Hi folks - New member Dave from CT here. I just received my first ecig kit in the mail, a starter kit of eGo-T.

I smoke a pipe and inhale. The tobacco is flavored and there is no filter. Yet I can't inhale this vapor without coughing my brains out, even the lightest hit. I don't understand it.

The vendor was very helpful on my first order, and hooked me up with 3 juices to try (assorted tobaccos with vanilla or something) and all of them give me the same reaction. I just can't inhale them. The hardware wasn't cheap, I hope I can figure this out.

Are some juices milder and easier to take in than others? Is this a common complaint?

Thanks

I have the same problem. What makes it worse for me is 100% Vegetable Glycerin (VG) Juices, for some people its the Propylene Glycol(PG) , But what I also noticed was the way I vaped, I tried like I do regular cigarettes, and I found out that is the wrong way. What finally helped me was to puff puff and pull into my mouth and not down into my lungs and either exhale through mouth again or let flow out of nose. To get the nicotine into your system you don't have to pull into lungs because its vapor and it can do that in the mouth I believe.

For the first couple of days I had a similar problem. The thing is, this is a new compound you're drawing into your lungs, they're not accustomed to it yet. I smoked roll you own American spirits, pretty much the strongest smoke I could get and I still had some negative reactions at first. I've been vaping for ten days with out any smoking and I now find it more satisfying than smokes ever were. The trick for me was to just take it slow, get a good mouthful but not inhale it all the way, and not to draw it in as deeply as I would with smoke at first. Jeep a glass of water or juice at hand and drink between puffs.
I hope some of this helps, this really seems to be a great alternative to smoking. Hope it works out for you.

This is a quite common reaction with new vapors. It will soon pass.

It took your body time to get used to tobacco smoke, in case you don't remember. It will also take your body time to get used to vapor.

It's important to know that the nicotine in vapor is a different sized molecule than what is in smoke, and is absorbed by a different part of our body. Nicotine in vapor is absorbed by the mouth, throat, and nasal airway. Therefore, you can still get the nicotine that you need by not inhaling into your lungs. Gradually over time allow yourself to inhale more and more of the vapor and your body will adjust to the change of smoke to vapor.

Vaping technique, therefore, is different than smoking. Imagine you are sucking on a straw in a milkshake. Take slow, gentle, patient draws into your mouth and hold it there for a second or two. Then either inhale into your lungs, or just exhale from your mouth and nose.

We also know that years of smoking has damaged our taste buds. Your sense of taste will change over time once you have quit smoking. Many e-liquid flavors may seem muted or "off". By exhaling some vapor through your nose you will actually be allowing your sense of smell assist you to "taste" flavors. You might recall how when you have a terrible head cold and can't smell, and that food often tastes bland or flavorless. This shows how the taste of smell assists us in recognizing flavors.

The resistance rating (temperature the heating coil burns) of the juice delivery device you are using can determine if you receive a warmer or cooler vapor. The lower the resistance (1.5 ohm to 2.0 ohm) will cause a warmer vapor. Higher or standard resistance (2.1 ohm to 3.0 ohm) will give a cooler smoother vapor.

The higher the nicotine strength in a juice, the more "throat hit" you will experience. To a lesser degree, more PG than VG in e-liquid also gives more throat hit.

I would also recommend getting to a Vaping Store in your area that allows samples and has custom VG/PG mixes, this was a Godsend for me, they found I did well on 33PG/70VG, The PG makes me cough but the VG overwhelms my mouth and dulls my senses, this combo worked for me, also you may be at too high of a nicotine too. Try to find a store near you that will help you find what you can enjoy!

Vaping is a learned experience, just like smoking was. Remember way back when.........Cough/Choke take another drag?
Slow light inhales into the mouth, Shorter at first until you start to find your rhythm. You can inhale, I do, but it takes learning how.

I draw in 3-4 seconds, then slowly inhale. Out through nose for nice flavors for best sensation.

I vape 24mg juice and there are still (after three years) juices that irritate my throat and make me cough. As an experiment you might try 80/20 pg/vg, 50/50, and 30/70 pg/vg just to see how you react.

Some flavors at the same 24mg strength are bland and others are harsh using the same pg/vg mix. It may also be flavorings that are in some that aren't in others that make the difference.

I think sample packs are a good way to try multiple juices without spending a lot of money. Halo sells a sample tobacco pack that contain six 6ml bottles of tobacco flavors for $24.95. If you like tobacco flavors you will probably like 3 or 4 out of the 6. Torqu56 and Prime15 are two of the best in that pack, IMO. Sample packs are a good way to find your favorite without forking over 2 to 3 times that money for 10ml bottles. Many juice vendors realize that and offer sample packs.

my friend kindda have the same reaction on her first vape. 2nd and 3rd vape she coughing her lungs out. i thought maybe it's because of the pg. she keep saying maybe the nicotine is too high for her. i tried to give her zero nicotine liquid to try on. then she vaped and said that was smooth! then she keep on vaping and vaping, we tried to top up the nic strength as she goes. turns out she can't go above 10mg before starting to cough again. she's now stick to 10mg.

OK, thanks folks I've learned a lot here already. The ejuice I have is 18 mg which the vendor says is appropriate for a 1/2 pack a day smoker (my estimate with the pipe).

I've tried not inhaling and just keeping the smoke in my mouth and out through the nose. No coughing, IF I don't catch a bit of it on the way out. That could actually be a good thing, to not have crap in my lungs anymore. But I'm not getting the satisfaction (feeding the need) and find myself regressing to the pipe again. Part of that may be that I have dentures and a good part of my mouth is covered with plastic inside. (Sux to be old).

You guys refer to pg / vg - what differences to they make, and can you choose them or are they fixed by the brand or whatever?

Thanks again.

inhale slowly with your lips, not your lungs. i apologize if that sounds creepy, but i couldn't figure out a more accurate way to word it.

I understand that part. Holding the vapor in my mouth for a few seconds then exhaling through my nose seems to be working. It's just that inhaling even the slightest amount of it makes me cough badly. I know peeps inhale the ecig, I'm trying to figure out what I have to change.

Thanks guys.
