Non-smoker using e-cigarettes?

My best friend smokes but says she wants to quit. She has tried before but wasn't successful. So I gave her an ultimatum: either she stops smoking by my birthday (November 15) or I start smoking. She knows that I don't like smoking and she doesn't want me caught up in the addiction therefore she agreed immediately. She's been working on it, however, some people have been convincing her that I dislike smoking so much that I would never actually do it. I want to make sure she takes me seriously and actually quits smoking. So I got the idea to smoke an electronic cigarette around her. I do not actually want to actually get into smoking but I want her to think that I would. I have found some non-tobacco, non-nicotine electronic cigarettes and electronic hookah pens.

My question is can I trust them? Although there is no tobacco or nicotine, what kind of health risks would there be for me?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Forcing someone to quit won't work. She has to be ready. Having never smoked, you can't possibly understand the power of nicotine addiction.

That being said, I'm with the other posters here - recommend this site and take her to a decent vape shop so she can check it out. Also, I highly recommend Allen Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking". Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking: The Easyway To Stop Smoking: Allen Carr: 9780615482156: Amazon.com: Books. You might buy and read it yourself before giving it to her. It's a quick read, and will offer you insight into what she's facing.

You can try to force people to quit all you want but in the end it's all up to them, I would suggest getting her to try vaping instead of you starting, some smoke shops are starting to sell off brand starter kits, suggest looking around in your area for these, they are a pretty good starter for $30 in CA just make sure they are the ego type ones that look more like a cigar than a cigarette. And have her start with some fun flavors rather than the tobacco flavors. Hope this helps.

I am not forcing her. She said she wants to quit. I am simply trying to help her do that. She has tried vaping before and didn't stick to it. She would do anything for me and her thinking that I would start is the kind of push that will force her to quit. I just want to know what I'm getting into health-wise.

Despite "wanting" to quit pressure of any kind won't help, and in fact hurt. Trust me.
Sometimes smokers will halfheartedly say they want to quit because of the pressure and negative comments and disapproving looks. Which causes a person to smoke more.

Best thing you can do is back off and if/when she quits you support her. You are doing the worst thing possible by demanding she quit and setting a date.

Thank you for your responses .I simply ask for health related information.

Health, Safety and E-Smoking

Excuse some of our ECF members for being a tad sensitive to a non-smoker inquiring about taking up vaping, even if that person has no intentions of using nicotine e-liquid. Most of us are recovering from decades of being addicted to tobacco products, and since there are few if any long term scientific studies on the safety of e-cigarette usage, we tend to become a little over-zealous.

My own college age daughter vapes no-nic eliquid.

Wonderful gesture and intentions... but probably not an advisable approach.

Not to over dramatize it... but about 36 hours into a cold turkey quit in my past... my most dearest friend could be holding a gun to their head threatening the worst if I didn't quit. I'd most likely would have calmly taken the gun from them, cleaned and oiled it, loaded fresh ammo into every chamber, placed it back in their hand with the safety off and helped with proper targeting... Not really!!! But I think you'll get the point.

You're better off just be a supporting player... maybe take her shopping to a few vape shops that will let her try various flavors. Maybe offer to buy her juice or a blinged up e-cig. But seriously... just ride shotgun, don't try to drive or threaten harm to yourself to motivate her to make the choice to quit.

Be the listening post... the supporter without motives. Listen more than you talk. If she's like most women she'll appreciate that more than Mr/Ms Fix-It... Far more than Mr/Ms Threats or Mr/Ms Controller... Let her drive... buy her gas.

Thank you for your responses but I'm not looking for judgement on my methods. I honestly don't care whether or not my thinking is approved by a bunch of strangers. You neither know me nor my friend. I simply ask for health related information.

Whatever happens, don't start smoking. How's that for advice from a stranger?

My question is can I trust them? Although there is no tobacco or nicotine, what kind of health risks would there be for me?

Basically none. They look similar, but vaping isn't smoking.

Sorry for the extra advice... saw your last post you added while I was composing my sage advice.

You'll be fine. Find you a decent e-cig... maybe an eGo battery and EVOD or Pro-tank set-up. By some 0 nic juice from one of the juice vendors listed here... several to choose from. You'll be safe from a vaping perspective. Best of luck to you and your friend!!

No worries :) I don't mean to seem so hostile. I just hate feeling so helpless in her struggle. I live 5 hours away at college and can't do much with helping her. She's not quitting cold turkey, she's weaning herself off. She's doing well with it but she has before as well. I just want a way to help her if push comes to shove.

Some tips for her:

There is no one way or best way to quit smoking using e-cigarettes. Some do it cold turkey, some drag it out for weeks before they have their last cigarette. Some even have one weeks after quitting just to see if they have truely quit.

We have a saying here, "Its not how many cigarettes that you smoke that count, its the ones you didn't."

What worked for me is I set up a quit date of one week with one pack of cigarettes left. I allowed myself a few cigarettes a day. I vaped as much as I felt like needed to. If I felt like I really needed a cigarette, I vaped more.

If that didn't help, I allowed myself HALF of a cigarette, and save the other half for later. I continued this for the rest of the week. Soon, the cigarettes began to taste bad, and I actually preferred vaping more. Once the pack was done, so was I. I haven't had nor wanted a cigarette since. Over 1.5 years and counting.

The last time she tried quitting she said that they tasted and smelled horrible. She said she understood how I felt being around such a smell when I don't partake in it myself. I think one of the main reasons she went back to cigarettes is because she was using her grandma's e-cigarettes and couldn't get any more once she ran out. If she's still working on quitting in 2 weeks when I come visit for my birthday I think I'll try buying her some more.

You're not helpless, you now have tens of thousands vapers rooting for her and you. :toast:
Willing to help anytime of the day or night. :) Introduce her to us, and we promise we won't try to steal her away from you. Of course she would have to put up with our corny humor from time to time...

I would especially recommend downloading, printing, and reading Dr. Igor Burstyn's study. :)

You could tell her all you want for your birthday is for her to try vaping, and investigating it here on ECF...:)
She has tried vaping before and didn't stick to it.
We would be happy to help her, as well as you, if she is willing to give it a try. :thumb:

You didn't ask, but the most recommended starters setup consists of the following:
A Good Starter Setup for a Beginning Vapor
This is a helpful guide, and I do recommend reading it.

For a good price on the Kanger Evod, I think this kit was mentioned before. It doesn't have a spinner/twist battery, which would make it better, but it's the most basic version of everything you and/or your friend would need to start, excepting juice. Within a few weeks you would want a backup battery or two and some replacement coil heads. ECF members would be very happy to help with basic use, maintenance, and troubleshooting kinds of questions.

I think that model would be a little too complicated for her. She's more of a convenience person. She used a disposable e-cig previously so I was thinking of a type like Blu. No coils, no liquids, just charge the battery and screw in a flavor tip.
