Thanks to Sam Munro Chair of ECCA (UK version of CASAA) for this story:

BBC News - Nicotine treatment 'could control obesity'

In an article in the journal Science, Yale University researchers describe experiments on mice which found nicotine activates neurons to send signals the body has had enough to eat.

However they are not the same neurons which trigger a craving for tobacco.

As a result, the researchers say nicotine-based treatments could help control obesity.

Just thinking out loud. Could this be part of the weight gain problem some have when quitting nic ?

Absolutely. This article claims the average weight gain on smoking cessation is only 2.5 Kilos. This is only my personal opinion, but I believe that the data may have been cherry picked to avoid alarming smokers about trading one health risk (smoking) for another (obesity). And indeed many of the health risk calculators show a longer life for a smoking thinner person than for an obese former smoker.

More recent research has admitted that for many smokers--especially women, the average is closer to 13 Kilos.

There is also no mention that the weight gain tends to be cumulative. The weight gained with smoking cessation tends to be resistant to all attempts to lose it. So if you quit numerous times and gain 10 pounds each time, by the time you have tried and failed 3 or 4 times, you've gone from normal to overweight to obese.

I have to wonder if there's also something else in cigarettes that "keep the weight off". I switched to vaping 16mos. ago and am now 30#'s heavier. I smoked 3 1/2 packs a day and now I chain vape. Very interesting...

Marty

Wow. If you were smoking 3 1/2 packs a day, it's possible that even with chain vaping you're not getting the same amount of nicotine that you used to. For example, when I got my blood tested by VCU, I vaped very consistently for an hour straight (16mg liquid as I recall). As I recall, when the researcher presented the results (not of mine necessarily, but of others who probably vaped similarly), the height of the blood nicotine levels was only the point that a smoker would reach if he smoked 2 cigarettes in a 15, 20 minute period.

Back before there were e-cigs ...
I stopped smoking cold turkey for about a month
and discovered tons of different kinds of food to enjoy

Bought one of those bread makers ... house smelled wonderful 24/7

Was told that all the weight I put on wasn't from the bread
but all the butter and jam.
:p

Nah, I used to walk past a bakery on my way home from junior high school. I swear I gained weight from the smell of the bread baking. I couldn't smell any butter or jam...

Yet more positive news for tobacco users.

It may end up where people who use low risk tobacco products are overall healthier then non-users.
Wouldn't that be a hoot......
It wouldn't surprise me after all the heat is off and the FDA is cool with e-cigs
that we might just see a study proving those with a moderate consumption
of nicotine via low risk tobacco products ... Live longer.
:p

There is a reason I continue to use 12mg even though I am not addicted to nicotine.

So Calif
I made a conscious decision when I quit smoking to vape sweet stuff. Every time I had tried to quit before I gained a ton of weight because I kept putting food in my mouth in place of that cigarette. I also have a sweet tooth.

I've been off cigarettes since 24 Feb 2011, I vape mostly dessert flavors or espresso juices and I have not gained a pound so far. I don't seem to want sweets at all as I get the taste and smell of them via vaping. I don't know if it's delusional on my part or factual, but vaping those flavors seems to kill the 'need' to put the real thing in my mouth.

YMMV

Consider Prohibition (Capital B) and how far we've done. Now, there is actually a RECOMMENDED daily alcohol intake amount.

"But honey, the government RECOMMENDS I have this beer!"

If my foggy memory serves me right, the early studies done on pipe smokers showed they lived slightly longer then the general population. It was thought that perhaps the relaxation and contemplation of smoking a pipe, which is a much different experience then smoking cigarettes, and is also not inhaled, contributed to a longer life. In 1964 the surgeon general released a report on tobacco use and condemned cigarettes as being harmful, but did not condemn pipe smoking. That wasn't changed until 1979.

Could it be that the nicotine warded off things like dementia and weight gain that is common in later life. Probably better to smoke a pipe bowl then eat a bag of chips.

Now all we get is dangerous misinformation from the powers that be

Health Fraud

Reality is often different from propaganda.
I'm well over 60 and can't tell ya how much
pure BS I've heard in my life.

Actually, we all are hearing a lot of pure BS right now
due to this being an election year.

Nicotine is guilty, in the general public's opinion,
simply due to the association with tobacco.

Actually, nicotine is one of the few ingredients
in cigarettes that many have heard of ... and can pronounce.

Interesting article and discussion.
The first year I quit smoking and started vaping, I actually lost weight.
I have gained some of it back as my vaping has settled down some to less chain vaping but I'm still not up where I was when I quit smoking. I'm sure that if I could not vape (and I did not go back to smoking), I would, like Petrodus mentioned, find excitement in different foods and satisfy my oral cravings with food and end up gaining weight.
