NewB Help Please!

So I am new to the whole PV thing. I am a social smoker who tried a friends PV and took a liking to it. She had a LUX from Modern Vapor. I have been tirelessly researching this Forum for 3 days nearly non stop reading about all the different types and their ups and downs. I know I will get many peoples differing opinions on my questions but that is what I want to help me figure out what to buy. I want to do it right the first time and not end up owning 10 units, but it already seems very addicting and fun with such a fast growing industry that I am sure I will anyways.

My first question is why is there not much written on this forum about the LUX? Being the only one I have used I was dead set on this unit until I found this HUGE Forum.

Second, for a social smoker is a box mod the right thing for me?

Third, being a social smoker I am wondering if I should be steering away from the big TH many heavy smokers are keen to. Will the box mods all give me this? IYO will it be too much?

You should probably also know that after researching this that my ULTIMATE goal has become making my own Mod. I am an entrepeneur at heart and I have access to a machine shop with multiple CNC machines including a four axis lathe. Hopefully I will be writing posts asking for some of your new, undeveloped ideas once I get the hang of this and completely understand it.

I am sure I will have more questions to come and I TRULY appreciate all your help and feedback.

I don't know the LUX that you mention. I can say that if you're a "social" smoker, a box mod might be overkill. Since you've already tried a PV (the LUX), and you're not "set" on a cigarette lookalike, the Ego or Riva would be a good place for you to start, then branch out from there. Those are 510 threaded, so are compatible with most of the new stuff out there that you'll eventually want to try.

Search through the Forum Suppliers for a good price, you'll probably want a "kit" to start, since it will give you a couple of batteries, a couple of atomizers (attys), some cartridges (either prefilled or empty). You'll also want some juice, at least 30ml to start (usually 18mg to 24mg of nicotine is a good starting point to try). You can try some cartomizers (cartos) too (they're just attys and cartridges combined).

Since you mention boxmods I'll comment on mods in general. They have the option of longer runtimes between charges since they generally use larger capacity batteries. They also usually have a higher starting voltage than commercial PV's. The batteries, switches, and wiring are also capable of driving low resistance atomizers without a problem. This makes them much more adaptable to suit the individual tastes of the user. If you want a strong throat hit, put a 1.5 ohm atomizer on it. If you want to tame it down a bit stick a 2.0 ohm on there. Just want to blow vape?, go a bit higher.

You can achieve the same effect by changing voltage. Just get a variable voltage mod and dial it in wherever you want. Some are quite reasonable. Here's links to some Madvapes stuff since mods and modding interest you.

I've got quite a few boxmods from Madvapes and they perform really well. Mods are basically battery holders with a switch and an atomizer connection in their simplest form. But boxmods aren't quite as durable as an aluminum tube mod so don't drop it. You can't complain about the price though and you can buy 5 boxmod kits for the price of one of the cheapest tube mods.

If modding interests you, I'd suggest you buy a kit or 2, 2 sets of batteries, a couple of atty's, and a charger. Build the kit, it only takes an hour or so (1/2 an hour if you leave out the silly LED and resistor since you don't need them anyway), and you're in business. You'll find out how simple this stuff really is.

As far as whether mods are the way for a newbie to start, it's all in what you want. For a social smoker who won't be using their rig much you could probably get away with a standard 510 or KR808 and be content. But if you're lready thinking of modding I'd suggest you skip that step and save yourself about $50. A basic boxmod setup can be had for about the same price and it'll be much more adaptable, and perform much better in the long run.

For a social smoker, I'd follow cskent and suggest a 510 or KR808D-1.

I don't have much of a comment on modding as I'm still playing with my first one (Roughstack).

That being said, this is where I'd diverge from CS and say you go with those starter kits. Then move onto a mod. I suggest this because you'll figure out what works for you and what doesn't. Then you'd have a base for your future designs.

A 3.7v box mod will not have too much hit. One slim model (KR808D-1/Vapor4Life) is also 3.7v. With 3.7 volts and standard resistance attys or cartos the hit will mostly be from what nicotine you choose.

Apparently the LUX is a re-branded JSB Diamond VGO. It looks like a good system, comparable to the Echo or Go Go. The threads are 510-compatible.

I haven't tried any mods yet, but you might want to look at the variable volt Provari.

I've got several, check my sig line. Favorite is the Silver Bullet from Altsmoke. You won't find a better built 3.7v tube mod in my opinion.

cskent, since I can't figure out how to PM you I have to ask why you prefer the SB over your Omega? It is narrowed down between these two devices for me. Since I am a social smoker will there be any issues between the two for me? I have fairly large hands, would this be a downfall with either device? I have watched and read many reviews and it seems people who owned a SB before Omega prefer the SB still and somewhat Vise Versa. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The SB is slightly larger and heavier. It also has a side mounted button. The Omega is an all mechanical mod where you push down on the head section to activate it. I simply prefer the button on the SB, the Omega is a good mod too but it's not my preference. I carry my rig in my pants pocket and I'm pretty sure the Omega would fire accidentally now and then. The button on the SB is recessed enough so I don't have to worry about it when I carry it.
