So I have a 3-piece system with an off-brand battery and a joytech atomizer. The part where the actual fluid goes in appears to be just a bit of plastic with some cotton shoved inside. After using and refilling them a few times, the wadding has started to get gummed up. I've ordered new ones and, as replacement parts go, they're fairly cheap, but could I save money (and time) by plucking out the filling and replacing it with just ordinary cotton, or some other material? The plastic part doesn't seem to take much wear and tear, and if I did that I'd only need occasional atomizer and battery replacements.

You have to dig into some older posts to find this information, but here's a start - Cartridge filler materials. My personal favorite was blue filter material for fish tanks, but with the advent of decent cartomizers and more recent advances in clearomizers, it has been a long time since I thought about a cartridge.

I used the foam too. I don't see why regular cotton would be a problem unless it started tasting burnt. In the old days people used to mod teabags and slide them into the filler to hold more juice. You can also direct drip right onto the atomizer. It sounds like the same kit I started with and that's what I did most of the time.

Cotton tends to leave fibers in the bridge (wick) more than the other solutions.

Tried dripping?
Back "in the day"...I gave up on all the blue foam, PTB, and whatnot and just dripped. I dripped for 2 years in fact...hate carto filler too. lol. I can always taste that filler stuff. Now that they have tanks with silca wicks and replaceable/rebuildable heads, I haven't dripped either.

However, dripping is easy. You can replace the plastic cart with a drip tip. Until you get one, take the stupid filler out of the cart. You may wish to trim off some of the "flat part" end....about 2mm. This keeps it off the bridge in case the bridge gets hot. You'll have to remove the cart to drip into the atomizer. With a drip tip, you just drip through the center and don't have to remove it.

Assuming the atomizer has been used before, just drip about 3 drops into it and vape about 10 or so hits. Drip 3, vape 10, drip 3, vape 10.......

If it gets flooded, you dripped too frequently. If burn/dry drip sooner. You'll soon get it.

Works tons better than the cart filler nonsense.

Considering that. The company that I buy from does make drip tips. Still, I kind of like being able to vape hands free, just puffing on it.

OK, cool. Whatever works for you is the best thing.

How often do you have to top off the cart?

Also, FYI, I found that the CE2's (at the time) were good top coil clearos. You don't have to drip or top em off and they perform similar to an atty. You fill with a syringe and tip to wet the coil. There's newer models out now too. You would want a drip tip on em or something to give you some distance away from the top coil.

They are disposible and a bit harder to clean than an atty. Atties used to last me a month or two before I'd change em out. Clearos...much less.

Yeah. I seem to burn through clearos really quickly, while my atomizer has yet to die on me. Have already ordered a replacement though for when it does.

Toping off the cart I have to do once every few minutes if I'm puffing on it regularly.

If you're topping off a carto, then vaping it hands free for awhile, then topping it off again, that's basically the same as dripping.

It sounded like dripping would take more frequent refills, wouldn't it?

It depends on your juice and your vaping style. I get 4-5 good drags while dripping. You can use one of the empty cartridges as a drip tip and give it a try.

ETA: I have a blog about direct dripping that will give you a basic overview: Drip, Drip, Drip…
