e-liquid question

Hi everyone,

Today is my 10th day off the stinkies and vaping... After a rocky start all is going great now and I'm starting to get used to vaping. No longer seem to have a dry throat, can breath better and overall feeling fantastic :)

Got a question about Nicotine - How poisonous is the e-liquid? What would happen if I accidentally swallowed some due a busted clearomiser? or spilled some on a kitchen worktop/table and my girlfriend accidentally got a small amount on her food or skin etc?

Am being a bit OCD just now, and was wondering if I can relax a little when handling the e-liquid?

Congrats on 10 days!!!

I personally wash my hands after filling or after dripping and I clean up any spills instantly. I have pets and I wouldnt want to find out what happens should they ingest it. A few drops in the mouth from a crappy clearo certainly doesnt end the world (but it tastes horrid!). Just wash your hands and clean up any spills right away- it becomes a non issue :)

Nicotine is a very toxic and dangerous substance. This is not meant to alarm you, only to emphasize how dangerous in certain quantities it can be. However, if you get a drop of e-juice in you due to a loose connection on your PV or a bad atomizer, don't sweat it....it happens to everyone. Me personally, I've gotton a stomach ache and headache due to too much nic. Nic is also absorbed through the skin also (....nicotine patch). If some touches the skin, just wash it off. Keep your juice out of the reach of children, animals, common sense stuff. If I'm being to much of an alarmist maybe someone else on the forum can reel me in. Just better to be safe than sorry.

yeah I knew that nicotine is extremely poisonous in its purest form - but I think caffeine is also the same? (correct me if am wrong) I'm currently washing my hands and worktops where am handling it, but you can't always be sure you've cleaned up properly and I guess I just want to relax a little knowing that a few drops aren't going to kill me lol

ps thanks for the replies!

Not to deemphasize causation and care, but here's a blog article about several suicide attempts from drinking nicotine liquid. The most extreme case, ingestion of 1500 mg of nicotine, led to abdominal cramping and vomiting. Otherwise the patient was (physically) okay. This all ties into the idea that nicotine is not nearly as toxic as we previously believed, and I think the blog I posted lists and discusses some references for that as well.

I think susceptibility to nicotine overdose depends, in large part, on how habituated your body is to nicotine, but I think it's highly unlikely that ingesting a drop or two is going to cause you any noticeable harm. Of course, washing liquid off your skin is recommended, and unless you want copious vomiting and a nice trip to the ER with the possibility of more dire consequences, don't drink it. I keep my liquid locked up away from my kids and dog. They are not habituated to nicotine, and I don't ever want them to taste or drink the liquid, even if I think it's unlikely it would kill them.

Not that I'd drink a bottle of nic, a good scotch perhaps but like anything be careful, but don't worry as millions and millions of Vapers around the planet seem to handle the everyday normal touches of a bit of nic on the skin or a wee splash in the mouth, we get better at it with time.

If on skin wash off with soap and water, if u get some in mouth rinse with water but don't swallow don't panic, depending on your resistance several big drops might only make u a bit nauseous or give u a slight headache or merely nothing at all.

If u spill a whole topper or a bottle on yourself, remove clothes wash and dress.

My GF is from Scotland, I've been over there 7 times, had a great time. Man is there a lot of pubs and clubs. Oh and golf courses lol.

So don't worry to much IMHO shouldn't kill you if u get a bit on yah.

e-liquid is safe, I don't see how you could drink it even with a broken clearomizer, you can actually drink a few drops without problem, happens to people everyday.

If you spill a lot I'm sure the sense of smell from pets is pretty good to tell them to not drink it.

As for children though, better to put your e-liquid bottle out of reach!

This says it best.
Don't sweat getting nic on your skin, you won't notice. If I get it on my hands I wash immediately because they are sticky. The dose of nic on the skin and length of time you need to be exposed to get a reaction is not feasibly.
Same goes for ingesting. You can't accidentally ingest enough nic to make you seriously sick. A drop here or there won't be noticed. Any more then that is no accident.
I did stop feeding it to my dogs.

Guess I am not too cautious. That is why I only use 24mg for my base to DIY. When I am making my 12mg juice, i use my thumb as a cap when I shake it between heating. But, it is better to be more careful than less careful. PS, I love Scottland as well. We pulled into Faslane a few times and I have been all over including Glascow, Stirling and Edinbourgh. Can't find any fish and chips anywere else in the world just as good. Also, Scottland is the only place I have seen 2 Liter bottles of Strongbow on the shelf beside the Coca Cola!

Remember that even if you're vaping 36mg juice, that's only 3.6% nicotine. You probably don't want to drink the bottle, but a few stray drops on your hands or in your mouth is no big deal.

If you're DIYing and using undiluted nicotine, be more careful. But the premixed juice is relatively safe.
