I bought the longer-lasting batteries and I can go for days without a charge.

Good luck in whatever e-cig you choose. You can do this!!! :)

Not to add more complication to your life, especially since I'm a new guy looking at Ecigs so have no experience, but there is also the gogo pro to consider from easycig. I've been reading reviews here and on youtube for the last couple of days of different things and that gogo pro apparently holds tons of liquid (3 ml - which is apparently a lot) and has a gigantor battery (1300 mah - again, apparently a lot).

The things I've read/watched on that one tend to imply you can go all day without refilling. So maybe that's good for a heavy smoker?

The downside being weirdo sizes that only work with gogo stuff.

just a thought...

Grey,
I couldn't stand to constantly 'drip' e-liquid into a cartridge. That's why I got the tank. I fill it up about 3/4's of the way full and that will last me about 1/2 day of vaping. I vape a lot now because I just came off analogs 2 weeks ago. I carry my e-cig everywhere. I purchased a small carrying case that can hold my bottle of e-liquid, filled tanks, spare batteries and more. The case is about the size of a sunglass case.
