It is possible. You can blow your coil or if you have wicks on - you can burn them. If the coil pops - get a new one and if you burn the wicks - the head needs to be replaced because it will just taste burnt.

You only pulse a few seconds at a time until you see your coil glow red and icky stuff stop burning off.

When coil burns the juice, gunk builds up on the coil. You can't remove them by washing as they are stuck to the coil. Sort of like stuff that builds up on frying pan when you cook greasy stuff. If these gunk builds up, your coil wouldn't be able to fire effectively and worse, it will taste burned. By dry burning, you are "burning" off these gunk. Similar to heating up your frying pan to clean it.
You can dry bun with silica since it doesn't burn until it gets really hot. But you can't dry burn with cotton. Be sure to blow on it while dry burning to help the gunk detach from the coil. Rinse after the dry burn is optional to wash off the gunk from the atty.

If done right, your coil will burn like brand new and you will get very long life out of it.

I've found that dry burning is most effective if done early in the coil's life and regularly, before too much gunk is built up. This allows you to burn it off with just a few sets of pulses, versus having to pulse the coil a large number of times. When the coil needs extended pulses, the wick (silica) seems to dry out and fibers start breaking around the coil, and the chance of scorching the rubber grommet in clearos increases.

I recommend washing the coil off after dry burning as critical to get the best taste.
