Let me start by saying I am NOT a smoker, nor do I want to take it up. (no offense to those who do, its just not for me...I want to avoid the nicotine addiction) That said, I've been looking at e-cigs, since apparently they sell cartridges with 0mg nicotine which would allow me to "smoke" without the smell, taste or nicotine. I was curious, however, whether the "zero nicotine" cartridges actually were devoid of nicotine. In my research online some sites claim there actually is trace amounts of nicotine in every cartridge tested... is this true, or is it anti-ecig propaganda? Also, how safe are ecigs in general? (Considering I currently am not a smoker, the "they're safer than actual cigarettes" argument doesn't apply to me)

Thanks in advance!

0 nic is only truly 0 nic if you just buy the PG/VG mix or plain PG or VG. Everything else, it's anyone's guess if it is really 0 nic. Nobody can tell you if e-cigs are really 100% safe, not enough research out there. For us smokers, I believe it's safer than cigis but is it 100%? Who knows. It's a risk we take by vaping, has to be better than smoking, I FEEL better..... Your decision. But then again, why do you want to start vaping if you're not a smoker?

I imagine its because smoking (besides being so addictive) is also a very social activity. There are also the c-cigs that are designed to help with weight loss (vape your sweets etc). Being able to have the social aspect of vaping/smoking without the negative $$ and health effects could be desirable. Here in Australia the sale of liquid nicotine is prohibited. Because of this we have many vendors who create and sell awesome 0Nic E-Juice which we then mix with nicotine (purchased o/seas).

Probably the first time I've ever tried to convince someone away from e-cigs, but since your not a smoker, that's exactly what I would try to do. Nothing inhaled into your lungs is EVER going to be "safe" (other than air), no matter how devoid the carts or juice is of nicotine.

Even though I suggest every smoker try them and see if they are for them, in your case, I would simply suggest to steer clear. But that's just my two cents....and that with 1.98 will get ya' a cup of coffee :)

Yah, my brother is intrigued with my pv and is looking at getting a kit. He's a non-smoker and I've been trying to convince him it might not be the best idea. He's thinking with all the flavors the taste might help him lose some weight (My brother is a really big guy and a big snacker). Kinda hoping the draw of it will wear off in a week and I'll have myself a brand new 510 kit to add to my collection:p

Wow, thanks for all the replies...didn't know my little question would receive so much attention...

A lot of you were asking why I was asking about the whole e-cig thing... This is a fair question. To be perfectly honest I'm not completely sold and am definitely not planning on buying anything anytime soon. That said, smoking is one of those things that looks cool and can be a very social activity (as someone above mentioned)... and if e-cigs were a way to acheive that aspect without any of the negative health effects (which has kept me away from it until now) I thought it might be worth looking into, or at the very least asking some questions about. Call me a hipster if you'd like, I probably deserve it. :p

(Also, while it is certainly not my intent, I apologize if this offends anyone who is struggling with nicotine addiction... Please know that I wish you the best of luck if that be the case.)

As a non-smoker who does use e-cigs with 0 nic juices, let me give my two cents on this.

The main reasons why I do it is to support my wife in her quitting cigarettes, and to share an activity with her that we both find relaxing. I also have to admit that I really like the flavors, and I have noticed it cut down on me reaching for the snacks (have a bit of a sweet tooth). That said, I can definitely understand why ex-smokers would want to warn non-smokers off of using e-cigs. We still don't know if e-cigs are 100% safe (really, almost nothing ever is,), and even though it's not smoke, tar, poisons, and gods know what else being inhaled into the lungs, you're still enhaling stuff that your lungs really aren't designed to deal with. Still, to be fair, it IS vapor, and if anyone has spent any amount of time in a kitchen cooking, you breathe in that stuff anyway. But better safe than sorry, right?

At the end of the day, it's your decision. The only caveat I'd put in is to not take it up just becaue you think it looks "cool". That tends to be a bad reason to take up any activity.

I'll spare you all the moralizing and answer your question. There is 0 nicotine juice. The reports that the anti-ecig crowd have glommed onto are basically the result of contamination. Specifically, there were some Chinese cartridges tested and certain components of nicotine were present in trace amounts. It is thought that they came from insufficiently purified, non-USP grade VG in the liquid. VG is made from vegetables and many vegetables contain some nicotine.

If you get 0 nic juice from a reputable manufacturer, there is little risk that it will contain any nicotine, least of all enough to create an addiction. This is nicotine, not plutonium. Worst case scenario is that sloppy manufacturing practices results in a trace amount due to cross-contamination, but that's probably about the worst thing you have to worry about.

If you want to be 100% sure, make your own juice with USP VG and food grade PG. Otherwise, any risk of nicotine being in commercially prepared juice is negligible.
