Someone sold you the wrong atty for what you are looking for and how you are looking to do it. I have had luck nearly closing off all the holes except for the last row and making sure that the open holes are in front of the coils.

This is how I've been vaping it and have actually been pretty happy with the flavor it is currently producing. I definitely would like to pick up a couple other atties to try out though.

My favorite builds in the Mutation X series are all higher gauge wire. My mx v1 has a dual coil 28g/32 helix parallel to twisted 28g, .28 ohm. My mx v3 has a dual helix 28g/34g at .25 ohms. I use mechs only. Both have great flavor, on the cooler side.

I personally vape both fully wide open.

What everyone said about lower resistance. My Magma is my go-to flavor atty, but....the Mut X V3 still gives *great* flavor for being a cloud chucker. You just need to build at 0.3 or lower on a mech to the goodie out of it.

Once I got my Mut X, I shelved my TOBH and Doge V1.

Once I really dialed in my Mutation x V1, I had to get the v3. The poor Veritas, Magma, Orchid v4, CLT v2+ ---- gettin no loving :(

Hehe. I almost shelved my Magma, but I found an optimized build for it and now it's the dripper I use 80% of the time. The other 20% I want to cloud chase and pick up the Mut X. I love them both for diff reasons. I built a single 2.5mm 24g coil on the Magma 0.5 to 0.6 (don't remember exactly) resistance, pushed the coil as close to the air hole as it will go w/o touching the deck, and OMG the flavor.

Every dual coil build I've tried on the Magma has failed to impress me.

I have a hard time going back to such restricted airflow after using cloud chasers. I think you may be right about finding the right build for them. I've been trying to go very low, like .2-3 single clapton and it just isn't meant for it.

I'll try out a single coil in the Magma this weekend, at .5-.6.

I also need to find a build for my Veritas.

I have the best of all worlds. Depending on my mood I use tight draw RTA and RDAs for flavor, or open airy RDA for clouds. :)

Let me know if going single coil in the Magma changes your opinion of it. It certainly did mine.

Also, choking off the first line of airflow holes on the Mut X enables it to give surprisingly good flavor for being what it is. I imagine using the 510 drip tip adapter would help flavor too.

I have had a similar problem with mine as well! First build was a dual coil at 0.5 ohms and was great!! Then I did a quad coil 0.2 ohms and it tasted like wet socks! So I rewicked and tried new juice! Same thing! Wet socks. Then I redid the coils again, twisted 28 around 24, 0.2 ohms. Wet socks, again!!!! Why!!! Why so good at first and now horrible!?!?
I only have a pic of the quad, thought I had one of the twisted. But here's another build with same concept.

From the looks of those builds, your coils are nowhere near any airflow. If you want flavor, you need direct airflow on those coils and air space all around them.
So, pull them up and out, position them slightly above the airholes, imagine the line that the air takes from the holes to your mouth and put your coils there.
It may seem weird at first, since your coils may be waaaayyyyy higher than they are now, but Im telling you it works.
You 'wet gym socks' taste is probably because your coil is getting way too hot, and doesnt have enough air to cool it down.

Very much this. In my mutation x, my coil legs always very long and the coils sits right in front of the airholes, almost touching it. By doing this, a wide open mx feels much less airy and more flavorful. Loving this dual hybrid build, twisted 28g with 30 and 32 helixed on top. Also raise the coils so they're smack dab aligned with the middle airholes so it can pass under and over as evenly as possible.

I'll give that a shot. With the Quad coil build I found it hard to position the coils where I wanted them to go, but that was probably due to my shorter leg length. I'll give the quad coils a go one more time and see how they turn it trying it that way!

Talk about flavor. Amazing from new build last night. 26g parallel 26g/32g clapton

I'm running my Mutation v3 with a single parallel coil at 30g, 1/8" ID and 1.8 ohm on an iStick 30W at 30W. I have my AFC at 30 degrees to the end of the coil set at 3 open holes with half of the next 3 open, and I can chuck clouds with a VG heavy sauce with very good flavor.

I had a tough time finding a build that tasted good, though. This atty makes it easy to fog out an apartment, but finding a build/airflow setting with flavor takes some experimentation.
