Hi All,

First let me introduce myself to this good community.

I am near 52 and smoked for too long. A short time ago an impulse purchase for hardly great starter CE4 type stuff at too much cost, IMHO now, may just be the best mistake I ever made. In all honesty a few beers and disgusted with myself for going through a whole pack of cigs I thought to try e cigs. That was 6 weeks ago, and now it's next step having not smoked for those six weeks. Incredibly I am not even missing cigs :)

OK I am looking at a Wismec Presa TC 75W Mod for my power source. I am intending to team this with an Aspire Nautilus tank and their 1.8ohm coils for my daytime set up. As a happily very ex smoker that mouth to lung suits me well enough. For an evening now and the why not option I am considering the Smok TFV4 mini tank (sub ohm). I realise I could run into the odd in between ideal charge, but I still have some CE4s / 650mah batts (basic starting set up) to get me out of a hole. Incidentally I found that basic starting set up just about OK, but kind of bored with it.

The TFV4 mini comes with a rebuildable and in short time I will have a go there, but will stick with their .2 ohm triple coils just for now. I think I am going to be reasonably competent building my own coils at least as far as safety goes (across ohms law / have an ohm meter etc...).

Basically am I in the zone or have I missed something huge? Coil building wise I was thinking of about .9 to 1.1 ohm (Kanthal) for that smok TFV4 mini as a sensible start point - again am I in the zone or missing the entire playing field / whatever ? Any recommended builds ? Nautilus tank wise in all honesty I want to let my laziness happen, and probably just stick to buying the replacements .

One last question though. I see people make a huge fuss about needing to burn off the coating from coils they build, but are pre made coils given this benefit? Does it really matter? I guess burning off has it's issues, but maybe a fan and care negates any potential danger there I guess..........

Having basically landed from Mars 6 weeks ago as far as all this stuff goes I have tried to do my research to get close, but a little knowledge being dangerous could be me now, LOL. 6 weeks ago I really thought an ecig was an ecig was an ecig having never really looked. Busy I guess, and what has been happening largely passed me by.

Apologies for no live links. I understand I do not have this right for my first 5 posts at least - understandable moderation thing, but just to let all know I would have if I could.

I did look through some threads, but could not see my specific concerns addressed. I could have missed them, but at least I looked.

Thought's please good people.

Hello again and thanks in advance.

Hi Jim and welcome to ECF!

From what you are describing, it looks like you have a pretty good start on things.

You have your CE4 startup items to use for backups, a VERY nice combination with the Presa and the Nautilus, and something to grow with while learning to build coils.

You are also wise enough to not plunge right into the deep end of making super sub ohm coils right away.

Congratulations on the six weeks away from the cigarettes!

As far as burning off the coating on the coils, you only want to do that with coils that have silica wicks - never with wicks made of cotton. Cotton wicks are usually designated as OCC coils. With those, you can swish them around in grain alcohol (never isopropyl), then rinse them and let them dry before using. Most folks don't really go through the bother, though.

Hmm - builds. I've only tried twisted, contact and spaced coils. The twisted coils are OK, but the contact and spaced coils are my preference, depending on the atomizer and juice I'm building for.

Lots of folks like the fancier coils, though, so it's really just a preference. Experiment and see what you like.

Hope it helps and Happy Vaping!

Welcome and glad you joined. Highly recommend that you stay in the 1.5 to 2.0 ohm coil range to start. Any regulated box mod is fine for this power setting.
Sub ohm'g is an entirely different type of advanced vaping and should be approached only when a vaper knows his or her basics.
Coil building is best introduced by You tube. Should be a piece of cake youngster. You may PM me if you get stuck.

thought to try e cigs. That was 6 weeks ago,
Your off to a better start than most vapors, keep reading and asking questions.

Hello again and thanks in advance.

I'm 52 too.

Not even missing cigs: many of us especially older smokers know that feeling.

I think the smok tfv4 is a great option; although for first timers I'd have suggested something more in the 30 watt region to start with.

Have you missed something huge: i don't think so but have a look at the ijoy solo mini.

All my coils are over 1 ohm, most over 2 ohms; I started vaping in 2013 back when 15 watts was alot.

People dryburn gunked up coils and rewick; dryburning doesn't really apply to prefab coils unlesss you are rewicking them.
