Hello everyone, I have just recently started vaping and I started with a small mouth to throat style mod w/ 50/50 salt nic 50mg which would replicate smoking a normal cig. I believe the high level of nic was making me sick, but at the end of the day I never really felt satisfied. So I went up to my local vape shop and purchased a Vapresso Cascade One, w/ 80/20 3mg juice. This mod gave me a much bigger vape hit and I fell in love with vaping! Now onto the point of this thread; since I moved to the bigger mod & different juice I have had 2 debilitating gout flare ups in my feet. In my research I have read many people stating it is because vaping dehydrates a person. I drink 64-90oz of water daily because I have been living with gout for 10 years, so I know the ins and outs of purines & foods and drinks causing high uric acid levels. I have also read that PG elevates lactic acid levels which could also cause raised uric acid levels causing gout. So I moved to 100% VG from a supplier called Vape Kitchen. I do not know if vaping is causing my gout or just irritating my new diagnosis I received yesterday from my DR that I have Rheumatoid Arthritis on top of gout. I just wanted to throw this out there for any other fellow vapers that might be having some difficulty. Also if anyone has any newer information to help me that would be great as well. The last threads I see about gout and vaping is back from 2010; so maybe some new information is floating around. Thanks!

Hi and welcome,
How long did you smoke and how many per day?

If you are taking medication and just stopped smoking, you may need to consult with your PCP to determine if your dose/prescription may need to be modified.

I'm sure your doctor is thrilled that you stopped smoking and he should be able to monitor and perhaps adjust your medications now that your body is detoxifying.

TL;DR: Consult with your doctor for answers to medical and drug interaction questions.

Welcome to ECF.

I'm a retired physician assistant and RN. I've been vaping since around 2012, and try to keep up with the most recent studies concerning e-cigarette use.

I'm not aware of any relationship between gout or rheumatoid arthritis and vaping.

Thank you for the response, helps me with the process of elimination. Trust me I do not want it to the vape...

In General lower ohm coils/higher wattage vaping:
More Expensive
Heat The Coil Faster
Produce More Vapor, can mute taste (coat mouth/build up)
Drain The Battery Faster/shorten life
Use E-Juice Faster <----------------------------------------------------------*
Produce A Warmer Tasting Vape
Shorten Coil Life
Shorten Wick Life
May Produce more Dry Hits
Uses more liquid
May be less healthier - higher temps. <-------------------------------------*
May Produce Spit Back
More PV Maintenance/Issues
More irritation to non vapers (tends create more negative comments regarding cloud production)
More exposure to carcinogens at high temps <-----------------------------*
I'm PG sensitive and RDA vape at high ohms and low watts (zero nic, single coil (~6.0w/32ga KA1;4 turns;.13" ID max VG;For flavor only with moderate clouds.Rayon wick). I vape 100% VG most of the time. Will at times add one or two drops of DIY high VG e liquid to vary the taste.
* might be a cause of your problem(s).

Welcome I am not aware of any such relationship, I'm afraid.

What the process of detoxification from smoking might be like I have no idea.

Could cigarettes have been keeping your RA in check or did vaping cause it, I have no idea.

I think you are going to have to keep working with your docs on this one. Sorry.

Could try other forms of nicotine replacement for a bit, that would tell you if it was vape related I guess?

Good luck and welcome I hope things work out.

Hello - Wow - that is the first time I ever heard of that link. I looked around, though and I do see others talk about a possible link. Dehydration seems to be the culprit. Here are some links you may find interesting;
