So Cal
I'm sure this has been discussed 500 times here. I need posts and info though so maybe we can discuss it again lol. I am not looking to get into is vaping healthy or not type of debate. What I want to discuss is, how to make the most healthy combo to vape.

PG vs VG... pros and cons.. is one really better then the other?

Also, I have heard there are some nicotine alternatives out there, since nicotine in liquid form can be quite toxic if say swallowed etc. Are there juices that satisfy like nicotine but dont have nicotine for example RY4 etc etc?

Can someone fill in the bits and pieces I have heard floating around??

thanks!!

Hey puffahauntis, welcome to ECF!

Both PG and VG are quite safe, and used in all kinds of things you consume or use every day.

As far as risks...

With PG, some people do have allergic reactions. I've never read of these being very severe, though. If you get a rash, or itchy skin, or something like that, it indicates you may be allergic to PG.

Also, PG can be somewhat drying, so it's good to make sure you're drinking lots of fluids while you vape.

PG gives better throat hit and more flavor, but not as much vapor.

As far as VG, I have never heard of anyone having an adverse reaction from it. At very high temperatures, it can convert into a toxic substance. But the heat required to do that is much higher than a PV will reach. People have tested it even on high-volt mods, and it still doesn't get hot enough.

VG can have kind of the reverse effect of PG, and make your throat get a bit phlegm-y. Not everyone gets this - I don't. But for those who do, switching to PG-only juice, or using lower amounts of VG in a mix can help or solve the problem.

VG has less throat hit and less flavor, but a lot more vapor.

I personally use a mix, about 30% VG. High enough for awesome vapor production, low enough not to wipe out the flavor for me.

You can buy no-nic juices, but it pretty much kills the throat hit. People have helped this by adding a couple drops of vodka to juice, or using very strong flavors. Using it on a high-volt mod may also help.

But juice with nic in vape-able concentrations are not that dangerous. Yes, if you drank it, you may get sick. But getting a bit in your mouth, on your hands, etc, is not going to hurt you. Most bottles come with some sort of "child safety" cap, but if you have pets or kids, you should just keep it somewhere they can't get to it.

awesome post, thanks so much! That really clears a lot up. The one other question is then, is there an e-liquid on the market that uses something other then nicotine to provide the same effect as nicotine? Do you have any info on the RY e-liquids? I heard but it may be totally false they are not nicotine based?

Not as far as I'm aware. I know there are people working on e-juice that helps compensate for some of the other addictive substances in tobacco, but it's not for sale as far as I know.

Most of the RY e liquid that is for sale does have nicotine in it. If you are wanting to be able to vape without nicotine I would suggest what many of my friends are doing which is tapering down. Start where you are and on your next batch or purchase use a lower amount of nicotine and continue this until you are vaping liquid without nicotine. This is easier to do if you make your own liquid because you can taper down in finer incriments. For instance you do not have to go from 24mg to 18mg. In theory you could go 24,23,22,21,20,19,18 etc... I would probably do something inbetween such as 24 to 22 or even 20 and see if it is still satisfying. If it is then use that for a bit and try another decrease when you think you are ready for it. If it isn't then go back up to your previous step for a bit. Myself I use some liquid with nicotine and some without. I notice that some flavors give a good throat hit even without nicotine (menthol, coffee, cinnamon etc..) and some flavors have no throat hit unless there is nicotine. Sadly more flavors need nicotine to have much throat hit than those that do not.

Another factor to consider is that nicotine by its self is not that dangerous. Sure if you had pure nicotine it could really mess you up but with the diluted forms the worst that may happen is that you may get a little sick to your stomach for a little bit. I use what a lot of people think is a foolish strength more my liquid (150mg). I have spilled a drop on my skin and suffered no ill effects. The nice thing about that strength is that I only need drops to measure and do not have to remove any lids to work with it. There are benefits to using nicotine including that it is an antidepressant.

If you do not make your own liquid you could buy some nicotine liquid and use that to alter your taper down by dropping down to the next nicotine level and add some to raise it up to somewhere inbetween where you were and where you are going.

RY4 is just a "flavor" and all eliquids have nicotine unless you order some with no nicotine. But if you want to fully transition to vaping and not smoke, you will be the rare exception to be able to do that with eliquid that has no nicotine in it. I agree with the suggestion to wean yourself off nicotine over a long period of time if that is important to you.

The most common nicotine level vaped is 24mg. The lower the nicotine level becomes, the lower the throat hit (inhaled feel of a cigarette) becomes. I would start out with some 24, 18 and 12 of the same flavor and then if you want to reduce the level over time, you can mix it to a lower strength and try it out.

BTW, one of the best RY4's is Janty's classic RY4.

Wow, I never thought of using a couple of drops of vodka to my juice!!! Have to try this! Thanks MistressNomad

Nicotine is TH
Heat can enhance TH (KR808D-1 and the less supported KR808D-2 are the hottest slim ecigs. To go hotter you need to skip slim ecigs)

PG is thin, lets through the most flavor and the most of nicotine's TH and irritation. PG make thin visible vapor
VG is thick, dulls/smooths everything PG lets through, make thicker more persistent vapor

0-nic juices can have throat sensations with fake TH additives like QHit, spices like cinnamon and ginger, pepper flavored juice, mints and menthols

Re what PG/VG to get...
Carts + atty - whatever you want but the sluggishness of high VG can causing burning tastes to happen more often
Dripping - ditto
Cartomizers - 30% or less VG works best in most cartomizers and 20% or less is better IMO
Tanks - generally like 20-30% VG though you may be able to use 50/50
