My very first mod uses an LED flashlight with a three AAA battery holder. I simply built the atty adapter, switch, and LED into the head end and it works about like a regular e-cig battery as far as the vape goes. The original switch serves to shut if off. I used a 901 atty. I've used it a bit (a couple of hours) and the batterys are still good enough to vape. I was thinking that some lithium AAAs might work even better than the alkalines, but they're costly.

My daily vape is a BE112 passthrough.

Could I make a NicoStick with Ni-MH batteries or alkalines? For example, get a 4xAA battery holder and mod as with the standard NicoStick, but then have 3 AA batts for power?

3 Ni-MH AAs would give 3.6v (1.2 x 3) and 3 alkalines would give 4.5v (1.5 x 3) for a bit of a "hotter" vape.

Would this work in theory?

Yeah , it's the only thing I use and it RULZ!
Radio Shack has this deal right now(Before 07-11-09)
...You get the charger and 4 X AA 1.2v
(I get 4.2 volts on a full charge )
and they're 2500 mah...
as much as 60 hrs per charge!
$8.00 cheaper than I've ben paying.
