I started with diy. I didn't have much confidence in being able to quit smoking so I needed to keep the cost down. Never tried a recipe. I've found I don't like sweet of fruity flavors. I have a couple dozen flavors but only use 3.
I do like having complete control over my nic amount and PG/VG ratio. I usually vape 70% PG but I have a mix of the same flavor in 70%VG and when I feel like having a little more vapor for a change, I add a little of it when I fill my tank. Hope to win my wife and a friend over to vaping, so my collection of flavors might come in handy someday.
I also like being able to make small adjustments to the flavor of my ADV just for something different. Having fresh clear liquids is a big plus too.
Been thinking about giving some fruity flavors a try again after info I've read here about "airing out" to mellow perfume tastes.

I use both in DIY. Single mixes, of course, are fairly easy, particularly if you have a starting guide like this one:

Single ingredient mixes also require far less steep time, maybe a day or two only. I have found two or three ingredient mixes may take 4 or 5 days, and some very complex recipes may take several weeks. I have two recipes that I DIY that take a 5 week steep time. I am looking into ultrasonic cleaners to speed up steep times, and probably a Christmas present this year for me. After a lot of research, I'm close to pulling the trigger on one of these.

Good luck in DIY. Must admit I was terrible the first six months with only two juices I liked out of about 150 attempts. In the last six months, I have about 20 juices that I like now out of several hundred. Just took me a long time to get it down. A little of this, a lot of that, etc.

I have found that I only get the perfumy taste when I add too much flavor to the mix. When I have backed the flavoring percentage down a bit, I've lost that chemical perfumery taste that we all hate. Best to you!
