you will like the clearomisers they are quick and painless to refill and easy to clean just wash under warm water or if you are going from a heaver flavor to one a tad lighter use vodka/everclear. I usally keep a clearomiser for each main flavor.
Good choice with the twist and clearomizers, I am very happy with mine.
I like having cartomizers for my other non-favorite flavors. It's better to top off cartomizers before they are completely empty. You can get a burned taste if you vape them too dry but it's easy to figure out by doing.
Youtube vid on filling cartomizers.
Happy to hear you are finding what you like! I would suggest getting him one, if he likes the occasional cigar, hitting a ecig is about the same, but like you said you can get him some 0mg stuff so he can just enjoy the taste and the physical desire to hit a cigar.
Good luck and let us know if you need any more help.
i started out with a ego t kit and 2 30 mil bottles , they both lasted me the whole month and some , i still have my ego batteries and the tanks are still usable the cartomizer it came with is still working but over time it seemed not strong enough for me , but it is a good started kit . Gl gettign started on a healthier path

The Ego is an excellent first choice. I would suggest that you buy a starter kit, and try to get passthru batteries in your kit if that option is available to you.
