Hey everyone I am new, both to vaping and this forum, and am in need of some advice. I'm currently using an iStick Pico 50W max device with a kangertech subtank mini. I have several different coils ranging from .5 to 1.5 ohms. My issue is that I'm never sure how high to set the wattage to on my device. It seems no matter how high or low I set it, it is either too harsh and I cough or it's too weak and I get no smoke. I've only been vaping a few weeks but still haven't been able to get it right. Currently using a 9 mg 70 VG juice. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi!
Firstly, there's no smoke in vapor. It's just vapor. (Small detail but important to the cause...)
Also (wow, I'm sorry) you can't use a Pico with a Subox, as those two things are both mods.
You are using a Subtank (mini Subtank 'tank') ON a Pico mod.

The good news is it's a combination we know and like well enough. I do build atomizers but use plug and play for work, so know I these coils (the replacement atomizer heads)

For me, the 1.5ohm coils are quite weak for such a large tank. These are not designed for high power vaping. They will work best at quite low power (8-15?) watts with the airflow on the subtank mini closed down to one tiny hole (or the minimum airflow).
The 0.5ohm coils are better suited to opening up the airflow and using them at medium power (15-30?) watts.

The problems will be matching the coil/watts/power (recommended rating) to your inhaling style.
If you get the combination out, you will wonder what on earth you are doing wrong. :)

I would personally do one of these.

1. Use the 1.5ohm coil at 12-14 watts, set the airflow to minimum and inhale into my mouth first (MTL, mouth to lung)

or

2. Use the 0.5 coil at 16-24 watts (maybe starting even lower just to get it going) with the airflow open and inhale to the lungs direct.

The exact numbers come down to personal preference and the top power of the coil might be not as high as the manufacturers say... there are SO many different versions of Subtank coil. I like the SSOCC version. The originals were square and called OCC... not so good i.m.o. and worth avoiding if some shops are trying to pass them onto new vapers.

Thanks very much will definitely try that out. As far as the coil type I have im not sure whether it's the SSOCC or OCC version if you look at my profile picture they are in there (not sure if you can enlarge photo enough to tell). Also, thanks for the correction on the tank name I'll edit the OP.

Good man!
I'm sure they will be SSOCC coils. I only mention this as UK shops like to sell the old OCC ones for too much money.
This is the sort I buy, when I buy them. I mostly use the RBA.
Kanger SSOCC Coils *SALE* $8.50

Yeah, if the coils are square they are the old style.
Many shops will try to move their older stock/dead stock off onto new vapers if they don't know better. It's the same with anything really.

Many of us learned it is better to research what we're interested in before dropping coin and buying anything. The OCC coils, even though they are not the newest version, are still damn good compared to what was previously available.
Cheers.

When I started 7 weeks ago vaping I researched for a good store with positive feed back on the internet. Once I chose a store I went in and made it clear to the sales person that approached me that I needed a lesson on the whole vaping thing. They sat with me over an hour showed me mods, tanks, coil's of all brands sizes and styles. I ended up with a 213 watt mod with a tvf8 Smok cloud beast tank, two batteries and a charger with several free 30 ml juices. That being said if a store is truly about the customer and not ripping them off you will be set up with a system that should be the only unit you will ever need. Kind of once and done. I highly recommend you look for this type of store. The guys I dealt with hooked me up knowing I wasn't even sure I would like it. They are the reason I am vaping because they took the time to educate me.

I actually did that same thing at my local shop. Guy had good reviews and spent a good 30 minutes explaining stuff. Maybe he's just not up to date on coil knowledge. Thanks for the info guys

Did you Prime tge coil head with Ejuice?

The .5 ohm coil head is for direct lung vaping
Tge 1.5 ohm head is for Mouth to Lung vaping.

OK, so there are 2 main types of vapers. #1. Those who like more of a cigarette style, low power, tight airflow, MTL (mouth to lung) style. And #2. Those who crank up the power. wide open airflow, STL (straight to lung) style.

While the subtank mini is a very popular tank, it is not the best tank for MTL style. If you are a #1 style, you can use the 1.2 or 1.5 ohm coil, turn down the airflow and replace that drip tip with a more narrow one and get by with 8-10 watts...but it won't be the best.

Yes I'm definitely the first style you described. Any suggestions for a better tank more suited to that style (MTL)?

Forgive my intrusion but I am still totally impressed with the GS Air M tank.
I used the GS tank for ages but somehow this is better! It's not as tight as some tanks (Innokin Endura) but I actually rate it for MTL. Inexpensive too. Coils are solid reliable.

Is this one sturdy? I'm pretty rough on my vape equipment. $10 seems like it may be "cheaply made"

I'm not too worried about the cost (preferably under $50) I'm more interested in a good consistent performance and one that's less prone to leaking
Well, in honesty I wouldn't advise anything that performed bad or leaked. That's like the ultimate in bad form. That's what those nasty brands do; make out something is good just to sell it to you. Money doesn't always guarantee quality.
