Howdy all, new here, and new to vaping!

Long story short, I've been a pack a day Newport smoker for 15+ years, and decided to give vaping a try. I started vaping literally 8 days ago, and have been cigarette free for 8 days. Loving it so far, but have a couple of concerns.

On day 1 I purchased an EGO AIO with some juice rated at 6mg nicotine to see if I would like it. Turns out I did, so I soon bough an Alien 220 with a Baby Beast tank. The problem I am having though is that I seem to cough a ton while vaping. I can't seem to handle all the vape hitting my lungs. Is this something that passes after I get accustom to it?

Also, it seems my nic amount is too low? A friend gave me a ton of juice rated at 3mg, so I have been using that for the past couple of days. From the research I've done, it looks like I am suppose to start at a higher nic level? I don't crave for a cigarette though, but it does seem like I "chain vape"....should I up my nic, or am I fine chain vaping at a lower nic level. Talking 300-400 puffs per day here.....don't know if that is an obscene amount, lol.

Thanks!

Welcome! The coughing isn't uncommon, there are a few ways to lessen it if it doesn't back off soon. You'll have to search this whole forum for all that info- there is much.

The nic level seem fine, especially if you're not craving. It goes by the wattage/daily use and such.

Chain vaping is fine, many do that.

Keep it going until you get several weeks behind you and then you can customize it all. Doin good so far- looks like!!

Ah, the purge cough! I like to think that the body is trying to purge all the tar and garbage out of your lungs from the cigarettes. But that may not be true! ;)I too had a cough when taking a pull in the beginning. It does pass after a few weeks though. The important thing is to stick with it.

It is possible that you could be slightly PG sensitive causing your cough as well. Experiment with different variations of PG/VG blends and see if that makes a difference.

As for your nic level, you have to use what works best for you. I will say that using a Baby Beast you probably won't want to use a very high nic level as it will feel like inhaling glass! At least that's what I get from higher nic levels when doing direct lung pulls. If you feel like you are vaping too much then up the nic level a bit and see if that helps. I started out with 18mg but I was strictly vaping mouth to lung at that point. Once I started to experiment with direct lung hits I quickly dropped to 6mg and finally down to 3mg where I have been for the past couple of years.

The moral of the story is take your time and experiment with a variety of things. That is what makes vaping such a wonderful tool to stop smoking. There are literally hundreds of thousands of options when you take into account the variety of tanks, mods, juices, etc. The most important thing is to not give up and stay off the analogs. Congrats on quitting!! I wish you nothing but the best in your vape journey!!

If you want to vape less get higher nicotine. It depends on what you like. I prefer high nicotine with a subohm tank. I only take a couple puffs every 20-30 minutes and love the little pick me up I get. I use 24mg's of nicotine in my juice and with a subohm it's quite nice. Try it out and see what you like better. Lower nic and more puffin or high nic and the occasional three or four puff set.

There is likely a big difference between the Baby Beast and the Ego AIO. (I have the AIO but don't have the Baby Beast) If you are not coughing on the AIO then you are probably not used to the subohm cloud style but more comfortable with the lower watt mouth-to-lung style.

    Hello! Welcome to the forums!

High nicotine verses low nicotine. When you vape at higher wattage with those sub ohm tanks, your consumption of e juice is higher than when your using a little ego with low wattage.. this is why when you sub ohm you need much less nicotine than when you vape at lower wattage.. for instance, I'm a low wattage vaper and so is my husband, I use about 5 to 6 ml of ejuice a day, so I can feasibly use a higher nicotine level than someone who is burning through upwards of 15 - 20 ml a day, so look to your level of consumption as to how much nicotine you need. Sub ohm vaping burns through the juice for real..

My husband is just quitting smoking as well, he is not having the cough, as I was very careful to get him a set up and a e juice that was not irritating to his throat and lungs, and it is quite possible that you can get something that won't make you cough..

Fyi, To this day, I cannot sub ohm.. it makes me cough up a storm as it feels like a tank hitting my lungs.. lol.. I have been vaping about three years now and for me that's just never gone away, I'm definitely a lower wattage vaper... however, if you are determined, you can simply use it until your used to it.. it depends on if you like the vape overall, we are all different.

As far as nicotine level, use how much your body says you need. You will know when it's just too much.

You WILL chain vape.. and that's okay.. your puff count is the equivalent (puff for puff) of smoking a pack to a pack and a half a day.. and thats fine.. I chain vaped up a storm until I was over the withdrawal phase of the switch.. it doesn't take too long for real, a month or two usually, although some people simply always chain vape, but it doesn't sound like your over doing it at all..

See for me subohm vaping is perfect for small MTL puffs. I like taking a small puff like I would off a cigarette but still feeling it and getting plenty of vapor. That way it feels very close to the experience I got from smoking. That was my biggest complaint in the early days, I had to take huge inhales to produce the same feeling subohm atomizers give me with an effortless cigarette-like inhale. The first time I tried subohm I knew I found what I was looking for all along. Different strokes for different folks kinda thing. With subohm I finally got the kick I was looking for without having to take a ridiculously long power puff.

    Same here Mad.
I started with 24mg and after I switched long time ago to subohm I never decreased nic. Works for me, and that's what it's all about, no?

(btw, I've had people tell me I'm crazy for using 24mg in subohm, but hey, it kept me off cigs for 4 years now, and that's after a 45 year 2 1/2 PAD run!

And I think this is just a matter of all being different people.. and we all smoked a bit different too.

For me the kayfun 4 or the kabuki recreate smoking nearly perfectly vaping at low wattage. For you, it's different. For my son, it's vaping at 60 watts with a wismec reaux tank. (Although I don't know if it recreates smoking for him.. but he does like it.. )

This is why we all need some measure of trial and error - to find that happy place for each of us because the point of the whole exercise is to keep us off cigarettes...

I do love the fact that right now, we have so many choices out there, as there is literally something for everyone on the market.

I started off vaping 24mg sub ohm & gradually I've come down to 6mg but I have found I might have to increase it again cos I started smoking again last August :(

8 days? good for you, bad for your withdrawal/clean-up phase.

Many experience a couple of bad weeks, while you system is flushing all the toxins out, the walls of your breathing airways and lungs are clearing up the tar and crap, regrowing a new layer of cells and "hairs" that will be very sensitive as after 15 years, they are like newborn babies here. You can expect a few side effect caused by your system purging the toxins out, as it's far from being just the nicotine that your system was addicted to, it will "crave" or go crazy for a bit as it's so used to living with those toxins present.

Note that the Beast tanks aren't really "newbies" tank and more about cloud chasing, so lots of vapor, but maybe not what would work best for you. You could check out other tanks and maybe later on get back to the Baby Beast.

try different juices and wattages (recommended watts are on the coils, but i vape lower than this most of the time ) i usually cough at first ,especially with a new coil or fully charged battery ,but it passes throughout the day and i usually increase the wattage as the day goes on ..i wouldn't recommend using above 6ml nic when vaping on the sub ohm coils ..

Welcome and glad you joined. As a rule, MTL vapers do not need as much vaper as DL vapers. Can you get accustom to too much vaper, yes but why? Might want to try non sub ohm (or highest sub coils) coils if offered.
In General lower ohm coils/higher wattage vaping will:
    Heat The Coil Faster
Produce More Vapor, can mute taste (coat mouth/build up)
    Drain The Battery Faster
    Use E-Juice Faster
    Produce A Warmer Tasting Vape
    Shorten Coil Life
    Shorten Wick Life
    More PV Maintenance/Issues
More irritation to non vapers (tends create more negative comments regarding cloud production)

If you are chain vaping because that's how often you smoked but aren't feeling withdrawals, stick with the low nic. I started on 28mg about 9 years ago before sub ohm was a thing (or mods really) but have since gone down to 3-6mg. The device really matters too, the faster your juice bottle empties the lower you probably need your nicotine level, but this is still dependant on the person.

Coughing could be from the subohm experience, reaction to PG, or just purging the toxins from smoking. One thing I've seen here a lot that isn't quite true is the need to "move up". If you vape on a 1.2ohm coil from a cig-a-like pen and aren't smoking or having cravings why change? You don't need to be running a cloud machine to be vaping, I still enjoy old school high ohm stuff as much as I do sub ohm cloud chasing.
