I was told by a friend NOT to take beta-carotene supplements since I smoke & e-smoke (she doesn't know how it affects e-smokers). She read that these supplements don't help prevent against lung cancer BUT may even increase the risk of lung cancer in men who smoke! She said it'd be a good idea to take 150 micrograms of selenium daily which may prevent lung cancer. Anyone else heae of this? If so - what's the logic behind it & will it help for e-smokers?

At one point in time it was believed Beta-Carotene would help to prevent lung cancer so a big trial was carried out on smokers, the results showed a slight increase in lung cancer among people taking the Beta-Carotene. I have not seen a study done on Selenium. But I did read a promising study done using 1500mg a day Taurine and 2000MG Vit C that showed drastically improved blood flow in smokers in 7 days. Smoking hardens arteries and Taurine has been shown to reverse this and make them elastic again.

As Kent pointed out, this has been a yo-yo. Years ago, the advice for smokers was to take massive beta carotene for antioxidant benefits. I took so much that the palms of my hands were the orange of carrots. Then another study showed no benefit and a slight danger (ha; slight danger for smokers????). Hard to tell if the jury is still out on this one, and the finding will be reversed next year. Selenium? Yes. Vitamin C? Absolutely and at high levels (you'll pee away what you don't need and use). E? Hard to say again with some studies in conflict. B12/folic acid? Excellent. D? Get some sun daily. And it goes on...

As with all supplements, gain knowledge first and then weigh the possibility for positive improvements against the danger of negative consequences.

I saw mention of another study on google news today that Selenium and Vit E don't reduce chances of prostate cancer like previously expected and their was also a slight increased risk of getting prostate cancer from taking them so for men atleast, it may be a bad idea.
Also today I met someone that takes EDTA as a supplement they said they were always tired and this stuff changed that, so I been reading some interesting stuff about it like how it gets arsenic out your body that builds up from years of smoking. Also some people believe that smoking causes amalgam fillings to leak mecury in to your system, could be quackery I don't know, but EDTA is a proven treatment for getting heavy metals like lead and mercury out the body.
For me when I was using snus and at one time used copanhagen snuff that chewed my gums i found large doses of Vitamin C fixed that. These days I just take taurine and C mostly cause taurine is added to red bull to prevent the heart racing from too much caffeine and it definetly brings ones pulse down and blood pressure although i already have low blood pressure. No real reason for taking C i think it helps circulation aswell I worry way more about my heart stopping than cancer.

So it didn't prevent prostate cancer. So? We should all be so lucky as to live long enough to get prostate cancer. Doctors say it's almost guaranteed if men live to a ripe old age. Got that right. It killed my dad at 88. He ignored early warning signs.

Look, avoid megadoses of FAT-SOLUBLE vitamins, but the rest just create the world's most expensive urine if the body can't make use of them. My dermatologist takes 83 pills a day. Major believer. I used to take more than 30 a day. Look at the lives of Linus Pauling and the doctor who discovered Vit C -- lived into their 90s and healthy as fat pigs. Took massive, massive doses every day. Same for the Canadian docs behind Vit E. And Vit D got a bad rap until lately. Now, a lack of it is causing all kinds of problems. Get sun exposure daily!

I refuse to live life reversing direction with every new study. History is a great teacher. Research and make your own decisions.
