New tool for cutting silica or cotton wick

Been using nail clippers (flat and rounded blades) to cut my wicks to size. The problem is that I could never get a perfect straight cut.

Was at the pet store and seen cat claw clippers that had a round blade. Bought one and it cuts silica and cotton perfectly straight.

These cat claw clippers work perfectly to give me a straight cut on wicking materials.

Nice to know. When I was using silica I always heated it with a lighter before I cut it. Seemed to prevent some of the fraying.

Cuticle scissors from a manicure set also work well, since they're small and very sharp.

I don't make many Wicks Anymore.

But when I did, I found if you Wet the Wick where you want to Cut it, that it was Easier to get a Clean Cut.

That was going to be my suggestion, Celar. Actually, I've no idea what you are supposed to do with cuticle scissors, but they look like they would be great for the job.

Brilliant. My cat Paddington (big yellow tomcat) is afraid of these things...runs and hides. He often "helps" me while coil building by pawing at my wick and wires. I may or may not use them to cut wicks, but I can at least lay them next to me on the table. Sure beats the squirt bottle of water that I'm using now.

Thanks for the link. I can kill two birds with one stone. I need scissors for my Aquarium plants and for wicking. Looks like these will do both jobs. A separate pair for each of course!!!

Cuticle scissors are small and curved at the end. They work good for clipping wires close to coil heads. I just bought professional ones thinking they would be better however my revlon and no name brand work better.

I use cuticle scissors too, just since they are small, sharp and I already had them.
I like to cut my cotton wicks at an angle so that they taper down at the end, I saw someone suggest this somewhere saying it works better, not sure if its true but it works fine enough for me

My wife is a cross-stitcher and she has about 1000 pairs of little scissors so I stole a pair from her. They are very high quality scissors, about 3" long, with super-sharp blades. Work perfectly.

I use these, 1.25 at the dollar store. They cut straight and can use them on other stuff around the house

i have something similar but my wicks tend to drift away from the blades.. having something like a cigar snipper that can 'hook' in and surround the wick should really help with that.
