hello all!

although I myself have not picked up an e-cig (don't smoke although planning to vape in the near and dear future) I look up information for a friend who does vape. At the moment he is trying to mess with his own liquids but he says something is "missing" he uses lorann flavors and mixed them with 50mg strength unflavored from extreme vapor. he makes the liquid VG based and adds VG to cut it down to 25 mg.

his first attempts he claims he couldn't taste any flavor and that it wasn't sweet (which is funny cause he was using cotton candy) and he made another of coffee, vanilla butternut and I believe caramel. he again claimed that it wasn't sweet. During that time he was cutting his VG 50/50 with distilled water so thinking it was the VG he removed the water and used it straight. He mixed flavors which came up pretty thick, and they smell strong not only the vapor but the liquid, yet he still claims something is "missing" and that it doesn't "Taste right" does anyone with more experience know what's being done wrong?

PS. He says he's using calculators on the site, multiple in fact to no avail.
PSS if this needs to be moved mods, please feel free to do so, sadly I am still a new member and can only post in the newbie thread XD

In my own DIY experiments I have found that taste declines more the more VG i put in a solution, VG has it's own 'sweet' taste that tends to become (for me) dominating when the mix exceeds 20% VG total. For me personally in my EVO it is tiny so lower vapor production I like to use 10%-20%VG in the final solution to up the vapor production without sacrificing too much flavor.

I do find that I get the most flavor with pure PG but then vapor production declines. I plan on switching to higher voltages soon and will probably just use straight PG when amount of vapor produced becomes less of an issue.

When I first started vaping about a month ago I was on the blu. I couldn't taste anything and kept being told the blu had some of the best flavors. I switched to a 510 about 2 weeks ago and the flavors started coming through in my clove and cranberry (both from lorann and both primarily VG) but still at about the same intensity as the blu. It was my smoking habit that killed my taste buds and sense of smell (where most of your ability to taste complex flavors comes from).

I agree with HawtAngel you have to let the flavors meld for a while. Strait off the mix you're not gonna get much flavor. VG is used for making tinctures so it's good a picking up and carrying flavors but only if you give it time to do so. Just tell your bud to make a mix and give it some time. Both his senses will return and the juice will mature making it better.

Also I find using black plastic dropper bottles helps keep the flavor in a juice. I had a colored glass bottle of juice loose its flavor. I can only assume it was because of the direct sunlight. Just food for thought there.

Did I read that right?

Why vape if you don't smoke?

Actually I have a lot of students, college level I'm not a corrupter of youth here, wanting to vape even though they quit smoking weeks, months or years ago. It's still a social thing to them. Vaping lets them be in the group enjoying a little treat but not having to dance that addiction line. Let's face it it's easier to socially vape with 0-nic juice than be a social smoker and not cross the line into addiction or militant anti-smoker.

yes, that is one of the reasons I am debating vaping 0-nic juice. Alot of the people I hang around smoke, leaving me to be the only odd one out, and after awhile, it does become a bother to me. Although that doesn't mean I can't just pull out a lollipop or something, but I don't like to feel out of the loop when I'm around alot of smokers.

thank you all, I didn't consider that his smoking for so long would kill his taste buds, that might be it, although he has been vaping for some time, on occasion he'll still pick up a real cigarette which might be why he still has trouble tasting some e-juice that to me tastes just fine. I know that he keeps his flavors in dark glass dropper bottles stored in a dark place, but the bottles of mix he takes outside are clear, I will suggest to him to possibly switch to completely dark glass bottles unless he's out and about in public where glass bottles would be difficult to carry or handle. I'll also reccomend having him make it sit longer, he usually has it sit overnight for close to a good 12 hours, but it might need longer

You might want to take a look at these threads. They are discussions of calculators that are available and recipe software to help perfect your own liquids. Perhaps they'll be of help.

he has actually used both those calculators and says it still doesn't taste right to him, although letting it sit did help he said
