There really is nothing quite like working for yourself, and being your only employee. You guys make me think about why I love my job so much!

People tell me how lucky I am that I work for myself. Well...I really don't. I am accountable to brokers, shippers, receivers, the Department of Transportation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, every state trooper in the world and every other motor vehicle on the roadways. What I am in control of is who I choose to have as my partners in this business endeavor. If I don't like the way you do business, I will most probably tell you so and 'fire' you. That is a freedom that I love. I have my ethics and I can choose to work with those who share them. So far, so good. But I have way too many 'bosses'.

My husband is self employed and he has it made. I, on the other hand, have an extreme amount of stress in my job and I'm too old to quit now and start over when so close to retirement. SOMEBODY in our family has to keep us covered with medical insurance and sock money into retirement plans. I just never wanted that to be ME!

My office is moving in a few months. We're going from one location of 24,000 SF to two locations totaling 8,000 SF which appears to be physically impossible right now. I'm responsible for the move, connectivity, data circuits, voice circuits, remodeling, upgrading servers, purging old stuff, cleaning up data, and lastly coordinating the physical move. My new office is a 2.5 minute drive from our house.

This is the trade off. I had the designer put me in the smallest office and made it clear when it's over, I will be working 75% from home. It's the only way I'll survive another 5 years. Only problem is I'll be sharing office space at home with you know who! But it has to be less stressful.

I know that feeling! It's not the best position for the self employed ....especially when no-one seems to realise the recession is over in my area of business!

...only as long as he isn't bellowing into a phone all the time! Before he retired, my husband used to work at home a few afternoons now and then, and it disturbed me even in different rooms! ;)

If you need any help with the data cleaning, I could use some side work to pay for my NT habit.

Data center moves are dreadful. I hope I never have to be part of another ever again. Most of the servers don't want to come up right and they are usually the most critical ones that act up the worst. I am so sorry you are having to go through this!

Oh my. I think that's why I had my first mini meltdown when our building sold. I was asked for an estimate of the cost to move and I told them a quarter of a million when adding in lost productivity. That was before the two office concept came up. Now, I say closer to half. One of the buildings purchased is a historical building that has to be completely gutted (and I'm not including reno costs). Did I mention we only have 4 months? When 2 offices was decided, I had another meltdown and soon realized how out of my element I am. I've never had to connect a remote office. Where's that Cisco engineer I gave birth to when I need him? Oh yeah, Colorado. :(

They threw out my idea of hosted desktops so we're staying in the hardware biz. That SAN needs to be carried out on a bed of cotton and transported by airboat. I'd rather eat dirt than deal with AT&T any more. Then add phone vendors, various IT vendors, architects, designers, contractors, insurance companies, accountants, banks, 2 new LLC set-ups to own the buildings etc. etc.

That's all in addition to my regular work which was just majorly complicated by a large lawsuit settlement that will take the entire month of October to facilitate. Friday, I dealt with well over 120 emails, 4 contractors on site, an employee involved in an auto accident, three conference calls, at least 6 interoffice meetings and my main assistant went home sick. I'm only one person and stretched to my limit.

Sorry. Didn't mean to hijack this thread. Rant over. Now, where's that Xanax?

I guess I'm going to stick to my plan of staying a student forever and never joining the workforce...I'll just keep going for degrees and eventually Doctorates...just got a find someone who will sponsor such a momentous scholastic journey!

MOM: "Our son is doing so well in college!"
DAD : Is he ever gonna graduate? It's been 8 years! When's he gonna move out and get a job?"
MOM: "Don't be so negative! Show some encouragement!"

Son rushes into the room: "My thesis on dead languages just got accepted! Now I can go after my Masters!"
MOM: "Honey, that's wonderful!"
Sound of Dad's body hitting the floor

I retracted my statement. Sorry for the rudeness, everyone. It was not intentional!

I didn't consider it rude either. Truthfully, there are a lot of stressful jobs and if I had to do it all over, I certainly would have changed my career path. I'd bet a lot of folks could say that. I've told my kids a hundred times to make sure they're happy with their careers or change it while they're young.

In a weird kind of way, quitting smoking in the midst of this is pretty incredible. I amazed myself but thank God for the vape. :). I can still get up and go to work, so shouldn't complain.

On a positive note, we worked on the office in our house all day and I have my office space now and need to drag home some monitors, dock, printer/scanner etc. I think if about half of those hours could be done at home, it will help immensely.

It is because a lot of jobs are stressful and people handle stress differently that I retracted my statement. What I perceive as stressful another may find a walk in the park. Take Clark's former profession: I could not handle that at all. I did a brief stint (pun not intended) by falling back on nursing several years ago. I chose Geriatrics and it was heart breaking for me every day. I was so relieved to get back to I.T. again. Even though I have days with high stress, it is nothing compared to watching patients die every day and the immense sorrow their families feel while waiting for it to happen.

It wasn't right for me to make a statement that insinuates people who don't have jobs as Emergency Responders or in I.T. have less stress, not having walked a mile in their shoes.
