I know this is the wrong forum so can the mods please move this. I am too new to post in the DIY eliquid forum. Thanks.

So on to my question. I am going to start making my own juice I've read all the stickies and I've read Hoosiers blogs maybe 15 times over already. I kind of understand everything but I am a little confused. When buying your nic base how do you know if you should get 100%pg or 100%vg or 50/50 nic base? I know of calculators for the recipes but it always just says nic base nic mg/ml and target nic strength. I just don't understand how this plays into your final pg vg ratio.

Thanks

Hello :) It's personal choice. PG is thinner, gives more of a throat hit, and carries flavor. VG is thicker, sweeter, and produces more vapor. All of my DIY is 100% VG and I always use 100%VG base. One thing to keep in mind is the nicotine content in your liquids. If you're doing a higher amount of nicotine you're going to be using more of the base. What ratio do you normally order in your e liquids?

The carrier, VG or PG, of your nic base makes little difference unless you're trying to make a 100% VG or 100% PG final product. If you start with 100% PG nic base you then mix with VG and/or PG to dilute to your desired ratio and nic strength.

For example if I buy 50 mL 100% PG @ 60mg base, I can mix it with 50 mL PG, then 100 mL VG for a 50/50 ratio at 15 mg strength.
The eJuice Me Up - Best eJuice Calculator makes it easy to figure out the ratios.

I have a liter of 100% PG and one of 100% VG. I normally vape between 60/40 and 40/60 PG/VG, depending on topper and juice. Eventually, the topper and type of vape may well help determine which way to go. I often mix a 50/50 solution of nic, which makes putting in the thicker VG a bit easier to use with a syringe. Sometimes it's just practicality. Maybe I need bigger syringes? I think your answer was well covered above. Good luck!

Maybe do like I have done to get started. Buy some plain pg, some plain vg, some pg based nic and some vg based nic.

Now you have all your bases covered. I bought the 48% nic in each case to allow me to dilute down to 6 or 12 as need be.

I feel that this prepares you to be ready for any challenge out there.

(Hooray me! My 200th post!)

I prefer PG based nic because it easier to work with and it stays mixed up better.
VG based nic may "ribbon" - which means basically that the concentrated nic will separate and concentrate in ribbons of really, really high nic concentrations (nic suppliers start with pure "100%"nic and mix it down to the nic strengths you buy ie: 100mg nic is 10% nic and 90% carrier (pg or vg), 60mg nic is 6% nic and 94% carrier, etc.)

So with VG based concentrated unflavored nic you need to make sure you mix/shake it very, very well before making your DIY mixes to keep from accidently making a ridiculously high nic mix.

I recommend beginners start with a lower concentration of nic such as 36 or 48 mg nic (get a 120ml to start with) until you are comfortable with the diy process and safety is ingrained - I now cut my 100mg base down to 36mg batches to mix with and keep the 100mg nic in a locked box in my freezer until I need more working base

Never work with 60 or 100mg nic base when there are distractions around (kids, spouse, other family, pets, tv, turn phone off, etc) and only work with it in a well ventilated hard surface area (easier to clean up a spill off of a hard surface than it is off of carpet)

AND ALWAYS BE CAREFUL!!!!

just my 2 cents and welcome to DIY
